#20 Great Britain in Focus - St Robert Southwell, Fiorella Nash & Niall McDonagh

St Robert Southwell is a little known English martyr who was executed in 1595 at Tyburn. He was a Jesuit priest and a poet whose great concern was for the re-evangelisation of the clergy at a time of great corruption. We join Fiorella Nash, on location in Norfolk, as she relates his story.
In the second part of the programme meet Niall McDonagh, a young Irishman who shares with us his remarkable conversion story linked to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

What a beautiful episode! Fiorella Nash’s fervor is so heartening. I must take exception, however, to the idea that St Robert Southwell is “forgotten.” He is one of the bright lights of the English Martyrs and is loved and admired by Catholics as well as students of literature. Southwell’s Burning Babe is a masterpiece of English poetry. Interested individuals should delve into the works of Dom Bede Camm, OSB, who tirelessly championed the cause of the English Martyrs. Camm was also instrumental in establishing Tyburn Convent in London. I ask Camm’s intercession daily and hope that he will one day be recognized as a saint. Without Camm, several of our martyrs’ stories would have been lost. Remember, the English Martyrs are powerful advocates. After the Gloria Patri at the end of each decade of the Rosary I add “Holy Martyrs and Confessors under the Penal laws, orate pro nobis.”
