This exercise strengthens and achieves better balance in circles for both the horse and rider 😉.
Work on good riding form first at a walk. Once mastered at a walk, try a collected trot or jog. Keep in mind that slow work is better than being out of control with a high head and a dropped hallow back.
Achieving good riding form at a walk First.
Getting your horse to relax in a tempo/cadence in the walk. Head at wither or below wither level. Making sure they are NOT BEHIND the verticals (chin to chest causes tight jaws).
How do you know your horse is relaxed?
Head low, you can ride with loose reins without them speeding up, licking/relaxed jaw, ears flopped to sides or on you.
You are focusing on your horse’s hindquarters, paying attention to how far those hind legs reach in stride under their belly.
Paying attention to the speed (going at your speed not theirs).
Bill gives mindset tips on riding a circle (outside a round pen). He doesn’t give so much information at once that it overwhelms the rider. Just enough info to quickly accomplish the task with good form. Each riding session with Bill progresses as the rider gains a better set of riding skills. Building on previous lessons under Bill. Progressive riding lessons. Most riders think they have achieved the “goal” and quit taking lessons not understanding that there is soooo much more to “GET” and learn. It’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Discussions afterwards helps the rider
have a deeper understanding of the lesson.
After 5 riding lessons most riders get it and progress faster from there on.
Those riders that understand the progression and stick with it progressing to a higher levels become World Champions under Bill.
