I really enjoy, and most of all appreciate, the transparency behind this organization. I was honestly very skeptical after having first found this channel and looking at the website, but being able to come to the videos on this channel and see actual student in the program leaving comments is so comforting. I will definitely be enrolling soon. Just what I am looking for, awesome job everyone at Evolve.

I saw MIthrilda's videos and I was sold. Exactly what I am looking for. Waiting for my first box! :) Very exited. I tried to learn via KZbin painter videos, bought everything, it was stinky, I had to keep my room well ventilated, and it was just wrong wrong wrong. Now I know I can paint w/o all those chemicals, and I am looking forward to all he structure and feedback. I plan on putting in 100% and doing so well, that I already plan on enrolling the advanced class when it's time text year (or earlier)

I’m almost through block 2, and I’ve been worried about running out of paint through most of it :D Now that I’m almost finished, I realise that I didn’t need to worry, at all. It’s very helpful to know exactly how much paint there is in the boxes, since a beginner can’t look at a tube and guess. So this video is super useful :D

Great video, Daniel! I liked hearing the reasoning behind the different supplies and how they all fit together. The arrival of all the needed supplies in one box was a *significant* factor in my decision to enroll in Evolve -- I had been attempting to research supplies on my own and was overwhelmed at all the choices out there and the need to know how the choices would work together, and as you mentioned, the cost of shipping, taxes, etc.. I'm in Block 3 and my Blocks 1 & 2 greyscale tubes are still 3/4 full -- I love how far the Old Holland paint stretches. My paintbrushes are all still in great shape, too! Basically everything in the two boxes has been useful and high quality -- I am so pleased with all of it! My favorite tool, unexpectedly, is the palette knife. :) I like it sooooo much better than the ones I had been using from a local hobby store. The palette knife is long and skinny and flexible -- the long metal has a bit of spring to it that makes it much easier to use than the bulky hobby ones. Is it from Old Holland? I definitely want to buy several more in case this one ever breaks. Thanks again! -shawnee

@@evolveartist Wow, thank you for taking the time to find a similar-looking one, Daniel! I appreciate that so much! I had searched for one but hadn't found one that has that flat bar all the way across the metal part of the handle. I think the flatness is part of what gives this palette knife its springy nature--the rounded handles in other palette knives seem to be what creates the rigidity, as far as I can tell. But maybe the rigidity is a preference for other artists? At any rate, if there is an Evolve Santa Clause out there, and I make this year's "Nice" list, my Christmas wish is for more Evolve palette knives.

Hi, Daniel! I would like to thank you for explaining the paint supplies and going over what we will be needing. Yes, the photos and sketches will be super beneficial. First question: Is there a link on easels you recommend? If so where do we find the links? Second Question: Dove soap was recommended previously. I was just wondering if the Dove soap is liquid or a bar? As well as if we can use the new coconut Dove bar? Third Question: I have heard of other Artists using various types of oils online. The other day I heard one artist used walnut oil. Even though it seems neat to experiment with various oils possibly later on in the near future after our Evolve Artists training as they are not recommended for our training. I do know that we are most likely strictly using only Linseed oil with all block lessons. Because, we are only using what supplies that were shipped to us. I just bought a carryon easel, the deluxe French one. I hope I made a good choice. ETA🌹
@evolveartist
@evolveartist Жыл бұрын
Hey Elaine, great questions! 1) We have a link to easels we recommend inside our student portal. As long as you have a sturdy easel you won't have any problems. The one that you purchased will work just fine! Will you be trying out some plein air paintings with it? 2) Bar is best. I don't know about the coconut bar. We recommend a bar of just ivory soap - it doesn't have to be made by Dove. 3) Yes there are a variety of oils that people use in oil painting. We use just linseed oil in the Foundation Program. You can definitely experiment on your own with non-Evolve paintings but for Evolve paintings we ask that you only use the materials and process we provide you. I appreciate your curious and experimental mindset, and I do want to encourage that. But please keep those experiments separate from your journey in the Evolve program for the best results. We wouldn't want you to jeopardize your education with us with a few experiments of your own. We've already charted out the path for you, and in each painting we have specific things we want you to focus on to develop your skills (rather than focusing on an experiment with material). Let us be the teacher and show you the way. We are constantly getting artists to pro level skills - you can trust us in our direction! The students that struggle in our program are the ones who try to carve their own path. I can tell you from personal experience that I was constantly ADDING things and trying new things when Kevin was teaching me, and it took me WAY longer to learn how to paint as a result. I could have learned more quickly by simply following the instructions, getting the skills, and then experiment after. Evolve's instructions are so simple and straightforward. Just follow them patiently and you'll be rewarded with awesome painting skills 🙂 but again, as a fellow curious cat I appreciate your desire for learning! Looking forward to seeing your journey unfold in Evolve! ~ Daniel

