Im from Venezuela. My country is the worst country of South America in a lot of things and one of the most violent of the entire world. The prison in the Island or Margarita is a shame for all the Venezuelans. Those inmates are in control of the prison. They can get out of the prison and return whatever they want. They can kill people outside the prison, they can rape people outside the people, and they CAN RETURN SAFELY to the prison like the prison was some fuck@n hotel. Those inmates extort innocent people outside prison. There is a gang called "El tren de aragua" that controls those prisons. There are the PRANS (they called themselves like that) and they are the most violent killers in that prison and they are the rulers of that prison. All of that with the authorization of the Maduro's regime. The inmates are allowed to have cellphones inside the prison and text SMS and call people to extort them and to tell that if they don't pay them money, they are going to kill them and going to kill their families. I'm a fan of Larry Lawton, but this topic enraged me because my people of Venezuela are starving to death ( i am not, thankfully) and those animals/criminals are outside in the streets forcing us to return to our homes before 5:00 pm because they are the owners of the streets and police here are criminals too. As a native Norwegian, I always have to defend why prisoners should have a high standard of living whenever people from other countries outside Europe ask me about it. Im super happy to hear that you understand exactly why we should treat prisoners like human beings and not as animals. Its not about not giving them punishment, taking away their freedom is punishment enough. Its about making them good people for when they get out, not just for us as members of society, but also from a socio economic perspective. Just take a number from earlier (somewhere bewteen 2010 and 2014 I cant remember) where recidivism rates in the US was up to 80% and in Norway was 20%. And most of the arguements i get back is "Well, what if a man murdered your entire family". Most of the crimes committed are not about a man murdering my entire family, its about people like junkies. And now take a junkie in either Norway or US. This person will cost society large sums of tax money through legal proceedings and free legal help from the state. They will cost money for insurance companies if they break or steal stuff to enforce their drug habits. If the person being stolen from doesnt have insurance, the cost will be directly from that person which sucks even more. If they overdose, they cost more tax money because EMT's have to revive them and give them beta blockers which cost money. They also cost money in time where police have to deal with them, and the police could spend more time catching people like murderers or rapists. Would you rather that the state try and rehabilitate that person, give them education and help, so that when they get out they can actually contribute to society? Or are you gonna punish them like animals and have them repeat the "do crime -> do time -> get out -> do crime -> do time" etc? And if a man kills my entire family, I would wish him dead. But if he doesnt die, when he gets out, I would hope that he was a functioning member of society and not murdering someones elses family.

Does it not bother you that someone like Anders Brievik, who murdered 77 people, is being treated so well? It just doesn't seem like justice, and someone like that is beyond rehabilitation.
@planetaryg0
@planetaryg0 Жыл бұрын
@@lawv804i think people like that shouldn’t stop the rest of the population from being treated like human beings. also, the prison system shouldn’t be about “justice”, that’s counterproductive and doesn’t correct behaviour. a degree of punishment is part of rehabilitation but that shouldn’t be the main focus. finally, there are life sentences for those who can’t be rehabilitated (tho i think everyone can be rehabilitated to some degree)

I feel like we in america get so caught up in our illusion of Justice in wanting prisoners to be “locked up to rot” that we often forget that we need to Rehabilitate people too. But people would rather ruin people’s lives over a mistake or bad situation, because those who aren’t in that kind of situation just feel that the convicted don’t deserve a chance to be better because “why don’t I get that chance when I haven’t done anything illegal??” It’s quite sad.

There is research in peer reviewed journals that shows a strong correlation between keeping family together and going strait after being in prison (UK slang for not commiting any further crimes). One thing I found interesting is that either in Norway or Sweden there is a prison where you are expected to do two jobs. One is cleaning etc, the other is education. What many forget is that prisons ae supposed to be about rehabilitation as well as punishment. The incarceration in itself is the punishment. Some of these guys in the prison mentioned did not know how to use a washing machine or hoover etc effectively. They get taught how to do that as well as the wall washing floor sweeping and associated tasks. The only place I have seen more spotless is a barracks when the inspection is due.Wish I could find those articles again but they were behind a paywall.

You got it exactly right. The emphasis in Germany is threefold- 1. crime prevention (in the sense of giving youth many options for hobbies & activities, 6 weeks paid vacation per year and avoiding poverty through affordable healthcare, etc.) 2. deescalation when it seems a crime could happen at any moment and 3. rehabilitation if a crime is taken place. Having grown up in the US, my memory of it is that it's much more about scaring people into what would happen if they committed a crime- not about trying to show them why there are better options. Then it's all about punishiment, punishment, punishment once a crime has been commited.

I live in Japan. The prisons for the elderly, are elderly that are either on the street, or close to being on the street, have no one to assist them and cannot take care of themselves. The senior center is an apt description. They're basically harmless people whose lives suck in their declining years and the government has an obligation to help them.

I don’t ever intend on committing crimes and being incarcerated but my son is my entire world and there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for him and to be there for him. I’m willing to bet almost every prisoner able to have contact with their children more than just seeing them through thick glass will be on their BEST behavior. Recognizing the importance for both the prisoner and the child really shows that the focus is rehabilitation and not just dehumanizing and cause as much suffering as possible. Who would have thought.

