I have had this problem in the past. Nothing to do with an eating disorder just social anxiety. It sucked. I came up with all kinds of excuses. I also had a way of eating by drinking lots of water to slide things down easier and I took very small bites of food. People would comment I ate like a bird. She could’ve said she was so nervous she felt a bit nauseated or something. She def made it really awkward. If it’s due to anxiety or even an eating disorder I feel bad for her.

@@jolouis100 Yeah, one of my friends has that too, and her relationship with food is otherwise completely healthy, she simply can't bring herself to eat in certain settings. She's worked at the same place for 6 years, loves her co-workers, but still can't eat lunch with them or even at her desk while someone else is there. Luckily, she can eat in front of me and our other friends because we all love good food and I'm glad we can enjoy it together and that she considers me a close enough friend to feel comfortable eating around me.

If she can't even make sure she knows what country the fiance is from, how serious is she in making she feel comfortable half a world away from everything she knows. We Americans just take for granted other cultures will just pick up on our traditions and customs like they been doing it for years. If it's true anxiety, give her time to just meet the family, sit outside the pool and enjoy the outside. Sara Evans no it’s a eating disorder. I had it for 3 years and was diagnosed with severe social anxiety disorder. My eating disorder made it where I wouldn’t eat in front of anyone and if I did I felt like I was constantly judge so I would just drink water or eat a bit of chips so no one would wonder why I was eating. Even just eating that amount made me feel awful about my self and made me want to cry when anyone asked me why I wasn’t eating a lot. So kids even talked about it and made fun of me for it.

Traveling to other countries, I ate lots of foods I didn't like because I knew someone took the time and expense to prepare it for me. No one expects you to "stuff your face", but you should eat something and not turn your nose up at the effort people put in on your behalf. Regardless of your reason for refusing to eat, it's still disrespectful and will be viewed as ungrateful. I'd say, anyone who will not eat when others can see them, definitely needs treatment to resolve the issue.

My male cousin doesn't eat infront of any of us family. Even christmas dinner he wouldn't ever eat even one bite. No one bugged him about it. We are now in late 30s early 40s and he just started eating normally with everyone at dinner couple years ago. Not one of us 30 family members at the dinner table for holidays ever said a word about it. We never said a word about how shocked we all were, and happy to see him one day just start piling food on his plate and eat like everyone else. He never has had eating disorders or thin build, no problems with food. He said one day when he was ready to everyone before we ate that he was so happy he was excepted and not made fun of or judged for eating in private. He also said the reason he now can eat with everyone is he now realizes everyone makes noise when they chew food, crunching sounds. So for whatever reason that was his issue with eating infront of people. He didn't want people to hear him chewing. He always ate, just sat at the table for dinner drinking tea, but eat in a bedroom alone after everyone was finished. It didn't bother any of us, his family, we never embarrassed him for his insecurities. We all have our own issues to overcome. He overcame his when he was ready. I just want to share his story to hopefully help another family understand it's ok to have someone with insecurities that are more noticeable then others. And please try to remember that family should be everyone's safe space. There isn't much worse then being judged by the very ones who are supposed to love use and except us for who we are.

I had that issue as a kid. It went somewhere from around 10 to 17 years old. You will probably get over it. But in the mean time dont let in ruin your experiences going out. My trick to getting through it was to eat in the corner of restaurants with my back facing everyone. I still went out because I was worried my little issue would turn to something bigger like agoraphobia if I didnt push myself through it. And like the other commenter said, dont care what other people think. I tell myself now that if I had cared little less, I would have lived a lot more. I deff live a lot more now. 🙂

She is not genuinely concerned about him at all. She is concerned that having a younger and more beautiful woman in his life will threaten to extent to which she can control her ex-husband. Look at the nonsense about her insisting that she has to vet the fiancee before she will let the boys be around her. the Ex makes like it is to protect them but that is total BS. She is an abusive and manipulative person and she uses his kids to control him and she knows that if his new wife gets pregnant he will love those kids too and it will weaken her ability to control him. I am married to a beautiful Filipina and we are in the midst of the immigration process now and I have already warned her that she is going to get some hate once she is here in the US, from women that are threatened by the ability of American men to pursue better options in other places when looking for a life partner.

I can kind of relate to her... in the aspect that I also lowkey feel rude or disrespectful taking someone’s food aswell as sometimes eating in front of others. I wouldn’t of done what she had done when people obviously prepare food for you. But at family gathers and even just hanging out with friends.. it can be hard (not doing it on purpose I just feel bad lol) I’ve gotten better however ~ grew out of it ish

I get her.. First time I went on a date with my boyfriend I was so nervous I couldn't chew properly without being awkward, it was good food at my fav restaurant I even missed my mouth a couple of times.. That was the first time I forced myself to eat with a stranger then.. Even in the comfort of my own home I'd be shy eating food if we have guests, not only dining together but sharing snacks too, its just physically hard and makes me emotionally panicky.. The first time I ate dinner at my boyfriends house was also nerve wrecking although it was nice, dining extremely made me uncomfortable, I liked the food, I wanted to eat more or look up at the table atleast while the others we're eating, I tried my best to hide it and was so worried they'd think I'm rude or manner less.. It's not entirely self explainable for me, I don't think his family was rude I get in awe seeing ppl eating comfortably, I try to get better and I completely understand her situation

Family should be more sensative to eating disorders. I used to have one and I could not eat infront of people except those I really trusted and new well. It was a phobia and it's not possible to just "make yourself eat" I'm so glad now I can eat infront of anyone and am healthy with my food but this was not always the case. People, if someone acts like this please do not draw attention or bully them about it, or be offended. Just think that there may be a little more going on and be sensative and kind to that. The girl was absolutely panicking and the family were making it 100x worse which actually has a really bad impact on an already warped mind to food and makes their feelings about it and themselves 100x worse.

It is not a custom of the country to do so in fact that was considered rude or ungrateful, it's just the girl's personal thing. She should just tell them what was wrong why she couldn't eat instead of just sitting there filling the air with awkwardness.

I'm Russian. And it would be weird if a fiance refused to eat the mothers cooking. So yeah it's definitely the girls personal reason. Either she is really just super shy or maybe doesn't trust the family. I mean are you going to trust the people who think you are a gold digger who has come to ruin your family and get a visa.