Are water soluble oil paints an option? I believe they can be used the same as traditional oils but without the challenges of solvents. The course sounds like what I am looking for, but I don't have a well vented studio.
@evolveartist
@evolveartist Жыл бұрын
In the Evolve Program you wouldn't be using any solvents or harmful materials. The oil paint is safe to use and our students use linseed oil (a natural oil and not harmful) to thin the paint and a soap to clean their brushes. All the materials you would use in the Evolve Program are safe to use, so you don't have to worry about having any extra ventilation (no more than what you would normally need for a livable space). So while water soluble oil paints are not an option for the Foundation Program (since all of our teaching and feedback is based on oil paint), you should be able to go through the Foundation Program without any concerns. One thing to note is that in the Advanced Program (Blocks 5 - 8), we do send a bottle of alkyd medium, which is a toxic material. However we only use it in very small amounts. But again the entirely of the Foundation Program (Blocks 1 - 4) is toxic-free. Hope that helps! 😊 ~ Daniel

i noticed that the brushes in the set for block 1 and 2 are very similar in size, but there are a lot of brushes. What is the Idea behind this? I have seen it before that brushes with more different sizes are bought, and one size is left out, but in the case of sizes that are often used, some are duplicated so that the brush does not have to be washed in between when changing colour. I myself am between beginner and advanced and only paint with oil colours from time to time as i also paint with other materials from time to time.

Great question! Our students can use one brush for their light and another brush of the same size for their shadow to help avoid contamination and paint more quickly. But mostly, we give them that many brushes because we make a lot of paintings in the program (around 60 for the Foundation Program, around 80 for the Advanced Program), and we want to make sure our students have more than they need! Thanks for asking! ~ Daniel

Great supplies! Really top drawer! Question: if you learn with synthetic brushes, how will you be able to understand the different natural bristle brushes? How they hold/move paint? How they effect edges?
@evolveartist
@evolveartist 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Amy, good question! In Evolve we've cut a clear, short path to getting pro art skills. Learning how to use natural bristle brushes is a handy skill to have, but it can be easily learned after gaining a more fundamental understanding of painting in general. For example, using a bristle brush is essentially meaningless if you don't already know what shade of paint to use, or where. But once you know what to do, and how to create an intended effect (like the impression of form or depth), then expanding your versatility into knowing when to use a bristle brush vs a sable (for example) becomes a valuable thing. So, all that being said, our students only use synthetic brushes in the Evolve program. You'll find that learning how to use natural bristle brushes is much easier after already gaining a fundamental education in painting that yields highly realistic results. I hope that helps answer your question! Let me know if I can clarify anything for you 🙂 ~ Daniel

Thanks Daniel! I'm watching your videos (some a 2ndx+). The basics of brush handling will definitely be applicable to natural bristle brushes, especially after the fundamentals are accomplished.

Please break down the cost: Block 1-5 is $2500 one time or payments and the price for Blocks 5-8 and what is included in this package? Please recommend a less pricy brand of materials than Old Holland, for future use. Thanks
@evolveartist
@evolveartist Жыл бұрын
Blocks 1-4 can be paid in two ways: $2500 up front or payments of $250/month for 12 months (payments stop after the 12th month). Blocks 5-8 are only available and optional for students who’ve completed Blocks 1-4. The price would be the same as what you paid for Blocks 1-4. This means that if you paid $2500 for Blocks 1-4, and if the price of the Evolve program (Blocks 1-4) increased while you were going through it, let’s say to $4,000, you could join the advanced program (Blocks 5-8) for $2500 rather than pay the $4,000. I haven’t made a video unpacking the Bock 5-8 boxes yet but you get two 12”x16” boxes (the boxes I unpack in this video are 9”x12”) and they come with two more sets of Old Holland color paint - one in opaque (same as in this video) and the other a set of transparent paint for glazing. There’s also more Evolve brushes and additional kinds of brushes as well. And 12x16” canvases for larger, more sophisticated paintings. As for Old Holland, the quality of their paint is unparalleled. I need to make another video on this topic too, because many people think students should use “student-grade” paint. But “student-grade” paint is a fancy way of marketing cheap quality paint with lots of fillers that is detrimental for learning. If you’re serious about improving your skills effectively and quickly, you’ll save more money and time in the long run by using quality materials that won’t encourage bad habits, won’t misrepresent your technical skill level, and will give you an enjoyable learning experience. Also, Old Holland’s paint density allows the paint to carry further than other brands full of filler. And so, while Old Holland is known to be more expensive, it’s actually quite cost effective when you have a clear, proven process to go with it (which is also critical to your growth). That all being said Old Holland isn’t the only way, but we make the argument that it’s the best way, especially when paired with training like ours. I imagine I’d need a couple videos to fully explain my points here but even so, I hope this information was helpful! Let me know if I can help with anything else 😊 ~ Daniel

