Andre, I found your site this morning as I was researching EV's and found myself binge watching your videos. You should know that you are doing a great job coming up with interesting content and have a comfortable style on camera presenting the facts. I can imagine that anyone interested in EV's and specifically the Niro will find your content essential. Being an engineer, a car enthusiast and one that appreciates driving dynamics I have been buying German cars for the last 20yrs. When Kia and Hyundai were first introduced to the US I passed them off as a low end appliance. Over the years watching the brand mature, I have noticed them make great improvements. When the Genesis and the Stinger came out I was impressed but wondered if they may be shooting a bit too far beyond their normal buyer. The Niro is no exception, as I do find it a bit expensive for the brand but quality and features are very appealing. I dipped my toe into the EV pool back in 2016 with a 2013 Leaf SV. Used Leaf's are very inexpensive and a 10000 mile, 3yo example went for 35% of its original MSRP. I owned it for a year but found its limited range impractical for my life so I traded it a year later for what I paid for it. Now 4 years later I am considering an EV again. The Mini E, E-Golf, Niro and the PHEV Honda Clarity are all under consideration. The Niro is by far is the most practical and you have given me a lot to think about. Thank you putting together some great content!!
@EV-olution4 жыл бұрын
Wow! Thank you very much, I really appreciate your comment 😃. I try to improve at least one thing in every video and now when I look at older content that I made, I cringe at how bad I perceive it to be. I hope you subscribed so you don’t miss future videos 😊 I understand when you say the Niro EV is expensive, but it really is an incredible electric car, packed full of excellent features and technology, plus you get one of the best fit and finishes from any car manufacturer. You are correct, Kia and Hyundai have come a long way since the 80s and deserve to be looked at for any of their vehicles because of the value for money and the quality they offer. Regarding your choices, something you should know about the Mini E is that is uses fairly old BEV tech from the BMW i3 so I would think twice before buying, but it is a nice car and should be decent. The e-Golf is also older tech, but is proven, has excellent build quality, and drives incredibly well as it is built on the Golf R, great choice. I don’t like to bash any product that has EV tech, but I really don’t like the Honda Clarity for a few reasons: 1) I can’t stand the look, but this is personal taste and if you like it then I cannot judge because each person likes different things. (2) Honda has never been serious about EVs and the Clarity is a compliance car. (3) You are paying quite a bit of money for a car that has limited EV range, all of the disadvantages of an ICE vehicle, and you have more points of failure since it merges BEV and ICE tech making the Clarity, like any hybrid, a more expensive vehicle in the long term because of maintenance. Have you considered the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric? Lots of range, interesting style, lots of room and reasonable price. With that being said you are the one who has to enjoy the car you drive and if the car suits your needs, if you like it, and if it fits your budget, then nobody has anything to say about your choice. Thanks again!

@@EV-olution Excellent comment Andre. I agree, the Honda Clarity is awful to look at and the full EV model has terrible range. I loved the e-golf but sub 150 mile range was a big no no for me. I'd recommend the comment poster take a look at the Niro EV, Model 3, Kona, Bolt, VW ID4 (when it comes out), and Nissan Ariya. I also think that the Ioniq EV and Standard Leaf are options for cheaper EVs with decent range. That being said I think the 200+ mile range EVs make a lot of sense since I think for EVs to truly pay off driving them as much as possible is important. If they have too little range and you will still drive an ICE car a lot it really reduces the purpose of buying an EV. The Niro EV consistently gets around 195-200 miles at 80 percent for me and I'd highly recommend it to the original poster! Keep the great content up Andre, I love it.

Just discovered your channel. Great content! Ordered an e-niro about a month ago. Delivery within the next three weeks or so. Really looking forward to it - I'm like a child on Christmas morning! I considered a number of cars, including the Kona, but for us the extra space in the e-niro was essential as we have a two year old child. And I really did not like the legroom in the back of the Kona! I will say, however, that I prefer the looks of the Kona over the e-niro. For us, getting an ICE was never an option, but living in Norway the choice wasn't as difficult as it is in many other places. Keep up the great work! Best regards from a fellow "frozen wasteland".

