Yes, EA/Bioware clearly lost it a few years ago and their games have been pretty shitty since ME2. Overall the games industry is pretty toxic these days. Years ago it was mainly small teams working on games they wanted to make, while having fun at the same time. But now it's full of people who can't take criticism, lack skill, SJWs, feminists, etc and run by salesmen who's only interest is their bonus pay. It's why we see mostly rubbish games now and it's why I left it myself.

Total Bisquit himself was not a stranger to going on batshit crazy insult tirades online, to the point he hired someone to manage his Twitter and deleted his Reddit account. Still, 4 years of chemo and death from multiple organ failure is something I wish on nobody, so I've gotta respect the man, even if we ideologically disagreed, he was a contribution to the gaming world. My heart goes to his family in this time of grief.

Yeah I disagreed with quite alot of TB's opinions and stuff, but i loved the guy, specialy the friendships with Jesse Cox, Crendor and Dodger; was lovely listening to them on podcasts~
@Sneakysneaky886 жыл бұрын
It's not the kind of thing you'd wish on your worst enemy. Even if there were serious grievances between Crooks and TB, it costs nothing to rise above yourself for a handful of tweets. Even if you feel the urge to highlight things you felt he did badly on, you can still do so with a pinch of class or dare I even suggest... restraint, given how severe the circumstances of his death were. Unless the guy was proven to have intentionally done something wholly morally repugnant or was a key player in some atrocity, then by acting so callously you only highlight your own flaws. Political opposition can drive people to do awful things, but when the fight ends in such a manner, even if you personally feel relieved at their passing, you don't have to rescind your opinions or even offer them false graces; just put your sword away. If you feel your fight still needs to be fought and they must be brought up as example, that's fine, just direct away from their grave and over to where it is relevant. Eesh.

John Bain was not perfect and my opinions of him are mixed, but what really boils my blood about David Crooks' tweet wasn't that he laid out at TotalBuscuit at a bad time. Its that he specifically waited until he was dead and couldn't defend himself against Crooks. Its almost like he was afraid that TotalBuscuit's reply would calmly pick it apart and make him look like a fool, so Crooks waited until John Bain was dead so he couldn't hit back. What a fucking pathetically cowardly way to go about that.
@VampireWolve6 жыл бұрын
Bain wouldn't have defended himself for years even he hadn't cancer. Her disabled/didn't read YT comments. His twitter was run by PR. He retired from reddit. He could dish out but couldn't take hits. I know I don't have the popular opinion here, and I'm not going to change anyone's mind, but I don't mind David Crooks did here. And before I go further, let me say I love TB and was subscribed to his channel. But anyone who has lived any kind of life, (and even more so in TB's kind of life) is going to leave behind at least a few people who hate them. Why are we lying to ourselves about that? Why are you offended by that? By the nature of choosing one side in life, you ARE going to make enemies on the other side, and that's OK. There is a phrase that goes something like "You can tell a lot about a man by the enemies he chooses to make." It's not like I have not have loved ones pass away. Overall, I couldn't care less what mean or nice things anyone else said, I just wanted my loved ones back. But I hate the actively self-delusion that you seem to want. There are some people who are happy that TB is dead (cause by cancer or other means or not), and that is fine. There will be people happy that those people are dead and so on until the end of time. People get weird around dead and start changing what reality is. Death and hatred are natural, and that is OK.

People act like TB was secretly internet hitler, and he wasn't. He was a man, who made mistakes like we all do. It's funny to see people bringing up the same vague ("He was toxic", "his fanbase did x", "gamergate hurhurhur") or handful of specific examples of TB at his lowest ("get cancer" tweet, which he and the guy made amends about), while ignoring the vast amount of good things he did with his life and his time. We're not scrubbing his legacy we're just emphasizing the good things to remember him, because it's been, what, 1-2 days since he passed? Christ these people are vultures. They need some goddamn empathy.
@Emotional_Support_Twink6 жыл бұрын
Empathy has existed for a spec of dust in the path of all organisms that have lived, a method of preserving organisms of a species for natural selection. We kill and eat the bodies of countless animals and most don't feel a thing, yet when we insult the dead of humans it becomes a travesty. This is simply because we are used to it - it's how "things work". The offence caused is simply selfish to our species. It's only seen as bad to insult the dead if you cared about them, or if you were taught the reason being: "because they're dead". Thinking about it more deeply, why should we care about the dead? We waste time on people that exist no more, we could focus on the ongoing suffering of the world but we don't. Culture and traditions seem to impede the progression of the empathy that you express.

