SUCH a brilliant tension reliever and it’s also, slyly, a very deciding point in the film. This is the point of the movie where Caleb makes up his mind and firmly chooses to side with Ava. Seeing Nathan sporadically cut up the dance floor unnerves Caleb, and makes him believe that Nathan is nothing more than an egotistical, narcissistic psychopath. BRILLIANT!

This character, the way she dances in this--she looks like and reminds me so much of my younger daughter it's insane. She was killed in 2018, and every time I want a smile, I turn to this scene. Sure, everyone else loves it for obvious reasons but I love it for so much more. If I ever make a movie about my life, I want this girl or Awkwafina to play my daughter.

One of the most unpredictable and unexpected scenes in a movie I've ever observed. The only scene I can think of that matches how unpredictable this scene was, is in Reservoir Dogs - where something happens to Mr. Blonde when he's about to burn the cop alive. That's what's great about Ex-Machina, it was extremely unpredictable.

CBebop 4Ever there was something calming yet also creepy about this...because we knew what kyoko was and had established or guessed what his "fetish" is. It sort of implies his creation of all the robots. It speaks to the fear of amazing and mind blowing creation for "nothing" or predatory needs. It's light hearted but a reminder of his lack of soundness about the line between experiment and connection to humans.

The point of this scene is to show the nature of artificial intelligence. Kiyoko, a robot, is able to kill it on the dance floor, something that not even all humans can do. Yet, she can't even exhibit any sort of emotion, which is something that literally all humans do. The scene displays this in a sort of darkly humorous irony. This is also called Moravec's Paradox, look into it's really interesting.
@subtenk07 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really have to depict that, in fact it could be depicting emotion actually. humans don't always have certain facial expressions when dancing. in fact u can look up a lot of videos and people got a stern or neutral look, so nice theory but yea the ai shows emotion as u can see in the movie at least from ava

I think the real point of this scene is that Oscar Isaac can tear up the fucking dance floor dude check it out
@whitetuxmafiaandfilms50427 жыл бұрын
This breaks down when you resize that even fucking programmed AI can not live up to Oscar Isac's dance moves
@subtenk07 жыл бұрын
WhiteTuxMafiaAndFilms I dont think so, she had good smooth moves. there is not focus on their facial expressions but oscar has bigger facial feature with are more noticible.... the lady is frikken asian and has small facial features. The focus is on both of them dancing. Now oscar does have more noticeable ligament movements when it comes to his feet and hands. But you can say that this AI couldnt step it up. Example: people doing old school 3 step robot vs someone doing crazy liquid like dubstep dancing. You gonna say yea the old school robot dancer is AI but in reality its human and sucks at dancing OR it was literally not trying to do anything fancier...... Next time you see someone in a club or anywhere 'dancind' how you know they are just goofing off with their friends when you are outside their circle? same point
@kingxerocole46167 жыл бұрын
No, the point of this scene is to show that Nathan has choreographed a dance with his robot because he's lonely and losing his mind. He won't listen to Caleb, who's trying to make sense of Nathan's work. This is when Caleb realizes he might not be able to trust Nathan because he's tearing up the fucking dance floor dude check it out

Oscar Isaac is the real star in this flick, he nailed the part, a creator, a god, who makes decisions affecting the emotions, the happiness, the sadness, the very life of his creation- smart, genius, cruel, but as often is the case with creators his creation turns against him-wow:)

There are so many nuances to what they're doing. This is all very sophisticated. Oscar, in addition to dancing, he still needs to incorporate drunkenness and intensity into his moves. While Sonoya needs, while she seems human enough, to make her moves more 'clean' and a little less expressive than his. That's great acting.

Years ago, I remember learning about the "palette cleanser" scene in my film & theater history classes at Emerson (I forget the German terminology). Not long after, Ex Machina was screened at the college before its official release. I was taking notes for an extra credit assignment when this scene came on. I immediately knew what it was, that by design, it would become a memorable talking point from the film, and that everything that followed in the narrative was going to be intense. Garland knows his stuff.
