Ex Chief Justice UU Lalit To NDTV: The Supreme Court collegium is a "perfectly correct and balanced" way to appoint judges to the top court of the country, former Chief Justice UU Lalit told NDTV on Sunday, after Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju called the system "opaque". "These ("opaque, unaccountable") are his personal views... It's a perfectly, correct and balanced way of doing things. It is a system where every viewpoint is considered," he said in an interview, days after his retirement earlier this week. The comments come two days after the Supreme Court expressed displeasure over the delay by the Centre in clearing the names recommended for appointment as judges in the higher judiciary, including those reiterated by the collegium, and said keeping them pending is "something not acceptable".

Rare kind of interview. Incisive questions were asked in cool way, without any accusation or aggression and CJ U.U.lalit addressed all the pertinent questions without slightest Dodge honestly and truthfully. My bad, I thought his association and appearance in Amit Shah case is closed contested nexces between the two. My views changed after this informative debate on NDTV. Precisely he answered the tough questions of selection of benches, judge appointments, cases priority listing, political pressure etc. But he rightly said the Rajia sabha or governor nominee is not a stature of India's Chief Justice level.

I ,a 77 years old Indian , a Tamil Saivaite for the consumption of the fanatic , non - existent and forcibly thrust " HINDU " identity by the British Colonialists , disagree that the Indian judiciary is independent. It is positively on the side of the moneyed , the political class , and is mostly committed against the poor, the socially - suppressed class of people. The judgement on the NEET is a clear pointer to that. Under what divine direction had the same court chosen and approved the CBSE syllabus for the NEET for the whole country, knowing fully well that the majority of the children from the rural, poor background and those coming under the syllabi of VARIOUS STATE GOVERNMENTS do not have even an iota of a chance to spend money and study under the C B S E syllabus. It was an order deliberately and consciously passed to favour the children of the rich and the elite and bar the children of the poor and socially suppressed class of this unfortunate nation from becoming doctors. How the Honor. Supreme Court of India dithered before reluctantly coming to the help of the abandoned migrant workers going on their bare feet and many dying on the way is yet another pointer. Still,the same court's alacrity in coming to save Mr Arnab is yet another pointer. One can point to many such acts of the judiciary that are patently anti poor. The very recent judgement on the 10 percent reservation favouring " the poor " earning 8 lakhs or less simply is a mockery on the REAL POOR of this country. Cry my countrymen and pray for the country.

Very interesting and in depth interview! As a commoner I have following queries ; 1.Dioligue with collegium & top executive must happen before collegium sends final recommendations. 2. In case above diologue is not desired then SC recommendations should give the option of selecting 90~95 %of names and executive must have the option of leaving few if they have any reservations! 3.Tradition n of having CJI's for 60,70, 80 days etc should be done away with. This will bring some stability and improve output at the top.

The problem is Judicial officers lack organizational skills and Administrative Acumen. That's why you see entire Judicial system not functioning to it's optimum levels. Take for example, Human Rights Commission, Lok Ayukta, Consumer commissons etc etc. Their functioning is below par. Hence there is urgent need for comprehensive judicial Reforms all over india and judicial institutions.
