Physical Chemistry lecture that reviews exact and inexact differentials. The definition of what makes a differential exact is given as well as the criteria to test for exactness. The ideal gas law is used as an application to test exactness.

My physical chemistry teacher told us to remember what these two terms meant without any explaination! You're heaven-sent! Thank YOU.

Very nice video, I would really appreciated and example of an inexact differential, given that we are already used to seeing exact differentials.

Can you explain to me why at 0:19 you write a standard "d"? But at 3:15 you use another symbol. Is there a reason for this? I've learned to guess when I should use them or not, but I hate that I have no basis for understanding why the symbols are different. Plus I don't even know how that symbol is called, it's hard to google it. Delta perhaps?

Excellent question Alfonso, the "d" is used to denote a derivative of a function of a single variable while the other symbol (known as the "partial symbol") is used for partial derivatives, or derivatives of functions of multiple variables. Basically: d -> function of one variable partial -> function of two or more variables I try to be consistent with this throughout the lectures on this channel but I think all professors sometimes screw this up sometimes when teaching. Hope that helps!