The only thing that should really be said to David Crooks at this point is, "Good luck finding another job." It's kinda sad that his hate-boner cost him years of his life effectively.

He's the one who tried to tarnish Totalbiscuit's name because Totalbiscuit gave negative thoughts on games he was a part of. He tarnished his own name, we didn't have to do anything. In fact, we haven't done anything, it's his employer that fired him after they saw the tweet. Normally yes, I am against people being fired for their beliefs, but this wasn't about beliefs. This was about Crooks being butthurt years after Totalbiscuit negatively reviewed his games, and then chose his opportunity now that Totalbiscuit can't defend himself to try and tarnish Totalbiscuit's name as some terrible person. He had an agenda, an sought to slander someone who was dead and couldn't rebut those claims because anyone with half a brain would be able to do just that. Tl'DR This wasn't about beliefs, it was about someone throwing a temper tantrum and trying to make Totalbiscuit out to be a monster, and he only revealed his own colors as a monster in turn. His termination is the result.

The fact that some sad individuals are so overjoyed by his passing only serves to show how great of an impact this man had on the industry, games journalism, KZbin, and the gaming "community" as a whole. @@welkingunther4298 this is a little late but, they arent comparable. The person tb said to have cancer was not in anyway affected by cancer. A stupid remark, yes, but not a hurtful or impactful one. Example: if i were to call you a "blind asshat", it is a dickish thing to do, but is clearly exaggerated as i doubt you are blind. If you died and i came out and said "finally he died". What part of that statement can be taken as hyperbole: none, because you died and i am mocking you, while acknowledging your death.

I wish his family well and all those affected, but you can't just wish a harmful disease that MANY people are facing today and are heavily affected by. What if the person TB said to get cancer and die had a family member that died of it? I accepted that I would never likely agree with his views, but his content was nonetheless top notch. In his passing, I do wish his family the best. What David did was simply inexcusable, as no matter how much distaste you may have for someone, it just isn't right to vent and slander them post-mortem. TB deserves better, even if you disagree with him or his actions. Cancer sucks, and hopefully, he'll rest in peace now, free of the daily pain. Shame on you, David. I liked TB for his consumer advocacy, and highlighting indie devs. But I rolled my eyes at his “60fps or bust” attitude, he actually cheated himself out of some great gaming experiences because they were 30fps. I would, too. I have an One X, and if a game has the option to play at 60fps on 1080p, I’d pick that over the 4K mode at 30fps. I’m hoping next gen, Sony and MS prioritize cpus over gpus. However, if there’s a great game that only has 30fps, I’m not going to bypass it over such a thing. That’s something TB did, and even Jesse and Dodger would look exasperated with him sometimes. “Hey, wanna share in this wonderful experience we”re having?” “Nope, 30fps, I’m going to go play more Star Wars Galaxies on my phone.”

I think in this specific case, TB deserves a lot of respect in his passing because he did try to do a lot of good for the community. But I don't agree with the principle here as a whole. "No matter how much distaste you may have for someone, it just isn't right to vent and slander them post-mortem". There are a lot of powerful people who have done really horrible things (most obvious example, Hitler) , in which case I think it is fine to criticize their behavior and say good riddance. I'm not a fan of TB, but I understand and respect his impact on the gaming and KZbin industry. Absolutely disgusted someone would revel in the death of an innocent person simply because they don't agree, especially when they share the same industry. Even in death TB was able to show us the dark side of game development. A fitting farewell IMO. RIP Bain, your contribution to gaming will not be forgotten.

In all honesty TotalBiscuit could be a bit of an ass at times, be extreme on things etc. but it doesn't excuse the dev in question essentially saying it was a good thing that he died. I don't get why so many gamers are suddenly caring about TB. The dickhead went full SJW over the past couple years, hopping on board with the very mentality that is destroying the gaming industry. My condolences to his family, but the gaming industry is better off without him.
@skyesfury85116 жыл бұрын
Alan, I think you missed the part where I pointed out that he became one of the problems that the gaming industry faces. His "normal attitude" became very SJW over the past few years. He became the very thing he originally spoke against. Why would gamers not be glad such a horrible voice is no longer around to negatively impact the industry? I'm not saying celebrate his death, I'm saying we, as gamers, should be glad he can no longer poison the industry. Would you, as a gamer, not be glad if Anita or Zoe or the rest of the SJW "gamers" were no longer around to harm the industry? He became the thing he built his fame on speaking out against.

