The 'Noman' and the 'good' ending was amazing and showed the Space Marines more vulnerable side, however the 'Special Ending' seemed extremely accurate for Dark Angles

I personally like to think that the Angel allowed the Deserters daughter to run home, letting the Deserter know that she was safe, before arresting him peacefully. The Deserter would stand trial on The Rock and might be seconded to the Deathwatch as punishment if he isn't just killed then and there by the Interrogators. While in the Deathwatch, the Deserter keeps himself going with the memories of his family. What's more, the Angel that arrested him would obviously give testimony at the Deserters trial. I like to think the Angel said this: Azreal: "And this deserter? You found him where?" Angel: "On an agri-world, Chapter Master." Azreal: "What was he doing?" Angel: "Hiding in a cave, Chapter Master. He hadn't even spoken to another human in years."

Story wise I like the Noman ending, but I think the bad ending is more accurate. The existence of the Fallen is the Dark Angel's greatest secret. Killing the family of a Fallen to ensure that info doesn't leak to some Inquisitor no matter how unlikely. Seems on point for a Dark Angel.

More accurate? Nah. Just full-on, stark-raving grimderp. Also, why would they be scared of that "info" leaking to an Inquisitor? Sure, the Celestial Lions had it rough, but they have Black Templars as homies and there are still some CL alive. As long as just one CL remains, the gene-stock can be remade. And, man... have you read what short-work the Space Wolves made of Inquisitorial forces sent against them? The Ultramarines? Hah! They care even less for the Inquisition's grundling about them. So why would Dark Angels be so scared of the Inquisition?

Good Ending is awesome. I fully understand the Dark Angel's disgust. Like, "Do you think you're special or something? Do you think none of us ever wanted something other than this?" The Deserter does have a point and while I'm glad he gets to be happy with his family, it is ultimately a happiness paid for by the blood of Guardsmen and his own brothers, that good reason or not, he abandoned. Some people could call it out of character for the DA not to just kill him and everyone there, but I think they misunderstand. They seek to make The Fallen Repent because they were genuinely led astray. The hate them, but they pity them as lost brothers who need to have their honor restored before death. But the Deserter knew damn well what he did. This isn't a shameful secret that needs to be purged. Just something better left alone. Killing him or anyone else on the world wouldn't do any good. I think The Deserter just took all that verbal punishment, knowing what he's done is selfish. And it's a good bit of morally grey characterization. A disgraced, shamed Space Marine. And a loving father, husband and hardworking farmer. One in the same. Runner up though, just for sheer dickery, is the "Special Ending." Goddamit DA.

Hell, Space Wolves also visit their families on Fenris. Lukas the Trickster has many children he partially raises when he isn't out fighting for humanity/being an asshole.

Honestly i don t even consider it the good ending. While i don t know that much about how the Dark Angels operate, the fact that he denied the Deserter the Emperors mercy is probably in his book a greater punishment than all the torture he could have done, why grant someone you despise from your very core Mercy and peace in the arms of the Emperor. This speech feels to me the strongest one that could probably turn around the deserter because it puts into perspective his sin and the consequences of his actions. After all even one space marine can t hold off a full blown chaos invasion or ork wargh, especially someone who has no gear and is just doing farmer work. I also like the fact that even though its 40k and morality is.... questionable he still considers it a sin to kill his own brother (that didn t suffer from outside influences like chaos).

They are supposed to protect civvies and prevent Chaotic, hostile xenos, heretic, and demonic forces to kill them, not to kill the civvies themselves. Honestly the first 3 endings all make a lot of sense. Ending 1: Even if he lives he has to live with the guilt of knowing that his brothers and Guardsmen defend his life and happiness and that one dreaded day he will have to put the armor back on and defend his family. Ending 2: As brutal as it is it honestly makes a lot of sense for a space marine of most chapters to do. People don't really realize just how evil a Loyalist space marine can be. Space Marines are supposed to be defenders of humanity, but others do not think as such. Some chapters see humans as inferior and beneath them. Executing the family and then the deserter is on point depending on the chapter. Ending 3: I quite like this one. It's not completely a happy ending, but not a bad one either. The deserter is taken away and the family lives but without him. It feels more Honorable in a way respecting the desperate wishes of the deserter, but still requires him to finish his duty on the day he dies. The forth Ending is just funny and if it would articulated and presented seriously would make a lot of sense and an example of the sheer brutality of certain Loyalist spacemarines.

