Just like a stool antigen test, the problem with breath tests is patients have to come off of antacids for 2 weeks prior to taking. If they don’t, it’s false negative all the way. New molecular stool tests are the way to go.

Ok I just went to a lab for the breath test and they told me to come back the next day because I had a small sip of water like half an hour before bc it’s so hot out. I asked them about the antacids thing and they said it’s not a concern. So a tiny sip of water will effect it but taking pepto a couple times within the last week and omeprazole doesn’t? Like how does that make sense? Now I’m annoyed bc I have a feeling the test will be negative regardless. I want to bypass it and just go for an endoscopy to get a definite answer for what’s going on rather than wasting time, money, gas, etc for a test that will most likely be tainted

@@kierasaurusfrost yeah pepto bismuth and medications like Prilosec and nexium will affect the results. No eating or drinking, or anything in the mouth like smoking or gum for at least 1 hour prior. Usually if a patient has something to drink within the last 30 minutes, I at least ask if they would like the wait 30 minutes before performing the test. But yeah a negative could easily be a false negative which is why I don't like the breath test in general. If you get a positive result, you can trust that result. If you get a negative, there is always the chance that it cannot be trusted. There are all sorts of reasons like miscommunication or misunderstanding about the questions being asked of the patient. Or sometimes language barrier. Or patient just doesn't answer the questions accurately because they don't want to return. Bags can be deflated during transit. There are too many possibilities. It's such a sensitive test for that reason. I don't understand why providers don't use the stool test, as that is the test that is done to confirm negative breath test results anyway. If that happens to you and you get a negative, ask to do the stool test as it's not as sensitive to outside factors like the breath test is. It even says right in the packet of the breath test box to confirm negative results with a stool antigen test. Which defeats the purpose. Just skip straight to the accurate one.

Only that the breath test can easily miss the infection. The best noninvasive test is a stool test for H. Pylori - either an antigen or a PCR test.

@@ExtaTer i tested it with antigen (blood) and it came out negative, but the doctors told me that the breath test is more accurate than the stool test because it tells you the intensity of the bacteria, but the stool test only says positive or negative. The intensity is also very important to know. mine is 88.0 so its not alot
