I live in the US and I agree this nation *has become* callous of war. It wasn't always that way. Prior to Korea, the majority of Americans were isolationist ... in a bad sense. Also, blind to injustice at home. I don't believe in "American exceptionalism." But I also believe that America is indispensable (again, might sound dissonant). That may not always be true going forward, but it is true now. Especially with the ongoing climate crisis. Witness Ukraine. I wonder what Truman or Eisenhower would want us to do there? Amazing to think that Poland is housing something like four million refugees and we barely hear about on the news.

I wish these interviews would talk about the bigger picture: This problem of Putin using nuclear weapons also greatly concerns China, India, and many other nations. *I don't believe China will tolerate Russian use of nukes.* Such a move will wreck the things China cares about most: world markets, trade, China's reputation as a Russian partner, stability and harmony in society (recall they are already having Covid problems and chaos internally), and other problems too, such as fallout raining down and causing panic, food and water hoarding, and so on in China. India is in a similar boat, and that doesn't begin to talk about the EMP from such an attack, that could extend into EU and NATO nations, poision air and water, and also affect Russia too. Putin can threaten, but I don't believe China or India will put up with nuclear attacks, as they will suffer.

A nuke's radiation would also affect neighbouring countries. It would be a de facto declaration of war on Europe, and draw the appropriate response. Presumably, Putin would go thousands of miles away, indifferent to the impact of radiation all along Russia's western flank, and of fallout reaching Moscow, too. He seems to have lost all reason, but it remains to be seen whether the same can be said of his generals.

I think much of what I’ve seen on this question misses the real danger. The use of nuclear weapons in war has fallen under a taboo that for the first time in the history of warfare, has worked. Nuclear weapons have not been used in anger since 9 August 1945. If it happens again, Pandora’s box is open, and it may come to be seen as just another weapon in a nation’s arsenal.

They were not used in anger, jus for the record. They were used as a measure that absolutely was th alternative to dealing with an all_out last ditch effort by the Japanese, in which tens of thousands of their youth would have been sacrificed and, possibly, similar numbers of allied troops would have been sent in for who knows how long. Formerly classified has been scoured for decades, by numerous key analysts, and there's damn little argument among those in th know.

@@rimrunz1795 My use of the phrase “in anger” was meant in the sense of “in war.” And no matter the rationale advanced for bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki (and i agree with what you say, as well as the fact that NO U.S. politician would ever face the voters having sent multitudes of servicemen to their deaths in an invasion of Japan while keeping nuclear weapons in reserve), I stand by the rest of my statement.

More and more US troops were coming home in body bags and the Public’s backing for the war was dropping. The funds from war bonds were also slowing up. The US lost considerably less than japan but they suffered horribly in the process* . Long fighting, rampant PTSD, low morale at certain points, VERY slow advancements, etc. The US DID NOT want to invade main land Japan. They bombed the literal crap out of major cities even before they dropped the bombs which was basically an atrocity. They wanted to do everything because they knew it would be a blood bath on both ends. They knew almost every single citizen would pick up arms against them. You think the island hopping was bad ? I more get the feeling that these talks between Putin and Trump has everything to do with all of this going on being that Trump's 2016 election campaign was funded by Russia, and Trump wanting to take the U.S. out of NATO to weaken Europe, then his little attempt to take over America with the insurrection that failed. Trump and Putin ARE in cahoots together on this! Except for Trump got taken out while Russia went along with their plan anyways. Why else would nuclear documents be missing from the archives?? Answer the question Donnie! That's the big one!!! And this is the true root of what's happening with Trump and Putin. C'mon people ....put it altogether!

The ones with most to lose in the case of a nuclear war will be those who have not had a chance to live. The newborns. The Children. The Adolescents. That younger generation whose aspirations for the future will be suddenly truncated. In contrast, people in their late seventies or eighties have little time left anyway. So a nuclear war would just bring something that they have been seriously contemplating or expecting at any moment-death. Putin himself, and many of his top supporters have already lived their lives. So it's understandable that they view things much differently from those who haven't.

It'd be wise for NATO and the West to listen to Zelensky, not to strike Russia but to take these warning pretty seriously. On the flip side, Ukraine and the West must take advantage of the confusion in Putin's camp by supplying Ukraine more decisive weapons.

If he did go nuclear in Ukraine, it would be bad for Russian too. Nato would likely get more involved. Also, the land that has been contaminated would then become difficult to travel in. My understanding is that NATO has equipment for soldiers to be able to travel through those lands for a period with little harm. Russia would probably have less capability to do so. Also, if the winds are blowing toward the north or northeast after detonation, the fallout would blow back towards Russia.

@@johncaze757 Of course nobody wants that. But if Putin chooses to use a tactical or small yield nuclear weapon on Ukrainian soil, it cannot go unanswered. If it goes unanswered then other nations with nuclear capabilities will realize there are no consequences if they choose to go nuclear. It's the level of response that needs to be questioned. And it's clearly not an easy decision on the part of US or other NATO countries and Western allies. The least escalatory response would be to condemn it, increase sanctions for NATO and the US to move units into a more aggressive posture (including nuclear). But that response still lets him get away with it. Another option would be to do the above but to also have more direct involvement from the US and possibly NATO allies and take out Russian targets in Ukraine. Decimate their capabilities and possibly even pull back to let the Ukrainians finish the job. I can't imagine that the US would choose a nuclear option. Again, not easy decisions. Nobody wants a world war and much less a nuclear one.
