You can't force a relationship, this person even tried to go to court to ban the maternal family from contact with the late mother's children and got turned down, all because they said teh children were right in calling the new wife a step mom rather than mom. Parents who insist on this are never doing it on behalf of the children, they are doing it on behalf of the new spouse. When those kids are old enough to get married, the dad shouldn't be surprised if they ban him from the wedding when he insists on step mom being called the real mom there. One of those kids might stick it to him further by setting up a saet for the deceased mother and having her picture there.
