I live here and i wouldn't recommend it - if you come across the orthodox, you'll be disappointed, because they're pretty vile... They usually keep to their zones and are a minority, so you probably won't tho. What you WILL come across for certain meanwhile is the extreme prices, bad food quality, the really hot unpleasant weather with high humidity, outside some of winter, and the near complete lack of nature (which considering i'm not a native bothers me a LOT), but i guess if you're a fan of rocky, desert and near desert landscapes, it won't bother you (i know such people exist, at least from what they claim). The dropping of nuclear bombs in particular were purely political and nothing to do with winning the war. Having said that, there is an argument to be made that while the allied bombing campaigns of civilian targets in Germany and Japan were inhuman - they were far more proportional than what is happening in Gaza today. Whatever you say about Hamas, they haven't unleashed a world war and killed millions of people.

I agree. He's a good guy. His anger at Islam is principled and just. I would only say that he forgets that large and old religions are always internally diverse. I think it would help the Muslim world finally learn how to be modern if they were made aware not only of the criticisms of Islam but also the fact that some of the smaller Islamic sects are far less problematic. The Ibadi, Ahmadiyya, Ismailis in particular - but even the B'hai who were once Shia and then saw a better way. I speak from experience as an ex-Christian atheist. Christianity was once as virulent as Islam is now - as Jewish history can attest. I have found that Christians who are still in some of the most poisonous denominations (the ones who still scapegoat homosexuals and deny science) are often looking for a way out but simply won't accept criticism from atheists. But they DO listen to less radical Christians in the softer sects. I would rather they leave completely, obviously; but people have all kinds of emotional attachments to religion. So, those "progressive" and "mainline" denominations can have them! Islam really could benefit from something similar. Why don't we hear more from these smaller, kinder sects? Why aren't they recognized more?
