Screw these guys. When I worked in the electronics department these same group of scalpers would come in as soon as we had a fresh stock of PS5s They’d each buy one and then demand I accept their tax exempt cards. So they wouldn’t have to pay the sales tax. I tried so hard to deny sales to them, pretend we didn’t have any or stock them later in the day so regular people had a chance of being able to buy them. I got into several arguments with them and had my store manager turn them away. They made my life miserable.

My folks grew up in small farming towns in Iowa, if they wanted a top of the line TV or VCR they would just go to Des Moines and buy it at MSRP in a Sears. When I worked for Walmart it would piss me off when the store managers would communicate with each other to gather up stock for scalpers. I still remember the limited edition 3ds's. The store manager would come up to us and show us a text message from the district manager communicating to other store managers telling them to give the customer (scalper) whatever he wanted as he is spending loads of money on the items. He pulled me and the dept manager to the back room and had us load everything onto a cart and when the guy showed up he bought our entire inventory of 3ds's and the games that came out that day. Same thing happened with switches. Whenever I asked them what he needed all the consoles for they would respond with "oh im donating them to a shelter for kids" mhm yeah okay buddy.

I worked at Target when they had the limited edition Spider-man PS4s. Thankfully I lived in a small town with limited foot traffic, I clocked in the morning and only bought one at the end of my shift. Played it fair, didn't take one off inventory and hide it for myself to buy later. At the end of my shift there was still one left after I got mine. All the customers that walked in only got one for themselves, this was like a year or two before online ordering really became a big thing. It's nice when everyone played it cool and everything was chill.

A person that buys from a scalper is more of an enabler (though, even then that's not exactly what that term means). Retailers in my town completely shut down online orders for PS5s during the scalper plague. Only way to get them was to call up, check for stock and then go in and order face to face. They took note of you and enforced the one per customer rule. The scalpers would have to have recruited a LOT of people to get stock lmao. One store even put up fake stock online and took note of every inhumanly fast order and blocked them from further purchase attempts, alledgedly the scalper responsible whinged about that on instagram later that day (story from a friend, accuracy may vary).

I remember the time where Games Workshop was selling Warhammer 40,000: Indomitus game sets. At first, they had supposedly limited stock for the sets, which were near-instantly snatched up by scalpers and instantly put on ebay for like twice the price (these sets were already like $200 as a base price). And then, after being "out-of-stock" for a while, suddenly the game sets all became made-to-order. This isn't just the retailers 'failing to provide security' from bots. You'd have to be crazy to think the retailer management themselves (higher up) aren't in on this scalping. I actually got kinda lucky with mine. I don’t remember how I ended up there but I noticed that they had some in stock on the website (MW2 bundle) and I added it to my cart and I second guessed myself before actually ordering it. A week or two later I was back on the website and everything was sold out and I was regretting not buying it the first time… that’s when I noticed there was something in the cart. Click on it and sure enough, the PS5 was still there… go through the process and get a confirmation expecting it to bounce back at some point and throughout the next week or two I was constantly checking the tracker and it never updated and I thought for sure they canceled it and that follow-up was coming. The morning it was supposed to be here at home in Illinois, I was in North Carolina for work in my way back when I check my email and it was shipped like 20 minutes before i checked it. I have never been in a bigger hurry to get home before in my life. By the time I got home it was sitting in my garage. Those couple weeks were like an M. Night Shyamalan movie I swear…

it is a job like anything else, nothing bad about it but nothing to brag about either. i made over $13 000 in profit from reselling PS5s to consumers in need. if people really wanted it, they were willing to pay an additional price to get it right away and I was glad to assist them. i stopped reselling ps5s in 2023 though so I never had any problem with unsold units. it was a good run to earn a little extra money, nothing that really changes ur life big financially.

He called me to see if I wanted one, which I did, but he also bought another two. His plan was to sell them at cost price plus whatever it would cost to ship them, or free for collection (as we both hate scaplers due to event tickets etc). Anyway, he listed them for sale at retail price, explaining why he was doing it and also included the receipts with them. Long story short; the (understandable) mistrust was unbelievable. He only managed to sell one this way about a month later. The other was bought by a mutual friend a few months after that.