Jeezas freakin' Christ, a person dies and so many are so tasteless in their remarks. So you didn't like the man, can't you just keep it to yourselves? It's like he was a war criminal, or did something personal to you. Let the man rest and people mourn. Even if you considered TB to be a total jerk in life, does that justify being a piece of shit to him in death? Celebrating a person's death shows just how this world is messed up. People not only are completely disrespectful, but only show they hold grudges over stupid shit for so long. So you have a stupid opinion, great. Everybody has one, it doesn't even care if you're right or wrong. The man passed away and there's nothing he did really worth so much hatred. Let it go.
@stupidhand156 жыл бұрын
Part of me needs to point out that there are multiple cultures around the world where celebrating one's death is expected. Now, I know that's not what you're referring to, but I need to point it out anyways. Not every culture sees death as something bad or sad, some see it as just another step in life.
@x.kalibre6 жыл бұрын
Well, yes I understand what you mean. But I'd say there's a huge difference between that and what is happening on this instance. On cultures that celebrate one's death, it's usually people that cared for the deceased that do the celebration, not people that hated said person, or that were merely trolling for the sake of douchebaggery. Good thing to point that out though, so it's completely clear what we're talking about here =)
@x.kalibre6 жыл бұрын
Even if that was the case, what's the point of backlashing when the person is already dead? It'll only hit those who were close to the person, not the person herself. And those people are innocent in all of this. Say all you will, there is absolutely no justification for this, even if TB was to blame as well.
@x.kalibre6 жыл бұрын
No need to get so philosophical over the matter, I think it's a bit simpler than that. Is TB around to hear others complaints about him? No. Are his loved ones responsible for any bulshit he pulled? I'd say no as well. So... no, death doesn't clear all sins, you're right. But to go after a guy that just died seems petty and unreasonable. Let people mourn, and use some common sense on your expression of feelings about him. Plus, it seems you're describing him as some power mad dictator that killed people for speaking out against him. It's true that I didn't know TB all too well, but that doesn't seem the case too. :P I've never seen a celebration of a person's death that didn't look like a dick move. We wouldn't be talking about this if it was the mere conversation that TB was far from perfect. No, some douchebag actually tweeted he was glad he died and did a several post rant on the matter. That's at least as shitty, if not more, than anything that TB ever did. And whilst one could even argue that the punishment fits the crime (not that I agree with that standpoint), the criminal in this case is already dead. Did the ones around him warrant enough hatred to go through this? I mean... FFS, even if you have the need to express TB wasn't cool, you CAN at least not say you're happy about his death. It's just ridiculous.
@x.kalibre6 жыл бұрын
Nah sorry, can't say I'm avoiding the problem, and I'm not defending him either. And are you actually saying his relatives "deserve" this? Now that's a shame. Hope you never get to witness someone say they're happy a relative of yours died. Somehow, that doesn't seem peachy fine, at all. It doesn't stop the grieving process, but it sure as hell makes it worse. Way to go internet, what a great win for mankind. *clap clap* Yes, people had beef with him and it doesn't magically go away because he is dead. But you also seem to think that since people suffered by his hands, they're also magically entitled to having the same behavior or worse. Why? His behavior was reprehensible and this isn't any better. And it should be, if that was really the point. So my question is... Are you willing to continue to argue with a dead person? And in such hateful manner? If that's what makes you happy, then suit yourself. To me, it just seems toxic. Some people prefer to change things and not continue a shit cycle that by the looks of it, seems to go on for a very long time. So please, learn to let go or at least aknowledge that the discussion of TB's behavior could be done in a way much more productive than shouting to the world that you're happy that he's dead. It certainly made the subject a very hot topic, but it could have also been done in a much less douchebaggy fashion. ^^

He was a Systems and Planets programmer on MEA, and Core Systems programmer on BFront2. Systems programmers are usually the people working on tools and functions the game designers use while putting the game together. An analogy: he would make the carpenter tools for someone building a house. He'd make sure the hammers could hammer, the saws were sharp, the lumbar dried and unwrapped, and the nails unbent. And if someone didn't have the right kind of screw driver he'd build one to fit the need. He likely had a hand in building the backend systems that weaved the Lootbox system throughout Battlefront 2. And made sure it functioned to EAs specifications. But he was hardly alone on that, and it wasn't his call to make. Well his choice was either do it, quit, or get fired. The people responsible of EAs anti-consumer monetization are sitting in the upper management of EAs cooperate offices.
