In this quick video I take a look at what I'll describe as a 'must have' accessory for your Evolution Rage 5-S Table Saw. I purchased this from Stu at 'stuparkercreations' on Etsy (link below). If you do own an Evolution Rage 5-S I would thoroughly recommend purchasing one of these to aid ease of use and more importantly for safety purposes.
If you enjoyed this video then please give it a thumbs up and maybe consider subscribing to the channel. Best wishes, Leo

Great idea Ryan. Someone suggested this for my planer thicknesser as I work around the back of it as I push the wood through with my left arm so I’m the other side of the kill switch if that makes sense. Need to come up with an idea that won’t invalidate my warranty on it 👍
@lochaberryan

@@Hand-i-Craft yep... all of my pedals are plug and play and the dead man switches are in line before the mains socket, therefore will isolate a particular double power outlet that supplies the tool. No warranties invalidated.

Thanks for your efforts there. Its nice to find so many owners agreeing about this design issue. I have owned mine since late last year & I spotted this failing first time out with the saw. At £12 & P/P its a no brainer. Wish you had posted this 24hrs ago because I spent a couple of hours in my garage today making something quite similar. Nice accessory! I think I'll be buying one of them at some point. It's definitely an issue that needs to be overcome and £12+postage isn't too bad. Many times I've experienced the same thing in situations as you demonstrated where I've been switching it off and cringing because I'm yet to get rid of the cut piece to the side of the blade. It could get jiggled into the teeth and become a projectile that goes directly to the face. Someone from the comfort of a sofa or bed will read this and say we should always clear the blade before going in front of the blade but in reality we all do it from time to time.

Yea definitely. As it stands you've really got to get your head down there to look for it whereas with this I bet you could just feel for it and keep your eye on the blade until it's off.

The very first thing I added to my Rage5S, I have my own 3D printer so it was easy to do, another good addition is to fit a soft start makes it much more pleasant to use, have you considered using featherboards to add a little pressure both down and on the side of the workpiece I would be a little concerned regarding kickback due to operating the saw with one hand, the featherboards should decrease the possibility of this

I reckon with a single piece of wood or bar you could connect the handle ends to each other so that it can be moved more easily with one hand by putting pressure in the middle of the machine rather than at one side or the other. I shortened my handles for a reduced footprint when open, but in your situation I'd leave them full length for max leverage with one hand but I'd definitely connect them.
@Hand-i-Craft

Oh yes I recall that now you mention it! Definitely sounds like a plan. Not sure about you but I don't tend to get the saw out that often and tend to use it when I'm doing loads of cuts in one go. I got a couple of bargains recently! New Makita 4350FCT (jigsaw) for £90 and new Makita KP0810K (planer) for £120! Hi Leo, my Evolution 5 S, which is 5 years old now, came with a kill switch attached as standard. I can't understand why they did away with it? However, the one demonstrated seems to be a must have accessory and works really well.

Crazy to think in the design tweaks and midlife upgrade they decide to do away with the most important safety component on the saw, especially considering where the on / off switch is 😳😳🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Great find, Very useful... Just one thing I will be implementing. I'll be fastening it on with screws. I could see the adhesive strip failing at exactly the point where it's needed, when you're in a blind Emergency panic ?

I suppose what you’re saying is possible, but with the correct cleaning and surface preparation I couldn’t see it happening. Would screwing it in invalidate the warranty 🤷‍♂️

Interesting that James as I knew yours was one of the earlier ones and mine didn’t have one at all! Not great to skimp on the safety side when they’ve modified the design slightly. It’s a great find, simple effective design and it’s great to support a guy who’s just a small independent maker as well👍👍

I am getting really bloody confused by all the reviews I watch. I want a table saw for basically the sole purpose of cutting 3.75 inch and 4 inch wide wood into 1 inch pieces to make trellises .These pieces would be 2,4 to 3m before being ripped.Should I get a cheap saw or would people say this one is a good buy for that purpose? Great video by the way.