Loyalist space marines don't have to be good, they are in service of the Emperor to defend His Imperium... So if benevolence is the best way to serve Him they will be benevolent, if curelty is the best way to serve Him, they will be cruel... The first three are totally possible... I see the first one as a fellow battle brother knowing the temptation but resisted it and telling the hard truth of that kind of choice by letting him experience it in due time... The second one is more like a veteran desposing of of a newly (in space marine standard) elevated aspirant who broke his owth to the Emperor in the most vile way possible letting the enemies of mankind florishing while he enjoys himself a peace he can't afford, so he paid it dearly. The third one is a friend bringing back his brother because he knew his feelings but he can't let someone like him go to waste, even if he knows he will lost his friend one day but an astartes is too precious to not be in use to protect mankind.

After all, they're weaker, less educated, shorter-lived, and the Imperium treats the lives of the IG as fodder to soak up bullets so the marines can do what they do. Even if the hunter turns and walks away the life of the deserter will still be irrevocably changed by the events. He walked away alive after an Angel of the Emperor came and pointed a weapon at him, and (depending if the Angel responded to his speech) he revealed himself to be like the Angel and yet abandoned his duty to The God Emperor. His neighbors will look to him more suspiciously if word got out, his wife might trust him less is she didn't know his secret prior to their relationship, and God Emperor help what his child must be thinking about right now.

And if the Space Marine has it right then whatever family he saddled up with handles anything involving going to other communities while he stays at home as a farmer/guard. In my mind the Deserter goes with the Angel and after centuries of service the Deserter and the Angel find themselves back at the world, at the same farm they met. After an epic last stand the Deserter and Angel lie dying in the ruins of the Deserter’s old home. The Angel says his penance is finally over. I can see characters moving in the TTS style in the fourth ending.

I liked the "noman" ending the best because, for me, it felt more inline to what Warhammer 40k is lore wise and how, personally, I would imagine a confrontation like this would go down based on everything I've read/know about the setting. It's a complex world over all. For me, there's no really good nor bad people. There were characters that did truly heroic things, some very dumb things and others really horrific things. But in between there are lots of shades of grey. As one goes through the stories, they make you think more about those grey areas what you would do int a similar situations. And the "special" ending......well, we needed a little levity around here. Some of these things get pretty damn heavy.

I think the "Noman" Ending has it. As much as I want the Good ending and I think the bad ending is the most likely in this dark and twisted universe the "Noman ending is just right. In a world as bleak as 40k Noman is positively wholesome. Just sucks that they will probably turn him into a servitor. Cant exactly let him run around thinking about freedom now can we?

I think the good ending would be traditional space marines would react, Noman (which is my favorite) how salamanders (which what looks like on the art), would react. And I think the dark and special endings are definitely how the dark angels would react.

Quite honestly, I always find somewhat annoying that every Astartes that abandons his duty immediately falls to Chaos. I'd actually respect them a lot more if they did like this guy, i.e. carve a life for themselves in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, or even be space pirates or become mercenaries for the unscrupulous yet uncorrupted. Better be an irresponsible, unfaithful coward than become a baby eating monster.

The Noman Ending is honestly the best IMO. The bad ending is just as good. What I like about both of them is that the Dark Angel actually makes some decent points on the hypocrisy of the deserter's choice. You could honestly see where the Space Marine is coming from.

I could honestly see a similar situation with an Astartes who was the sole survivor of a failed landing or an escape from a dying void vessel. Crippled by Astartes standards and stuck on a fuedal planet with nothing but his bolt pistol and broken power armor. Does what he can to honor his oath to the Emperor by defending the populace from monstrous native creatures. Has been trying to contact his chapter with a satellite jerryrigged from the remnants of whatever vehicle he arrived in and after hundreds of years finally gets a response. Better endings involve a response from loyal Imperial entites. Bad endings are basically everyone else AND a number of loyal Imperial entities.

3rd ending is arguably the best. Yes he's forced to give up the life he wants but, perhaps its not so bad. He gets to fight with the knowledge he's not doing it just because that's what he's meant to do, or because the chapter master said so, or because the Emperor wills it, but because he has a legitimate reason to do so. Bittersweet indeed.
