When I started at Cat in 1988 building TT in East Peoria, the factory space next door-Building X was Assembling these military d7's. The steering clutch brake controls coming from the dash is one of the easy ways to pick out the vintage. Building A, TT, X, W...All the original cat buildings from my youth have been torn down and a Target, Chick-fil-a, and strip mall sit on their foundations. My grandpa worked in building X on the shipping floor before and after world war 2. He signed up for the Marines in WW2 and requested to be in the CB's, but was put in a front line infantry squad on Guam. He later became an operator at the proving ground on Springfield road. Later he (they) moved it to its current site at Spring Creek road. The stories he would tell...

This is how I learned too, except my dad told me what I needed to do and left me alone, to fix itand if I had a problem, he would help me with it, but from the first car /truck/tractor that worked on ,I taught myself and figured out how to fix it all on my own and before it was over I was teaching my dad how to do things and he was a professional world Mechanic pipefitter welder you name it he could do ,it he was the guy that would sit at the kitchen table with the Timex watch and fix the thing to get it accurately on time, so I love this ❤ thanks BigAl California

It's great to see that your son has an interest in the equipment, and is learning how to maintain them. I really respect the way you have the patience to show him how to do it right. The greatest resource this country has, bar none, is our youth. Any and every young person should be encouraged and given sensible choices to train in the 'industrial arts' . Europe is light years ahead of us in this. This rarely happens and so many fall aside never being given an opportunity to develop their special interests, skills and intelligence. The back of my hand to schools who do not offer them a chance to learn and shine IN HIGH SCHOOL. C and C should be recognized for this.

Suggestion- a valuable teaching option is to have your boy use a properly sized torque wrench to get the feel for different size fasteners. All the standard size bolts and nuts on routine fasteners. Correct ratings, then shear points. I learned that the hard way, easy outs are great, but not needing them is much more better. You have to be proud than he is in there learning the trade!

I recall larger companies buying up parts from other companies that went under. I was in the auto parts business they tried to push that auction stuff into the supply line I would send it back . They would cross reference the part number and sell it as their own brand. I have been using Fram filters for 55 years on my cars . My bus company used them we never lost a engine due to a failure