About ten minutes later the same guy approached me in the store except for this time he was wearing a Walmart vest. He asked me if I had any kids and I told him yes two teenagers. He said follow me to the back of the store. We walked back by the fishing gear, he opened a blue door to the back and handed me a PlayStation and said we got this in today. A simple solution is for retailers to not sell online for the until the supply stabilizes and limit the number of consoles to 1 per person and record the state ID for each purchase. It won't stop someone from getting 2 or 3 with the help of non gamer friends but it will stop large groups from driving up the prices. They’ve been looking forward to it, some way more than others. Then you have scalpers come in to essentially take away their chances of receiving said happiness and hold them ransom until they cave and pay a hefty price tag for an item that isn’t the scalper’s own original content. The scalpers know this. The scalpers intentionally take advantage of the desperation that the consumer is feeling, and wishes to profit off of it. It's a tough one, but I don't think they can do online sales for these, maybe only big retailers who only sell in person and by lottery. Most of the news mainly talked about how a manufacturing error in 1 of 2 companies of those GPU plugs caused them not to connect fully and leaving the gap wide enough to cause sparks to jump in between and melt them in the process, Nvidia's plans what to do and how recall would look like, etc. Then, some time later, i remember a video talking about scalpers getting into issues with a buttload of those GPUs. They couldn't test every single one of them, stores would refuse to replace those and a majority of official market sites (eBay for example) would basically make them pay extra if cards they sold would turn out to be faulty and they would have to pay back the whole cost of the card to any customer who would have purchased by using their site.

The way that Valve rolled out the steam deck was a pretty effective method of curbing scalping. I'm sure it still happened but knowing that: 1. I was on a wait list and had a secure spot 2. The account lifetime requirement made it so that people who would actually use the device will own it directly. Companies often produce devices at a loss so doing stuff that stops the devices from sitting in a warehouse and not having players buying games or dlc.

I still remember that day during the thick of the PS5 scarcity, I walked into this small EB Games(Canadian GameStop) at a mall. The conversation about the scapling was sprung up when I was talking about to my brother. I bought mine from PlayStation direct a year after they came out and that was a trial all on its own. I even helped my friends who wanted one get one. I liked the feeling so much I decided to be the anti scalper for my friends and whenever someone I knew wanted one and didn’t wanna pay a scalper I helped them find a way to get one. "scalpers" thing is fairly common practice in my country, heck entire region, since like 90s, only they do it for stuff like medicine most of the time. They exploit loopholes to get medicine from official channels, then they resell it for couple of times bigger price after there's shortage. Latest thing was some medicine for diabetes, apparently you can lose weight from it, so they would get hold of it and then resell it as weight loss medicine. This was obviously reported and it's now super hard to get this medicine even if you are diabetic, which obviously screws the actual diabetic patients. This is why what we call "fatasses" (because they want to profit by sitting on their butts and never actually working) are loathed, however sadly, our region is full of people like this. All want to be get rich quick types, but none want to put in the effort and work.

The problem I have always had with Scalpers has remained the same since I first experianced them when queueing for concerts when I was younger and that is that it is 100% predatory. You would hear them yelling "got any spare tickets" and once I listened to the guy negotiate a sale of a spare ticket from someone....they paid the guy around 10% below list price then tried to sell the ticket for a 100% mark up. The person selling is thinking "great at least I have got some money back that would have been a total loss" while the sclaper is laughing as there is always someone who is desperate to go to a show thats sold out. Its the same with a PS5 or a Series X, there is always someone who will not wait and has to have the latest gadget 5 mins ago. I was lucky enough to get mine because Currys(a UK retailer) made people enter a draw to be able to buy the consoles. So they knew they had 5000, they drew 5000 random names out of a hat and would then ring the customer to ask them to complete the purchase. Did this 100% stop scalpers?? I doubt it, but it required an actual human to answer the phone call from them to complete the purchase which is more than a lot of places were doing.

Technically, no they didn't. Console sales are actually their biggest losses in terms of unit sales. Per unit sales actually make them go negative. What makes the consoles profitable is: paying for online, buying games from their stores, subscriptions other consoles that gradually overtake the loss, while also allowing the company to be profitable for several years over the console's lifespan

No as much as it'd be easy to dunk on them no. The shortage at the time was mostly due to poor timing with covid. Literally everything then was backed up. And then you had a giant shit show with just the retailers and distributors. Not to mention that xbox had it slightly better but sony had their ps5 getting scooped up and in short supply because many of these are being shipped from another country. And so yea for a while shit has been rough but with xbox it being in America means that as we started to get over covid so would our companies. But Japan and many other places still had tough restrictions/ people afraid and what not so yea it took longer. All in all it was just a giant series of unfortunate events that kept stacking on eachother and meanwhile the companies lose out because all those scaled consoles aren't contributing to online subscriptions which is probably why playstation subscriptions got so shitty lately.

