I had a similar experience, a driver (who ended up in an accident later and was drunk) went 45 in a residential area, and ran a stop sign, and I failed because I didn't yield and the examiner had to tell me to stop. It happens sometimes and it's dumb. Especially since the test is for your driving, not others.

The service van incident, I feel, only reinforces the fact that when you drive, you must be alert AT ALL TIMES to what other people all around you are doing, and to expect the unexpected. When I learned how to drive, my dad told me that you need to assume that everyone else on the road is a bad driver. Perhaps the student in this video can use the service van incident as a lesson that you should never assume that everyone is driving correctly. After all, defensive driving means you allow for the possibility that someone will make a bad maneuver, whether accidentally or intentionally, and you act accordingly.

Absolutely! You can never be too observant while on the road, especially if you're a new driver. Even someone who has experience should not slack. You can be the safest driver and still get yourself in a crash or recieve a hefty ticket, just because of one moment of misjudgement.

I wish they would make right on red lights illegal, especially at busy intersections like this one. The driving school I used (in CA) would tell students they could wait out the red light to turn right on the driving test. (For good reason. There are many things to look out for and you can run over a pedestrian). But then a particular examiner started failing students who didn’t attempt to turn right on red, which was unfair. But I wonder, well, what if in order to get a clear view of traffic from the left, you have to inch out and be over the crosswalk for a some time to make the attempt to turn right? Then you might fail for that reason. It’s unfair to say they want students to follow 2 different standards. The DMV test should be more clear about this.

Just passed my drivers test, used a black 2014 ford mustang that I just purchased for the test, the instructor at the end told me that he now wishes i took him on a long stretch of road to see how fast my car goes. I failed twice on the same instructor and I remembered her very well cause how she got her left arm fully tattooed. The first fail she gave me was cause of how slow i was going (below 15mph in a 25 mph road), I didn't really give much argument cause it was my first test and I think she was right (she failed me after the test had only started for merely 2 minutes). But the 2nd time I met her I was ready, during the first 2 minutes of the test, this time I concentrated on the speed I was driving (for real I glance at the speed diameter every 3 seconds). But after the first right turn out of the DMV parking lot, in the corner of my eyes, I can already saw her begin writing down my faults. Her action got me even more concentrated on keeping my speed at exactly 20mph always during the 25mph limit local roads. But each time I changed roads she kept on writing down faults and exactly 2 minutes after the test started she already had me back in the DMV parking lot. And guess what ? She failed me solely on the faults that I was driving "below 15mph" on a 25mph road... That's why I know this was a circus all along. I put up the arguments with her but there I got no proof I was at the speed limit cause the law forbid you to have any recording types during the test. And so the Instructor's word is the bible they say. I went into the DMV and demand justice but again... DMV employees don't give 2 shjts about you cause they protects their own coworkers. And that's why I believe that Behind the Wheel test is 90% luck, 10% skill.

The student should’ve waited for all the cars turning left to pass before turning right. That’s justifiable why it’s a critical error. The cars turning left can go into any of those 3 lanes, if they decided to go to the right lane, they would’ve crashed into the student.

Eh the law states though that the cars turning left are not entitled to all three lanes, they can only turn into them if it safe for them to do so. It is clear they worded it like this so that cars wanting to turn right on the red can do so legally even if there are cars turning with you.

I would’ve waited too. I see it as the protected left turners have the right of way. They have the green arrow. She can theoretically turn right , but she still has a red light. But I wouldn’t have blamed her for what that other car/van rudely did. The examiner was unfair.

I enjoy these videos even though I already have my license here in NJ. When I took my exam I think the examiner was just really patient. I accidentally put the car in neutral when trying to reverse into my parallel park and she said “can you think of any reason why we may not be moving.” My driving instructor says I went up on the curb when he was watching, but I don’t recall ever going up on the curb lol. Then I was a little over the speed limit while turning a curve and she just told me to “slow down.” She wasn’t very talkative and I was sure I messed up enough to fail, but ultimately she passed me on the first try. All of this to say, it’s just sometimes on the examiners to assess whether they believe you’re a confident enough driver despite your mistakes or when things like what happened in this video happen on your test. Based on other stories I’ve heard about people making mistakes on their road test, I’ve noticed that the examiners tend to have a lot of discretion. Some just end up being more lenient than others. The best thing you can do is just be confident and try not to let the mistakes get to you in the middle of the test.

At 70+ and after my very first accident (And NEVER had a ticket, but it was my fault), my license was suspended. I was given a litany of hoops to do to gett it back. I was told by the DMV officer in charge of my case I would NOT pass because I've been driving since I was 16 and I've picked up bad habits and rules have changed. The instructor was correct. It was a critical error. You can turn right at a red light as long as there’s no posted no turn on red. But as you can see she failed to yield to the on coming traffic turning left which had the green arrow at the light.

Yup. It's pretty obvious on this one. Not sure why the uploader thinks the instructor was wrong. Just by looking at the traffic lights you can tell it's an intersection with those left turn arrows; just by looking at the flow of oncoming cars they had a green light, thus the student had to stay put until clear.

In Oregon it’s legal also to turn right on red. But honestly I always say when in doubt wait it out. I usually wait until the light turns green rather be safe than assume there’s no oncoming traffic.

Then, if you comply, and something like this happens, they will fail you. It is a catch-22 lol, but probably you also got lucky. If an examiner is fed up with that particular street light and they are willing to tell you to do something like that, they have already approved of you on their mind. This system has failed. A new one is needed through AI and automation.