Nice comparison. Your findings were similar to mine, though I looked at the US base trim Niro (the only model available around here) vs. the US Ultimate trim on the Kona. As a driver, I would have preferred the Hyundai, but back seat comfort for adults was a major factor in my choosing the Niro. I especially liked the small heads-up display on the Kona Ultimate - although both the Niro and Kona have great gauge displays, it is so intuitive to have the most important info always in your peripheral vision. That feature should be made standard across Hyundai and KIA lines, IMO (actually, I wonder why all vehicles do not have this by now). It is a little thing in cost and complexity that really adds to driving comfort.
@liwang48655 жыл бұрын
Nice comparison. I just got the Niro for 2 weeks and I love it. One difference between Canada and US I want to mention is the Adaptive Cruise Control. In Canada, Kona gets the ACC in base trim and the guy rates it to be the best feature. However, in the US the ACC is only on Top trim. Compared to Niro, ACC is standard in both trims. If people live in an area that has heavy traffic (I live in Los Angeles), acc is the function worth the money.
@EV-olution5 жыл бұрын
I agree. I love ACC and would not want to live without it. FYI, in Canada the Niro EV EX (base trim) does not have this feature. I am working on a comparison video for the Niro EV EX vs SX, but I just found out that my mic input was broken when my camera fell, right at the beginning of filming it... I am trying to see if I can salvage the video 😟
@kaasmeester59035 жыл бұрын
@@EV-olution Weird how the trim levels vary so much per country. Even here in Europe it seems different in every country... Hey Andre. Thanks for the shout-out! I'm surprised your guest preferred the Kona to the Niro being he is a tall guy. I'm a big and tall guy and when I sat in a Kona, I refused to take it for a drive and left the dealership immediately because it was so confining, I felt like I was in a coffin. One of my tests was to grab the steering wheel and swing my elbows outward. On the Niro, I seemed to have freedom on all sides. They seem to make the doors very thin somehow. I had a similar feeling with swinging my knees outward. The Niro (Hybrid) had a lot of swing room, and the EV with the cutout was even better. The Kona just didn't have this freedom. The Niro has a feeling that reminds me of a pickup truck, but the Kona seemed like a compact car. I would be surprised to hear his comments after he sits in your car and adjusts the seat a little bit. :)
@EV-olution5 жыл бұрын
I was also a bit surprised, but he seems to like it. I think it was also a question of the Niro EV EX not having all of the basic features like heated seats, radar, safety features, etc. and considering the Soul Premium is only a 39kWh battery it does not have the range he needs so the Kona Electric was his choice.
@be2365 жыл бұрын
@@EV-olution You should have had that tall guy sit in his Kona Electric in the front seat (adjusted to his comfortable position), then sit in the back seat, showing us his knee space. Then do the same with Niro EV and we can see what the difference is...

@@EV-olution Yeah, I figured that, just wanted it to be shown so people can see the difference... I've sat in Kona Electric once and my knees almost touched the driver's seat, whereas in Niro EV, I had about 8cm knee clearance ... both those tests were with the driver's seat in my normal driving position... what confuses me a bit is that TeslaBjorn in Norway KZbin showed Niro EV having a larger boot space than Kona Electric in Europe or Korean market, but looking at the "specs" for North America, it showed Kona Electric having slightly larger boot space than Niro EV... Go figure... I was at dealership and looked at both and they seemed about the same size.. so not sure why that is my impression in-person, whereas TeslaBjorn measured their boot space and it showed Niro EV much larger.. so. I dont know what to make of that..

Thank you for the videos and your effort to present them - Is there a real world difference in the driving range of the Kona versus the Niro? It appeared that driving range was a key factor in Frank's decision to purchase the Kona.
@EV-olution5 жыл бұрын
The Niro EV is rated at 385km, but so far I have always had over 400km of range on a charge. The Kona Electric has a slightly higher range, about 20 or 30 km. It also depends on how you drive the car, the outside temperature and your environment (hills vs flat), but both are very close for range.

They are all about the same price within a couple thousand dollars, each offering something different, but all offering similar range on one charge.
@EV-olution5 жыл бұрын
One note, I did not mention the Nissan Leaf+ because it lacks thermal management of the battery. This will be the subject of a future video, but essentially it is an issue when it is really cold, but more importantly, when it is really hot. This leads to slow charging speeds and premature battery degradation.
@stephenshannon37065 жыл бұрын
EV-olution the slow charging is a defensive reaction to avoid serious battery degradation. I have owned several different EVs, but have only seen actual temperatures on the Leaf, using Leaf Spy. I am unaware of the temps on my e-Niro but I can tell you it can charge just as slowly when the battery is cold.. in principle having liquid thermal management should be advantageous, but in reality I don't think this is proven in the field. Tesla Bjorn has done some good you-tube videos on the e-Nero cold charging matter.
@EV-olution5 жыл бұрын
The liquid thermal management, including the battery heater for winter, will have a significant impact on speed of charging, as well as battery protection when talking about heat. The fact that Nissan Leafs do not have any active cooling in hot environments is proven to cause very slow charging speeds, slower than other vehicles with thermal management, and many Leafs have premature battery degradation. You can find many reports (official and unofficial) about this issue. The enemy of any Lithium Ion battery is heat. Cold has an impact on reducing charging speeds as well as power output but is less of an issue than heat. Here is just one of many articles explaining the issue: cleantechnica.com/2018/07/16/2018-leaf-vs-long-journeys-can-it-take-the-heat/

Ça me fait plasir 🙂 The Niro EX would have been interesting if Kia had not removed the battery heater and the basics like heated seats and steering. Regarding anything that I don't like about my Niro EV... Like any car it is not perfect, I would have liked more cushion in the seats to make them softer, but nobody makes soft seats anymore and the Niro seats are very comfortable compared to many cars. I would have preferred it if it was rear wheel drive like the Tesla Model 3 SR+, but it is not a problem for normal driving, only when you step on it from a dead stop, especially in Sport mode. Also, if you like buttons then you are going to love the Niro EV, Kia has put a button for everything, the exact opposite of a Model 3; I got used to it. So essentially these things are not really issues, more nit-picking details. I love my car after almost 24,000km and 1 year and would not swap it for any current EV on the market because the Niro EV is exactly what I need for my use. I hope this helps.