If everyone had just been patient from the onset they would've had to sell the consoles at a loss from the start and scalpers would've never been a problem. @@mandalorianroby2542 Kind of hard for them to have done so when there were physical limitations to parts due to the effects of the pandemic. Not saying that console manufacturers ever seem to launch with a sufficient number of consoles available, but the usual supply restraints at launch were VASTLY multiplied for this generation, and there was literally *nothing* they could do about it. You can't make more consoles when you don't have the parts, and the parts can't be made because there isn't enough materials to make those parts, and there aren't enough people working to both procure those materials or make the parts themselves.

Microsoft and Walmart had a good system going. I can’t remember how it worked, but basically they would contact you when a small shipment would come in and then you could only buy one Xbox and then you had to go into the store you shipped it to and have them scan your phone to verify your purchase. They made it so inconvenient for someone trying to get multiple consoles to resell but perfect for an average consumer. Through that system I was able to get a console about 7 months after release for $500.

I actually got lucky and had mine day one. You know what makes it crazier. I went to a GameStop 45 min away. And had to race around 50 people to the store in the mall from outside to secure a spot in line to reserve. Old fashion way no less. So I never had to deal with online reserve. These companies need to go back to brick and mortar reserves for big items like this. Make someone physically show up to buy.

I wanted to get one from a friend's store, so I vacillated for a couple of days before pre-ordering from a different place late in September of 2020. Because of those two days of inaction, I had to wait until late February 2021 instead of getting it in late November. That said, I'd never buy from a scalper. My friend still doesn't have a PS5 because, "Not enough games" and, "If they keep this up, I'm going straight for the Pro version when that gets released". I don't blame him. It's been two years and my PS5 has mostly been a quieter, faster PS4 so far.

Over here, to get a PS5, you had to be physically at a store and be a "clubcard" member,(which is free) for that extra security so you can't just buy a bunch of PS5s in 1 go as they link your purchases with your clubcard and it's far easier to restrict scalping

This stuff while bad has never affected me or even my family at all. We were always so poor so entertainment such as a shiny new console came second to everything else in life. Even when the PS5's came out and we had finally gotten in a better place financially, none of us ever cared about a PS5. We were just fine with our PS2, 3 and 4. So in march of 2021 when our parents left to go do some shopping and they came back with a PS5 we were in absolute shock. We were so accustomed to not getting the newest console til it has been out for about 4 or 5 years. So when we got a PS5 less than a year after launch, its fair to say we were shocked. It's funny how it happened. A person at Rent a Center that my Grandmother was friends with, let her know that they had a single PS5 in stock. So they secretly went and got the PS5 and me and my brothers were none the wiser to the whole situation.

Zombies Player, this sounds pretty much like my situation as a kid too. My parents weren’t financially well off, but they made sure we wanted for nothing. Well fed on home cooked basic ingredients etc. We always took our holidays in this run down little caravan on this farm, because we had connections to the farmer and we were able to stay there for free every summer. I remember once my dad made a treasure hunt for us and left clues left inside hollows of trees, inside empty bottles etc…which then led to the treasure itself which was a massive haul of pick ‘n’ mix sweets. The joy that gave my sisters and I. We also had these friends who were able to afford the latest game console, so we were given the previous generation from them, just as the new one arrived. We didn’t care. To us we were just so happy to play games we would never have been able to otherwise. As an adult with my own money, I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase the PS5 when it came out, but I didn’t take it for granted. I am always grateful now, after my upbringing, to appreciate stuff I can buy now that I’d never been able to have as a kid, just as I still appreciate the smaller things in life, such as taking forever to eat one single chocolate, to savour the flavour, or taking walks out in the countryside.

One way they could prevent this in the future is to require VPNs off when ordering and keep track of which IP addresses have ordered them. If too many are being bought from a small area, or too frequently, an investigation could start to find out why, which could lead to police getting involved, and potentially arresting them and confiscate their stock if they're found to be scalping. If they're delivered to homes or picked up, noting and verifying the home addresses and/or license plates could also be done.

I’m so glad I’ve been seeing PS5s and Series Xs in stores! It really feels like waking up from a nightmare. Just so many people wanting these consoles and you either had to be REALLY lucky or sell your soul to get one.
