This ted talk was surprisingly sweet. I had no idea bugs could be so bonded. They are little souls that need our protection.

She's explaining possible worldwide starvation and an ecological catastrophe, and she has to bring cuteness into the equation, in order to (hopefully) make a dent in our short attention spans. And then most of the comments here are from people trying to be funny. The indifference is astonishing.

Lol right? The goal of her talk was really meaningful. I guess this is still the comment section, but it seems like this type of thing goes over most people's heads. It's disheartening.

This is actually a really ingenious talk! She presents the problem (ecological collapse), identifies a cause (we don't like bugs), and provides a solution (a touching view on bugs, so that we appreciate them more). It's sad that these bugs are subject to our psychology, but awareness is where we must begin. I learned to appreciate bugs when I found a lizard at work, and began to build a living terrarium (vivarium) for him. In a large tank, I have my anole lizard, live tropical plants, wood and bugs - tiny springtails and isopods. There's heat and UV lamps, and live crickets for food. I add water and together, these form their own little ecosystem! The bugs feed the lizard, and break down the waste and dead plant matter, returning the nutrients to the soil. Without them: my anole would die, the tank would get moldy, and eventually the soil would be left barren, killing my plants. They really are an integral part of the tank. At first they creeped me out, but now I find them quite cute! The springtails are tiny white dots that will jump if you blow air their way, and the dwarf white isopods are small, slow but hardworking. They mostly live under dirt and leaves, like the potato bugs in gardens. If you have an interest, I would highly recommend building your own vivarium. It's a fun, creative, hands-on project, and gives you an intimate experience on what an ecosystem entails.

I love insects...in fact my family and friends call me the Bug Lady! I had jumping spiders as pets when I was a kid and they do have little personalities! And I get it, that many beneficial species should get more positive attention. But I have one question: Why can’t mosquitoes become endangered or even extinct? I fail to see any redeeming qualities in them, lol. !!!

I love bugs! I have friends who raise bees, allow cat spiders to thrive in their barns, and my logo is a dragonfly. People have no idea of the impact on our food source if bugs disappeared. It is amazing that the US uses toxic pest control that is outlawed by other countries. It will deplete our in country food supply and increase the demand for imports of every day staples, if we do not change. I do not want to be totally dependent on lab created foods either, to replace what we grow.

@JerseyLynne
@JerseyLynne 5 жыл бұрын
@@bottlerocket2528 I completely agree with everything you just said. I would add, if you are spending your life energy on regrets of the past and worries about the future, you have less energy to devote to your goals, purpose and mission today. Since most people have lost touch with the Creator of this Planet...known as God - I can see why there is such a disconnect with creation. We do not see the connection with life on earth...with ourselves. OR the affect we have on other living things. Nor do we respect the Role that our Creator could play in our lives - that allows a certain love and respect to exist toward ALL that he Gave us in the way of a this Amazing Gift - called LIFE. Our relationship with HIM, is like something Out There...but not close to our hearts. Maybe a small percentage understands what I am talking about - in the way of Faith and Truth, and spiritual connectedness...but even that is so distorted by ideologies...that has caused more divisions, than a closeness as a large Family. Thus - the world is now in the troubled state we see - over-pollution, population, abused, destroyed, and struggling to contain the life that walks on two legs or more...or swims in our oceans, or flies in our skies. WE may worry about Bugs, but do not think twice about destroying a Life through abortions or wars? Kinda makes you wonder, doesn't it?