This one is pretty obvious that the examiner was right. Oncoming traffic had a green left turn arrow. Doesn't matter if the driver decided to change lane at the last moment getting closer to the student. In a right turn on red, one should only proceed to turn when it's clear. Even if a crazy drivers turns left on a red light, as long as you have a red light on your side, you don't have the right of way so you have to wait until traffic is clear.

The driver should wait until the car had went, when you turn right on a red regardless of the lane of the other driver you shouldn’t be parallel with them. Critical error. Instant fail. It was justified.

@@yosifmohsen6336 As long as you have a red light, you only make a right turn when it's safe. You see cars moving in you direction, you yield because you don't have the right of way. The only exception would be if the light is red but you have a small right turn green arrow.

@@rez2593 You don’t need a professional to train you. As long as the person with you has experience of driving for more than 2 years, they can teach you. So any family member or friend works. I hired an independent instructor and he taught me 2 days a week, sometimes I skip certain weeks bc I have exams. Find whatever works for you.

You're good man, don't stress about it. I took was honestly getting more and more nervous by each day. I literally went to Universal Studios the day before my test and I had my test the next morning lol. Just remember always use SMOG and honestly you'll be more than fine to pass your test and you seem to have a lot of time to practice before your big day. Good luck man! I know this is kind of late comment, but I do not believe the vehicle white vehicle(if im seeing it right) it the vehicle that was flying by. The vehicle that swings the turn wide is a chevy equinox. The service van is a ford transit connect. They both happen to be white, but the vehicle that is first seen turning does not have the roof rack that the van does.

In California it's prohibited to record during a driving test, meaning the examiner's words are the bible and you can't do jack even if they falsely accused you of something that don't even existed. So WHEN can you turn right on red, given that there are cars getting ready to turn left just across the road? Should you try to turn before they begin to move, or let them turn left first? Rules in the DMV book say nothing about it, and it's kinda confusing.....

You could get a different answer depending on who you ask, but you always have to play it safe when there are people across from you. If you ask me, you should wait for them to turn. Always pay attention to oncoming traffic, and as long as absolutely nothing is coming, you can turn right, considering there are no signs stating otherwise.

I failed my driving test for the second time today. I was disqualified for a critical error. I was supposed to take a right turn at the traffic light. I didn’t realize until I was done with the test that I did a rolling stop while turning right. I honestly forgot to stop behind the line, but I guess in my head even with all of the cars that were coming behind me, I was going to accidentally cause a car crash. I always fail to remember sometimes that as long as I have my turn signals on, 99 percent of cars will know what I’m trying to do and either wait for me to finish what I’m doing, or try and pass me on the side. Once I had done the rolling stop and turned right, there was two lanes; one going to the left and another that was to the right. I blanked out at the wrong moment and stayed on the left after she told me to stay on the right lane. My anxiety was on full display today. The DMV worker was a much older lady and told me to calm down and told me to just relax. I know they’re not all that nice, but she gave me encouragement to not give up until I get my license no matter how many times it may take me to pass.

One of RTS videos mentioned making sure your tires are facing straight and don't get too close to the curb. I was sure I would hit the curb, but when he said pull over (I knew what was coming) I gave myself about 3' and straightened my wheels. Easy breezy.

That BMW driver overreacted just a bit with the horn, should the student have waited no, but the BMW could have lightly tapped the horn instead of LAYING on it. And she should not have had the first major error counted against her

I failed 2 times But the second one i had to do a turn left it was not arrow, the light was red and then I waited the light was green and then I left the cars pass and then I turn left, but I thought I did a mistake and I had to turn right and turn left again boy there was a stop and you know there are two white lines unfortunately I passed a little bit the first one! And my examiner yelled me! STOP! What are you doing! Go back! Go back! My nervous got worse! And asked her turn left? She said yes And then I had to turn right But she told me change line and turn right at the same time! I didn’t get any time! The turn right was near! And I did a fast move! She said so many lies I don’t know if I can complain, Because yes I did mistake but it is her word against my word. Maybe was racism I don’t know she was a black woman! Poor officiation from examiner’s parts need to stop. I wish we were allowed to contact DMV to dispute failing scores because of some examiner who likes failing people for no reason. If students do their job properly, they will have license. If they don’t they will have luck for rescheduling next test. Examiner for my opinion are just referee, they can poor officiates sometimes, and does not pay much attention to if student getting job done. You don’t have to be perfect driver to have driver license. You just have to show proficiency whether or not you are able to perform necessary maneuver safely and efficiently.

I thought you are not allowed to turn right at the red light unless a sign at the traffic light allows you. I don't know the exact situation in the United States (obviously this is in the US) but when there is "equal" oncoming traffic wanting to go to the left and you yourself want to go to the right, ending up in the same street, you have priority and the other traffic must wait. Following the explanation, the student didn't make an error if he/she is allowed to turn right at red light. Both the student and the other car can pick the lane if there was one lane for the student to turn right and one lane for the other driver to turn left. 6:40-6:47 There was a car behind her. When she wanted to go to the left, where exactly was that car? Really behind her? Left behind or right behind her?

@@malia750 Aha. In the Netherlands it is the other way around. I am in Germany now, and there is sometimes an extra traffic light. If the main light is red, you must stop. If, next to the red light, there is a green arrow light, you are allowed to turn left. The rest of the traffic must stop, unless they also want to turn right.
