Right, I'm a Filipino and I love Balut. And this is how you eat it: 1. Crack the egg specifically at the less pointy side of the egg. 2. Peel off the cracked shells to expose the thin membrane covering the egg. 3. Take that membrane out and dispose. You'll see that it has soup inside. 4. Sprinkle some salt or vinegar and then consume the soup. It is very tasty. 5. Now peel half of the balut to expose the yolk and the duck. 6. Douse the egg with vinegar and eat it whole. You don't need to take the duck apart cause that is just gross. To describe the taste, it tastes like hard boiled eggs with duck broth.

im born and raised in the Philippines and I eat balut. it is one of my favorite treats. the balut egg was born out of necessity, the primary reason is the iron in the black part, the calcium of the white part and the magnesium of the yellow part. You need to eat it with salt and slurp the egg's juices.

*So much judgement/criticism on other country's food traditions in the comment section :(* I never tried Balut and probably never will but I'm not going to sit behind my computer screen and tell others that it's wrong to eat it because it's a duck embryo. I don't care if you are vegetarian, vegan, or a meat eater. Everyone has the right to their own food/ lifestyle decision without others trying to impose theirs on them.

Omg the mistake is u never reboil the balut! That second day egg is the worse of all. In Vietnam you always eat it fresh, as like buy it uncook, then boil it and consume right away. I dont enjoy it, but the proper way to eat is to open one end of the egg, use a small spoon to scoop out a little bit, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and eat it. It is best to eat it with Viet tarragon called "rau dam". That is an herb, that has a slightly spicy taste. That how it counteract the taste of the balut. You want to choose small egg, a pro eater would know by just looking at the shell and its size. Smaller means less developed embryo. However, I might be wrong but from what I remember, ppl said these eggs cannot further developed. In Vietnamese, it means mistaken duck egg. It is the street food for alcoholic. They eat this while drinking their beer. Popular for that. I live the yolk bc it is edible n better than regular yolk. The white is too hard to eat. I no longer can eat the bird, it scare me when I was younger. The egg was too big, I saw the entire body. Too afraid!

again, the size of the egg doesn't affect the size of the embryos. It's all about the days you let it develop/hatch before cooking it.

Don't worry about hurting Filipino sensibilities when referring to the Balut as gross. Many Filipinos consider balut also disgusting, but it is indeed a delicacy in the Philippines. I personally don't like eating it, except probably for the yellow part and also the broth (and the chewy white part). But the duck part genuinely scares me!

Here in the Philippines balut is a very popular delicacy it is sold by a vendor on the street with a basket shouting "balut" in the middle of the night it is seldomly sold in the morning. It is best eaten while still hot if it is not hot anymore you can boil or steam it. And EVERYTHING IN IT IS EDIBLE you can add salt or vinegar and the thing they did wrong is they separated it you will really get disgusted if you separate it hahaha. I started eating balut at a really young age since we live near the "Balut Capital of the Philippines" and for those who say eating balut is cruel, no its not these duck eggs won't be fully developing anymore, what they do is they would put the egg near a light and see the shadow of the embryo now they will separate the fertilized and unfertilized egg that will be turned to balut since they're dead anyways they will not be turned to waste 😃

It's interesting how they were completely grossed out at the concept of eating balut, but somehow eating all the other birds was acceptable. Those birds felt pain too! Yes, they weren't boiled alive, but they were most likely slaughtered by having their throats slit. This technique is not always effective. If the throat is slit improperly, the windpipe is cut and not the jugular vein, and the bird chokes to death instead of passing out immediately from blood loss. Sometimes the cut is not deep enough and they are still awake when they are dipped in hot water to loosen their feathers... Is this any less horrifying than an embryo being boiled?

***** You said that animals have no soul. Fine, I'm not disagreeing with that. However, you seem to be implying that because they have no soul, it is alright for them to suffer. Is it right for a human with a soul to inflict suffering on others, even if they do not have a soul? If you saw someone kick a puppy, would you not care simply because that puppy has no soul? And since they "don't go to heaven" and do not have a glorious afterlife, don't you think that it is our responsibility to make sure that this life is as pleasurable as possible for them? I feel that suffering should be eliminated where ever possible.
@kellyu.2587
@kellyu.2587 9 жыл бұрын
Lorenzo Madmuffin I fail to see how butchering chickens in a huge slaughter house is "the law of the jungle", as you have stated. Rather, it is a very unnatural setting that has only existing since the Industrial Revolution. Before that time, most people either slaughtered their own birds, or bought their meat from a small butcher shop where the butcher would actually do the slaughtering. Quite different from the disconnect we have nowadays from our food's origins.

It's strange how things of equal weirdness are separately considered normal and weird. For example, duck embryos for food are considered bizarre and disgusting by most people from the west. However, the same people that would freak out at the idea of eating a duck embryo will happily eat a cooked, unfertilized duck egg and in fact regularly eat unfertilized chicken eggs. Why is eating the eggs of a chicken, duck or any bird and less weird than eating the embryo?

How to eat balut. 1) crack a small hole on the rounder part of the shell. 2) open a small hole, the size of a bottle cap and sip the broth from the inner sides (liquid inside) 3) enlarge the opening and season to taste. 4) eat the balut (at the bottom, the hardened egg white is edible but tough) Enjoy.