If you feel bad, don't worry: Brazilian Penal Code is much, much and much worse than USA: -> Here the maximum sentence is 30 years and AWAYS have a reduction; -> Prisoners can be temporarily released at Christmas or even have intimate visits; -> A teenager can't spent more than 3 years in jail, NO MATTER what crime that committed; -> The supreme court is chasing, fining and censuring anyone who criticizes it; -> The supreme court releases politicians convicted for corruption and even dangerous drug dealers; -> The corrupt president appoints his lawyer to the supreme court and he will be appointed; -> The supreme court overrides the autonomy of states and municipalities when a law they don't like is passed (like a project from State of Sao Paulo to ban cellphones in prisions); -> Every project to make laws and a better penal code isn't approved and when it is, the supreme court overturns it; -> The media and human rights NGO's promove degeneracy and laws worse than the ones that already exist. This is a sample. There are many other that we brazilians need to carry. So, if you feel bad for this woman remember that here the things are extremely worse.

For me the worst part would be the loss of freedom since I don't have many loved ones and probably never will again. I don't mean freedom in a Murica' way but the loss of choice. Like losing access to the internet, only being able to eat what I'm given when it's given to me even if it's good food, loss of access to hiking, climbing, fishing, choice of friends, even choice of clothing, etc...I need my brain stimulated or I start to go crazy. Crapping in a bucket around people? Meh... You get used to it pretty quick. But even most of the prisons on this list would drive me insane nearly immediately due to the loss of being able to do really whatever I want when I want.

I lost my dignity in the military when I had to use bathrooms that were literally just a bunch of toilets right next to each other in the middle of the room with no dividers whatsoever. That was one way to get closer to your comrades lol

I can see why the prison in Venezuela could be better, but I would still argue the Norweigen prison is better because I reckon the re-offending rate afterwards is probably lower because they do more to focus on re-habilitation. I could be wrong though. Anyway great video!!

@@Justin-pe9cl The problem is most prison systems is they think making them as horrible as possible will scare them into never committing crimes again when in fact it take away the humanity of prisoners, which causes a lot of them to re-commit crimes, which is something privatized prisons just happen to conveniently profit from.

Hi Larry, could u do a video on Joran van der Sloot, once we know more about the jail (I assume not prison) he is going to? Things like what is the jail like, what would it be like for him once he arrives, food, daily routine, risk of violence towards him and would he be in solitary confinement based on his profile, would he have interaction with other prisoners, etc. That would be great, thanks!

Im from Sweden and I kinda feel like life in prison here seems better than outside! And the time a person serves for murder and rape makes me kinda sick! The longest sentence you can get is like 18 years! Or you get life in prison but that means like 20 years at most! But most of the time people just serve 2/3 of there sentence! I mean a robber is one thing! But I dont want my neighbor to be some psycho, who murdered 3 people! If you have murdered before what is one more death gonna do when prison is gonna be that nice!

I am ultimately all for rehabilitation and think it's awful the state of some of the US prisons but at the same time, I feel like the tax payers shouldn't be burdened with the costs of some of these amentities that these prisoners have. Some of these places are better than the places that poverty stricken are treated I mean some of these places are nicer than their actual life. I feel like it actually encourage crime for some people based on how nice these are.

I can't really speak for any other country than Norway, but if I asked people here if they want to go to prison they would say no (yes, even if it's Halden Prison). Why sacrifice your freedom to do anything just to be sent into a limited area you can't leave with very limited things to do compared to the outside? The personal space you get is very limited compared to what you can get outside prison. Even if you get the personal space, the "guards" will still check in on you. If you feel encouraged to do crime to get into a prison here, there are way better options provided to help you get back up. Let's not compare with America which looks like a third world country compared with Norway.

(JUST an FYI this is coming from a non-offender, or outsider to the prison system. Also Canadian so some of my views might be skewed so I apologize in advance if I sound ignorant) At about 4 minutes in I was thinking "Knowing how many people go into the prison systems with mental health or internal trauma (the whole 'nature loads the weapon but nurture pulls the trigger') I''d like to know what their psychological/mental rehab system is if the interior is aesthetically wholesome". And this is coming from someone who has Aspergers Syndrome, which is a struggle and a half let alone if I committed a crime that'll send me to the slammer. Near the end I'm looking at how some of the prisons are and I was brought back to my 16 months in college for culinary management. Same idea too. Barring restrictions not brought up the biggest difference is going at your own pace for rehab and education (barring projects) at the college. Hard for me not to bring those correlations. Great vid by the way. Side note: been re-visiting some of the cooking vids and I'm wondering if you considered investing in a whetstone for the kitchen? It's basically a multi-grit abrasive for your knives. Then again this is coming from someone with a 1000 grit one.

Love the videos Larry. Keep em coming. I definitely don't believe the incarcerated deserve to live in hell or be mistreated. their time is their punishment. the prison's shouldnt be there to make it more difficult. however i don't believe it should ever be "upscale" or "inviting". I've worked in corrections for over a decade now in the Chicago area. these young "kids" coming in need a wake up call.

@LarryLawton I’m from Austria and you have to say that Leoben is just for pre-trial detention and sentences up to a maximum of 18months, believe me our real prisons are way worse besides having a tv you’re still in a cell with 1-7 other persons. Most of the time if we say you’re in a cell for max. 4 persons you’re in there with 5 people, you can apply that to all “cell-classes” 😅 the sanitation system is also most of the time really old and mold is nearly everywhere in the older Austrian prisons so I just wanted to say Leoben is truly an exception from the other prisons here and I would say if you’re not directly from Leoben or The Steiermark where Leoben is located u got zero chance to land there because if you’re having “only up to 18months” u stay in your hometurf federal state. Don’t know why but I just wanted to state some facts about our prison system please excuse me 😂
