Would you like to know how an Ex-McKinsey consultant creates a slide presentation? In this video, the former McKinsey consultant Heinrich creates a slide presentation with you. I will show you step by step how I create a slide deck and my underlying thought process, based on a real world business example. Creating business presentations is an essential consulting skill. Large management consulting firms like MBB consulting - that is McKinsey, BCG and Bain - spend a lot of time using PowerPoint. Slide Writing, the techniques of creating slide decks and slide presentations, is key to become a successful consultant. I show you how a consultant creates a slide presentation with PowerPoint tips and keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks for sharing an informative video. Here are my learnings : 1. Think of PPT as a table, rows and columns 2. Allign all objects and text box with summary line, nothing goes beyond summary line 3. While using multiple objects, makes sure to use same pattern in all slides 4. Dont use cloth line, compile long bullets into structure 5. All charts should have same length and width

Looks like the slide presentation of a consulting firm is made with a printed form in mind. So many information gets compacted into a slide for later reading. Tiny fonts, bullet points, pictures and graphs seem to be the norm. I've always been exposed to the new start-up style PowerPoint slides with aesthetically pleasing illustration, big fonts, bright pastel colours. I thought the presentation slides in consulting firms might follow the start-up design because it's the trendy and hip thing right now. Turns out I was wrong.

Hi Christian, thanks for your comment, great observation. Indeed, many business presentations in this environment are never actually getting presented but often just send around as documents or printed out for a meeting. Therefore what you are saying is very much correct. Best! Heinrich

Thanks. I'd like to compare this to the recommendations given by Patrick Winston (MIT) in his talk "How To Speak" (also on KZbin). Based on this, Mr. Winston would probably criticize that most slides here are too busy and the fonts too small. But this only applies if the slides are indeed used for a talk I guess. For LaTeX beamer users, another great guide I would recommend are the guidelines in the beamer user guide (texdoc -s beamer, or on the web on CTAN).

Fantastic video! I do think you might have downplayed the role think-cell and proprietary add-ins have in the consultant day to day workflow in getting that consistent polish in a productive way. I have seen a friend use a prop add-in and the difference in speed and consistency (and ultimately productivity) was significant thanks to the add-in. I was even told that a lot of consultants find the quality of their slides drop after leaving their firms because they don't have the add-ins anymore. What's your point of view on this?
@FirmLearning
@FirmLearning 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anas, agree that think-cell is a huge help and I indeed love working with it :) Do not really use other plugins though. Creating great slides might take you a bit longer without think-cell but it is not impossible. Best, Heinrich

This is a great video. You spoke a lot about aligning elements on a slide. What elements do you look to align between slides? It looks like the placement of the action title and the vertical margins of the slide are consistent. Do you expect the top or bottom of the content area to be consistent between slides, or is it okay for those elements to change from slide to slide?
@FirmLearning
@FirmLearning 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes indeed. Top and bottom does not always need to be the exact same position, though usually you want to make sure that the bottom part does not go beyond where the footnote starts. Best! Heinrich

Awesome video!, Learnt a lot! thanks. Can you tell us which font you use mostly for client presentations?

Hi Rishabh, usually there will be a client styleguide and you will use their font. Though personally I very much like Arial as a nice, clean, basic Font :) Best! Heinrich

Hi Heinrich, A nice addition to your unique course. Are you restricted later to show in a similar way i.e. via an example: 1) how you frame/write your content to influence listeners? 2) how you deliver the presentations to influence listeners (online presentation vs face to face)? The purpose would be to know the tactics you use to maximize impact. Thank you Heinrich, Best

@@FirmLearning That will be amazing! Can't wait to see the result. Also, maybe think about how you can present the "learning" between the different years of consulting. It would be interesting to see how a summer intern would solve a problem, then a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th-year consultant and then how a partner goes on about delivering the same presentation.

The slides look nice AND simple, so great job! How would you recommend suggesting something like this on a team assignment at the university, where everyone wants to make the same cookie-cutter presentations full of nonsensical images, full of text, with boring titles such as "introduction", and other no-do's?

I genuinely feel overwhelmed by the amount of information that is presented on one page. When presenting, do you show from the beginning on the full slide with all of its info, or do you create e.g. multiple slides out of one slide so you can talk about, e.g., each package separately without showing all of them at the same time?

For the first half of the video; my secret recipe to achive the same result with much less clicks is to use tables! Insert a table with no borders, set the margins and sizes evenly, and color the borders you want as seperation lines. Even if you want to use pictures, you can make them hover over the table then group it later.

Crazy helpful video. How do you get the align buttons on the ribbon of powerpoint at the top of the screen so they are always there?
@FirmLearning
@FirmLearning 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew, this is I believe called the Quick Access Bar. It is usually at the very top of the window. In the settings you can customize what elements appear on this bar and you can also change its position from the top to the bottom of the main ribbon. Best! Heinrich