Hey Paul, sorry for the delay. No worries about not being able to draw in proportion at the start of this course. We start you off with making paintings via transfer paper to help you see more important things like value and edge. Then we slowly ease you into proportional drawing through a very technical and (honestly rigid but sturdy) process. So there’s nothing to fear. who is us? Are you a partner in this initiative? didn't get it. I was redirected from an ad link to this video and I saw you saying you were a student of this method and now I feel you are like a partner of that.

Do you need a drawing board for painting? Because I clearly saw you working on a drawing board.
@evolveartist
@evolveartist 2 жыл бұрын
When working on canvas sheets, you do need some kind of wood panel or board to tape the canvas to. In this video I was using the back of a gessoed hardboard. But we recommend that our students use something sturdier, like a 3/4” wood panel from your local hardware store 🙂 I hope that helps ~ Daniel

If you live in the US- a 1% foreign transaction fee is charged for every evolve artist transaction. So if you pay with a debit card, get ready to pay an additional 1% if you live in the US…

Hi Shae, I'm sorry to hear about this experience you've had with Evolve Artist and that I didn't see this comment until now, though I'm glad to hear that our customer support team resolved this issue for you. At times, shipping carriers have delayed tracking updates or issues with shipping. When this happens, our policy is to wait a certain amount of time, to verify a box is truly lost in transit, before sending a second box, due to the high value and high quality of the painting supplies inside our boxes. In your case, we sent you out another box before this time was up, and you ended up receiving both boxes. We then paid for return shipping for one of the boxes, thus solving the issue for you. We thank you for your patience with the shipping carriers during the busy holiday season. Regarding the foreign transaction fee, we are a Canadian business, so some student’s banks do charge an international fee. You may simply phone your bank and ask to have the fees removed since everything is in USD. 9 times out of 10, your bank will reverse the fees. To clarify, this is not a charge from Evolve Artist. If you have any further questions or concerns we are more than happy to assist you! Please let us know if there’s anything more we can do to help through our customer support email 🙂 Have a great day! ~ Daniel

.... unless "I-am-mistaken", the course does "Not state/Specify" exactly what you pay for the multiple levels offered. Please forgive, however, I would appreciate the cost of what I'm paying for. (?).

Hey Bill! Here are the current prices (as of Feb 2023): The cost of the Evolve Artist Foundation program (Blocks 1-4) is a one-time payment of $2500, or 12 monthly payments of $249/month. With the payment plan, you can start as soon as you make your first payment! As well, you can move through the program at your own pace. Our program includes the following: - All materials (think paint, canvas, brushes) + free shipping worldwide - Instruction by highly-experienced professional painters - Comprehensive and proven curriculum from beginner to professional level oil painting skills - One-on-one mentorship with an instructor (to make sure you're developing good habits all the way through!) - Feedback on every single homework assignment - Weekly video calls - Exclusive community for Evolve Students, including a Facebook Study Group and Homework Rooms - LIFETIME ACCESS to the program as soon as you made a complete payment We offer another, Advanced Program, but this is available only to students who finish the Foundation Program. It's optional, and comes with even more supplies than the first. But it's the same price as the Foundation Program. Hope that helps Bill! Let me know if you have any questions or reach out to us directly at start@evolveartist.com 😊 ~ Daniel