I always just view the Kona as the more "sporty" car, and the Niro is more mature and refined. Kona is a bit lighter, a bit faster, higher ground clearance. Niro has more space, has a rated towing capacity, it's a bit slower, a bit lower range. With that said, the Kona is definitely cheaper as of now, the Niros in my area are now being priced more expensive than the Tesla Model Y SR, I would have a hard time justifying a FWD smaller crossover, over a bigger RWD one. Kia has to whip their dealerships back into line, if they want to sell the Niro in volume.

I agree with you regarding the types of vehicles the Kona and Niro are, I have the same impression. As for the dealers in your area, that is ridiculous! The Niro EV top trim is a bit more expensive that the Model 3 SR+, but to be more expensive than the Model Y is insane!

Thanks for watching and I am glad you like them. 🙂 Some Niro EV and Kona Electric owners have experienced a noise similar to a hockey card in bicycle spokes. Considering the combined number of these two vehicles sold I am fairly confident that the percentage is low, but it is a possible issue. The problem is related to the electric motor and both companies replace the original 710 motor, under warranty, with a version 711. The posts I have read from those who had it done are happy and the problem is solved. Since they are still a fairly new cars we need more time to know if this is a permanent fix or not. With that being said, most owners are very happy and don't have any issues. I have 24,000km, have no problems, and I have one of the first to arrive in Canada. I still consider these cars to be among the most reliable and the Niro EV is amazing in terms of fit, finish, value, and dealer service availability. I strongly recommend it.

Sun /moon roof is one option (not an option for my Niro) I could have down without. I have lots of headroom as i'm 5" 11" (180.34 cm for Robert Evans ) but KIA could have dropped the List price. I always worry about opening it and somehow it gets stuck open. I like the Tuxmats one less thing to worry about for winter. What are you doing for winter tires this fall? (Video?) I'm trying to "recycle" my 16" Blizzak snows to the Niro from my Camry Hybrid - Same width and circumferance as the 17" Michelin all season. The steel rims from the Toyota won't fit over the brake calipers. Ordered new steel rims and hope they fit. I showed at the Drive Week at Cambridge Ontario event so of course I was parked next to a very nice Kona too.

Thank you very much! Yes, this was time consuming, but fun to do and I am happy I can help others to make a choice that suits their needs. Regarding winter tires, I have ordered Nokian R3 tires that I will put on the original alloy wheels and have ordered some EV specific allow wheels for summer. I will have a video about this soon (I hope), I am just waiting on the arrival of the new wheels. Thanks again.

Salut André! As-tu expérimenté le bruit de carte avec le Niro?
@EV-olution4 жыл бұрын
Bonjour, non, pas de bruit de carte avec ma voiture et j'ai 32,000km.
@danicklaliberte5724 жыл бұрын
@@EV-olution ok! Chanceux.
@EV-olution4 жыл бұрын

Since in my area, I can only get Kia Niro EV, but besides the boot space and back seat being larger in Niro EV, I do prefer the center display higher up in Kona Electric, as you dont have to look down on it in Niro EV when you're driving...
@EV-olution5 жыл бұрын
That is interesting because I am the opposite, I prefer the screen to be integrated so as to not take up room from visibility out of the car.
@be2365 жыл бұрын
@@EV-olution hmm. I think you can stI'll look over past the higher kona screen to see outside

@@be236 Yes, you can see over it, I just prefer not having the screen higher up.

That's the problem with being new to making videos... you don't think of these things until it's too late. Great idea, I wish I had thought of it.

So Niro doesn't has Heat pump for battery right?
@EV-olution4 жыл бұрын
The heat pump is actually used by the AC and heating system (HVAC) in order to use less electricity. Then there is the battery heater that heats up the battery in the winter. Both are separate from each other and not related. In Canada the top trim SX Touring has both, but the entry level EX does not. The Kona on the otherhand gets both in both trims. In the US the EX and EX Premium get the heat pump, but the battery heater is dependent on the state the car is delivered to.

What are these weird measurements you use? Inches?? Are you aware that you are in Canada and we use metric like the rest of the world?
@EV-olution5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but unfortunately the measuring tape I had was only in inches and I am not a human conversion calculator 😉. I could have converted and added text afterwards during editing, but I forgot to because I was in a rush to publish today since I am really late getting a video out. Next time I will bring the correct tape measure I promise 🙂.

@@jdavison8551 Inches are not the official measurement in the UK. You are just one of the few who cannot adjust to a proper standard.

Robert Evans official or not, both systems are used by a large proportion of the population with few problems. Inches remain in common usage. It’s a fact provided to you free and gratis. Feel free to disregard if you prefer.