You should drink the soupy part before you take everything out of the shell. The first thing you do when eating a Balut is crack the pointy end of the egg and make a hole sized like a quarter, then add a pinch of salt and a few drops of spicy vinegar. Adding salt and vinegar is not necessary, but it makes it taste even better in ny opinion. You can eat everything inside with salt and vinegar, althought you might have a hard time eating the white part which is called "bato" (stone in Tagalog) and it could get really hard (depending on how old the egg is).

Being a Filipino when I was a little kid and moving country when I was still young, I still remember Balut. Loved it when my mum would break the egg open and I would just sip out the juice. I hated everything else. But I guess 30 years later, I think I would try out everything else of the egg. I believe that you shouldnt eat the duck itself but I may be wrong. Heres a little challenge... Grab a live chicken, slice its throat, drain the blood, remove the feathers, then prepare it for consumption and tell me that that is not a worse experience than eating prepared Balut. FYI, Ive seen it when I was young. From a live chicken running around the house to ready to eat on the dinner table. Fresh and best tasting.

Eating Balut is a cultural thing. it's like us Americans and hotdogs. Hotdogs are pretty grose if you really knew what was in them and how they were made, yet Americans don't think twice about it.

Hey Rhett and Link. You have to crack the balut open at the flatter side of the ovoid but not too much because you should not tear the membrane inside of it because it has the balut soup in it. After you put some vinegar and/or salt in it and suck everything (sucking breaks the membrane and unleashes the soup). Then you can proceed eating it putting vinegar and/or salt at your choice. I live in the Philippines and I love the balut. It is super affordable and very healthy. I am a mythical beast too.

Im a Filipino, but i dont find this offensive, thats the actual first reaction on balut, +Oliver Magat is actually right: 1. 6. Douse the egg with vinegar (or salt optional) and eat it whole.

The goods are in the soup. You crack a very small portion of the shell at the flatter end of the embryo, put some salt on it, and slurp. You don't see the duck yet. A lot of Filipinos actually don't eat the duck itself. Just the yellow part and the soft white part. And it's not abuse. It's the same as eating chickens.

Lots of comments about how "cruel" it is, or how "sad" it is. It's just life... This kind of thing happens in nature (minus the cooking) all the time. Other animals will "attack" the nest of a bird and eat the eggs (embryo or no)... I know, "we're humans, blah blah blah", but life is rough and through time we've developed "traditions" or ways of doing things because of that. Starving people will often find a way to live... Again... Life is rough. Vegetarian or Meat eater... It doesn't matter. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are starving, you WILL do what you must to survive or you will die. Just so happens that people in different parts of the world have developed a taste for some very unique things, likely out of a NEED to eat these things...
@rheides
@rheides 8 жыл бұрын
In technicality it's not cruel, the duck isn't even conscious or completely formed yet when cooked. I don't think it can generally feel pain, it's not even born yet. I generally eat it since it tastes like egg, chicken soup and duck all in one. This street food is one of the best imho

For people who thinks eating or serving balut is "animal cruelty" then what is the difference from eating balut from eating a normal egg? Aren't they the same thing? Also this is a traditional dish of my culture (Filipino) and if you don't understand or like it then don't eat it or make fun of it! That is just disrespectful and rude to make fun of our food... Also you don't microwave balut you boil it because if you microwave it the soup inside will dry up, you don't eat it as a whole you eat it bit by bit and you should have salt and vinegar to make it better.

Ever since I was a kid, like 6, my parents have fed me traditional Vietnamese Cuisine. This covers balut and congealed pork blood. I don't eat congealed pork blood anymore, but balut is something that I can eat although I prefer many others things over it. I eat balut when it is just finished boiling. I crack the egg with a spoon and put a little salt and pepper and get a spoonful of the duck. Before biting into it I get a piece of a mint/vegetable that is called Rau Ram, or Vietnamese Coriander. Balut can be delicious if you get over the fact that it is an embryo and that in reality it's just duck meat.

heres some advice. balut has that water thing inside of it it taste salty but its part of the thing you eat. "my favorite" then put salt and/or vinegar on it specially vinegar with spices. that white thing is also edible but its hard so if you want to eat it feel free. everything is edible except the shell.

You know what's sad? Almost everybody on here are saying "oh poor embryo, this duckling could have lived it's life." I bet that at least half, if not more, of these people that are saying this do agree with aborting babies! Aborted babies are like embryos if not MORE developed, and here are people that rather an ANIMAL not be "aborted" than a HUMAN LIFE! THAT is what makes me sick to my stomach. Our society is ssooo backwards today, in that we'll place more value over an animals life rather than a humans life. THAT is disappointing.

timmy pip as far as mankind actions are concerned. We harm our planet because like every other animal we influence our habitat. Pests destroy ecosystems, just like we do, but on a smaller scale. We are global that's just a fact, and this shows us how full of consequence we can be on an ecosystem

As a filipino, the only thing i eat in balut is the soup and the eggy yolk thingy. You drink soup out of the shell and then you crack the hole bigger to get the parts out. You can cover the duck or what we call "sisiw" pronounced seeseew :) with the shell and i separate the hard thingy on top from the yolk eggy stuff i sprinkle salt on it tastes like an egg yolk that isnt runny :)