Hey John, I can see where you're coming from if you're used to one-off online courses or if you're trying to learn off of KZbin (and you're not the only one to ring this bell!). But whenever you compare PRICE you must also compare VALUE. Evolve's value is more similar to that of an atelier or university than a workshop class or helpful KZbin videos. We get artists to pro level art skills in 12 months part time or 3 months full-time. (Ateliers and universities do that in 3 or 4 years, minimum, while KZbin promises nothing). We give constructive feedback on every single painting assignment. We have clear assignments and processes at every stage of the journey where we personally monitor your progress. Weekly live classes. One-on-one meetings with coaches. Your one-stop-shop to pro art skills, everything provided for at one price. Is it silly expensive compared to KZbin? Sure. Is it ridiculously cheap compared to other comprehensive and complete art educations? You bet it is. But even more valuable is the time you save. What is your time worth? Do you want to spend years of your life trying to self-direct your own growth, with the potential risk of never getting any closer than you were in previous years? How much money equates to 1 year of your life? If you KNEW that Evolve could save you AT LEAST 1 year of learning, how much would you be willing to pay?... knowing that after one year of consistent, part-time study, you could be making the paintings you always dreamed of making? Make no mistake we are looking for people who are serious about developing their skills so that they are fully equipped to make art without limitations. Do you want to make incredible art? If yes, the next question is simply, can you afford to commit roughly 7 hours / week and a fraction of University tuition to essentially guarantee the skills to make the incredible art you want to make, in 1 year's time? We are aware that, sadly, not everyone can afford this. We keep our profit margins slim to make our program as accessible as possible, but we also need to take care of our dedicated team that delivers feedback, meets with you one-to-one, leads weekly live classes, and commits to your success every day. But if this is something you can afford financially, it's an incredible opportunity to finally unleash your originality and creativity onto canvas with confidence. The true cost of "free" KZbin is that it takes away your time, your most precious commodity. I don't know about you, but I CAN'T afford to waste years of my life stuck going in circles and never making any real progress towards my dreams. If you have more questions about how it is that KZbin and most online-workshops take away your time and fail to deliver a complete education, let me know and I'd be happy to provide a host of reasons. Whether you join Evolve or not John, I really hope that these thoughts help you to consider the value vs cost of an education that you can trust in. If you were let down by a formal education in the past, I feel your pain. Evolve was partly birthed out of our frustration towards art education as a whole and we're really passionate about raising up a new wave of artists who get real results and really leave a mark in history. Let me know if you have any questions. Warmly 🙂 ~ Daniel

Again it’s not ok earning money by teaching others to do Art or think you need to do perfect art . Teach your self it’s better and you’ll become a master your own way but it would be nice if you all do art reviews. I am looking for opinions what to bring in the plane to Canada Ontario / Canada Quebec/Canada londan and Canada nouvelle where my relatives live . I want to bring oils but not sure it’s safe in the plane . Not all paints are like sennelier that’s ap and there is a brand I want you to review and see if it’s ok to bring in the plane too . There is a brand that I won’t find in Canada that’s natural earth paints and they sell kits to make your own paints that had no chemical and it’s vigan even gesso making kit . It’s expensive too and nobody reviews it’s . I always wanted to make my own paints because people like van Gogh . Not sure I can bring those on the plains . What do you suggest 0:04

I'm afraid I can't speak on behalf of paint brands I'm not well -versed in. However the oil paints that I am familiar with have been shipped overseas via airplane with no concerns. On your note that it's not okay to earn money teaching others to do art... this channel, full of free, educational content wouldn't exist if I hadn't been paid by Evolve for my time to make these videos for everyone. The money I earn isn't the reason / motivation for why I do this, but the money makes it possible for me to do this sustainably, and consistently. Speaking personally here, I view art the same way. I don't make art or accept commissions for the primary purpose of earning money. I make art because have a deep desire to reveal the beauty of the world around us, and to share it with others. But I also have a deep desire to help people. So teaching art combines those two passions of mine. The money ensures that I can fulfill those passions without having to worry about shelter, food, and other necessities. And the money also has a way of confirming that what I provide to people has value. And I rest easy knowing that everyone on our team in Evolve feels similarly about doing something that has real value for people. I'm taking the time to explain all this because honestly, I've struggled to reconcile money and passion myself. A book that really helped me is called "The Go-Giver." I highly recommend it - it's a short book with a few powerful ideas: thegogiver.com/ ~ Daniel
