Vatican's Financial Auditor Speaks Out

Libero Milone was appointed by Pope Francis to be the Vatican's first ever auditor general in 2015. In a historic move, he was told that he had access to all areas, and would be free to audit the accounts of any Vatican department he wished. Formerly he had worked as chairman and CEO of Deloitte in Italy, as well as a number of big firms in the UK and USA. Milone was shocked to see the standard of accounting and bookkeeping in certain parts of the Vatican, and claims he started to encounter problems with the Vatican's 'old guard' when he started to ask questions about certain transactions and sums of money. After only two years in the job, he abruptly resigned, he claims by force because he was starting to uncover major financial mismanagement and fraud at some of the highest levels of the Catholic Church.
Now Milone is taking a €9.3m lawsuit against the Vatican for unfair dismissal, loss of income, and emotional distress. The case was thrown out by a Vatican court, but Milone is now appealing.
In this extended one-on-one interview with EWTN's Colm Flynn, Milone talks about working with Pope Francis to bring about financial reform, and the problems he resistance he started to come up against, and why he is now speaking out and telling his story.

Incredible. I don't believe that Parolin or the Pope was shocked at anything that Señor Milone told them. If anything, I think they were shocked that he found out. Feigning shock or dismay is something we need to be suspicious of with these people. 11 years of this pontificate with these men in charge should have taught us to be cautious. NO one involved in any of the numerous crimes (abuse, embezzlement, to name two) has been punished.

It occurred to me the Pope may have used Milone to get dirt on the bad players in the Curia. When he had the dirt, he no longer needed Milone (or Pell for that matter) to reform anything. I can't prove this of course, but it seems suspicious the Pope just stopped having meetings with him without him asking himself, "Didn't I use to have regular meetings with Mr. Milone??? I wonder what happened to him? I should probably check up on him to see how his findings are going." And then after he got sacked, one would think the Pope would be like, "Hmmmm, why did he get sacked? He was doing an excellent job. Who sacked him?" That said, it's hard to say what kind of pressure any pope is under in Vatican court life. I don't know what power, if any, a pope actually has--so I'm open to being wrong. Although I must admit, I'm as close to 100% certain as anyone can be that this pontificate is not naive and should therefore not be afforded the benefit of the doubt.

The bottom line is that all funds and monies need to be accounted for and then audited internally and externally. No agency, even our own Church should ever think they are beyond reproach. Furthermore all accounts in the Vatican should be published publicly showing all incomes and expenditures. Of particular interest should be compensations paid to victims of sexual crimes committed by the clergy. The amounts may be confidential but subjected to strict auditing and approval by the very top of the hierarchy. For too long, decades and centuries have the Vatican and churches throughout the world been secretive of their funds. They all need to make a full and honest ‘confession’ to the 1.4 billion Catholics in the world.

Surely both Libero Milone (as auditor) and Papa Francisco (as his ultimate client) had both read the books of David Yallop: - firstly (in 1984) "In God's Name" which looked at the 33 day reighn of Pope John Paul 1 (Italian born born Albino Luciani), and - secondly (in 2012) ""The Power and The Glory: Inside the Dark Heart of John Paul II's Vatican" (Poland's Karol Józef Wojtyła), both of which discussed the fraud and corruption inside both the Vatican Bank (and associated banks) and the Vatican itself. So what happened to Libero Milone cannot have come as a complete surprised. He is lucky to have escaped with his life. And Pope Frances has to have at least a good idea of what is going on. There are two places that are "auditor-proof" - the Vatican and the Pentagon. To the great cost of humanity.

These are the strange going-ons in the Vatican, when clergy of high rank are stealing from the people who have donated their money. After the child abuse by clerics came into the light and the billions the Church has to pay in compensation to the victims, I often hear in different churches that the roof needs repair etc. I can't help thinking that the money collected is actually going into a central fund to compensate the victims!
