You can substite the words for pretty much anything with a format of saying "a few X short of a Y" where Y is a complete set of something that can technically work without all the required X, but poorly.

But sadly, he'll lose contact with OP, and his kid will never get to know her grandfather; the only family the son and his kid will have in Illinois is each other. Plus, instead of ever finding new love, just like OP had, the son will need to steer clear of potential new partners, be super-vigilant with whom he trusts, and whom he lets get close, concentrate on getting therapy for himself, raising his kid, being there for her, and creating a stable and safe home environment for her as a good single dad.⚠️