Apologies I don’t know whether it will or not tbh. What I will say is the mitre slots on the Rage 5-S are certainly ‘non-standard’ so I’d be inclined to say no. If you do find out the answer though please let me know so I can share with others 👍👍

That little fence attached to the big fence should it be used all the time?
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 2 жыл бұрын
I’m no expert in any way pal, but my understanding is this. You are ok with just the main king fence if cutting sheet goods like MDF, Ply, OSB etc because they are pretty square. The smaller fence (fixed to the main fence half way ish along to the blade) should be used for cutting timber as the natural variance in shape could cause the timber to pinch against the fence increasing the risk of kickback. With the smaller fence attached (and the riving knife fitted of course) it gives the timber space after the cut reducing the risk of kick back 👍👍

Hey Leo, I finally broke down and got a tablesaw, and I'm going through your vids for some 1 armed table saw tips . . . But it seems that a left and a right arm might have some fairly distinct differences in technique. So, do you know any full-time righties out there? I could use some technique visuals getting started. Thanks again brother!

Hello Matt, good to hear from you pal and yes I noticed you’ve gone for a table saw. Sorry to hear about the flat bed issues and hope you get it sorted out. In terms of table saw usage for a righty, you might be as well reaching out to James @OneHandedMaker in Australia. He is a fellow one hander and right arm too. Here is a link to his chess board video that you can catch a little bit of his table saw use. Great guy as well 👍. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eX3bn3Zph5aapc0si=f7laB4Up3frqFRw4

Ok got it. I hope. The spring rods on both ends serves as extended wing table lever adjustment. After adjusting, the wing now tighter. And you are right: top is too high! Adjust the 2 screws on the lever and voila. Now happy camper. Thanks Leo.

great vid. Bought one of these off the back of your recommedation. Works a treat. One question on the saw though. How are finding the dust collections now you've used it for a while. I bought a better Vac and it still chucks dust everywhere.
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew, very good addition to the saw. I have to say the dust collection is awful and I have it set up to a decent M class extractor. Table saws in general aren’t great for dust collection unless you spend the big bucks, but this is a big negative of the Rage 5-S

This is my exact biggest issue with the saw to, thank you for this video! As a fellow Rage 5-s owner can I ask, do you ever get blade 'wobble' while cutting? I've had this a few times where pieces have been ruined halfway through a cut, despite everything being tight and set up square too.
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 3 жыл бұрын
Nice one Andy, well worth purchasing and great to support a U.K. independent maker👍👍. Mmmm, the wobble. I’ve never had ‘side to side’ wobble so to speak before, but I have on occasion encountered ‘forwards to backwards’ slight wobble when I’ve been pushing something through but that didn’t affect the quality of the cut🤷‍♂️

Hi Leo Love your honest video's. I along with a lot of your followers noticed this flaw as soon as it arrived. I did see on one other 18 month old vid the chap had a kill switch, when mine arrived i thought they have gone backwards. Yes i too have ordered a kill switch from France. Question. Every time i turn my saw on there is a very loud kerlunk sound.( is that a word?) Is this the lack of a soft start system that causes the saw to "jump hence the sound" My evolution drop saw does not make this sound so i am wondering. Have written to Evolution but as of yet no response. Keep up the GREAT work.
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stepan for your kind comments. Yes mine also makes a kind of kerlunk sound when it fires up, could be because it doesn’t have a slow start feature🤷‍♂️. The kill switch is great for this, much safer to use once installed 👍

Great job evolution...make a safety feature less safe. Replacement looks fab and more importantly functional! Even a good solid big red button (see big Clive's button for his brother ralfy for the sort of thing i mean) would have been better than the manufacturer removing it entirely.

This is weird. I have an older version of this saw (with the slightly less good dust guard) and it already has this kind of on off switch. (eg the version in the image here masseys-diy.co.uk/product/evolution-rage5-multi-purpose-table-saw-255mm/ ) Frustrating that Evolution would make an update that is so obviously a downgrade...
