Ex-Google CEO WARNS: "China Far Ahead In AI"

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt said, at a Harvard Institute of Politics forum recently, that the United States is falling behind China in the race to develop more powerful artificial intelligence.
During the event, Schmidt said that in addition to having access to more talented engineers, powerful processing chips, and large data sources like the U.S., China also benefits from having more electrical power to sustain the training and development of the AI models.

Many people may not be aware that Schmidt has incredible academic credentials. He is a committed intellectual who happened to make it big in biz.

The title doesn’t match Schmidt’s prognostication (and is clickbait). Schmidt literally says that Chinese models are “within a year” behind US models (which is too close for comfort unless there are other underlying constraints on what China may do with the technology.) My concerns aren’t specific to China; I’m not convinced that Larry Page’s interests are perfectly aligned with mine, either. Because technological progress seems inexorable, we’d better decide in advance what science fiction future we want to live in. I’d prefer Star Trek to Brave New World/1984.
