I think the fight with steinman also can teach you about health stations. there is a health station in the area covered in water, and if you damage steinman enough, he runs down to heal himself, which a player might have missed other enemies doing earlier. then it gives you an easy oppurtunity to use electro, as you mentioned. brilliant level all around though.

I remember my first time entering medical and feeling scared! In terms of tone, it reminds me of the morgue in Arkham Asylum. There’s no denying that it’s a highly successful tutorial as well as another terrifying step into a terrifying place! Another parallel would be the medical level in Alien Isolation. Also a terrifying leap forward in gameplay with a mind blowing scare towards the end of the level! Video games can be such great art on so many levels.

Arkham Asylum's morgue is a top tier gaming moment for me - in fact, the entire game is, was always my favourite of the series as it the game was so tightly paced and the environment was so densely packed with things to see/find. I'm a huge fan of the films (the first and second in particular, of course), and the extent to which they nailed the atmosphere and environment was incredibly impressive. Playing again now and I just got to Fort Frolic... You guys ain't kidding. The beginning of the game just sucks me in every time and I've just arrived at Fort Frolic which is definitely the highlight of the game. After this Rapture tends to feel a little empty and tedious to me. It in no way kills the game but it just feels like you're zooming through the game at this point which always brings me back to the original reveal of the game with Ken narrating about what they wanted to implement. I always felt like his vision was the first part of the game but during the second half production just got rushed and doesn't have the same feeling.
@kaushikhegde8227 Жыл бұрын
Same here, these 2 are just above level psycho villains. Medical Pavillion teaches you to survive while Fort Frolic tests your nerve. Steinman is just terrifying because of his horrific human modification experiments while Cohen is above that by using human and splicer body parts as art. But Cohen still lets you live so he is a little merciful to the player.
@JabamiLain2 жыл бұрын
There's something I think it deserves to be pointed out. Did you notice there are at least 3 sites in the game of murdered families (the frozen one in Fort Frolic, the couple who commited suicide after their daughter was turned into a Little Sister and the family with the three daughters in one of the apartaments in Olympyan Highs) ? I might be far fetching, but I think there's a meaning behind those three families, which is connected to the endings. Regarding the bad ending, it's pretty obvious, you have to choose between power and the Little girls. And if you choose the Little girls, that leads to the question "Are you sure you're strong enough to protect them ? Sometimes, you gotta sacrifice some Little Sisters, to save the many girls you turned back to normal.". This could give a whole new meaning to the brutality Jack shows towards the Little girls in the "Sad Tenembaum" ending. Maybe, he's not choosing the city over them in that ending. His addiction, mixed with the need to protect the girls from the world's horrors, gave him a twisted and possessive wish to give them only the best. To build a better world for them. Just like Steinman, in this ending, Jack searches for an impossible perfection.

@@BenPlaysGames Also, I really do enjoy how you explain the mind of a game developer. As a consumer, I don’t really think about how developers have to add certain level mechanics in order to ensure that the player thoroughly enjoys the game, physically and mentally. This video really pointed out that the developers think about how the player is gonna maximize their enjoyment potential, i.e. after the player picks up the shotgun, making enemies immediately swarm in a way that forces the player to understand why the shotgun is perfect at that range and environment. Looking at it now, I’m like “WOW of course this makes perfect sense!” I feel like with the rise and demand for open-world games, this important nuance is sorta lost because it’s meant for the player to just dive in for themselves. This is probably why I enjoy linear first-person games like Bioshock so much.

If you can find any interviews with the head writer, Ken Levine, he explicitly stated he didn’t want the game to have a series of introductory tutorials akin to, “OK, soldier, this is what you have to do…”. He wanted players to (almost) ‘naturally’ develop their own understanding of the mechanics. It's definitely worth revisiting if you ever get the opportunity, especially with the Remastered version tidying everything up a bit. It's always been by far my favourite in the series - very few gaming experiences match up to that first time you slowly make your way through Rapture. 2 was actually very solid and really improved the gameplay in particular but inevitably lacked some of the punch the first had due to the reuse of setting etc. Minerva's Den is absolutely brilliant too, highly recommend that if you've not played it. Infinite I like a lot, but I really struggle with the gameplay after a while as the lack of exploration makes it all feel a bit repetitive after a while.

@@BenPlaysGames I think the horror is a big reason why I haven't revisited it yet haha, I'm a bit of an easy jumper. I loved Infinite, but I agree with the combat, played on Xbox and it always felt a bit stiff to aim and shoot.

The dream! I was always a little disappointed with how static a lot of Infinite's environments were, even if you do get to explore a little before everything really turns bad. Rapture would be a great place to experience something similar now that console can handle more dynamic AI within each environment.

Will you be doing a video over bioshock 2 and infinite? I loved 1 and 2 but couldn’t really catch on with Infinite. I think you’d do a lovely job of commentating. I’m subbing now in case you do

Thanks Jasmine! I definitely want to do Infinite at some point soon. And revisit Minerva's Den, as my previous video was made when I was still learning and could do with being freshened up (a lot). Funny story, I actually got 3/4 through a playthrough of Infinite, stopping to make copious notes on my phone while playing, and then I managed to lose the phone with everything on. Brutal. However, I will definitely try again soon!

@@BenPlaysGames I really really want to try Infinite again but I was just so turned off by the difference. But to be fair I was also like 15 when I first played, so my attention span wasn’t there lol. I love that I came across this video because I’ve just recently (like within the past week) started replaying bioshock 1. Like I said, I played when I was just a kid so now replaying it I get the story a lot more and it feels a lot like a rekindled romance hahah. I’ll definitely be watching for it! Sorry to hear about the phone, that really blows!

True, but granted i never thought that most of this thing is by design, at most part it didnt came through to me because i held into the re4 level design aka the handgun is always multipurpose tool if you aim and shoot quick enough, the machine gun part? Pass it by standing in the right corner, the oil? Shoot the oil after i pick the plasmid, turrent ? Duck at the counter and play the timing, shotgun? A handgun can have spread if you hip fire quick enough Seriously i start using plasmid and other weapon after i fight with the doctor, and now i realize why i ration bullet on this game for no good reason

@@BenPlaysGames oh yeah, its a great game. The FPS play feels a bit clunky, not as fluid as say doom 2016 or eternal but still a very fun and entertaining game. I had all sorts of ways to kill big daddys by exploting pathing issues. Its funny how you mentioned that some gamers wont find it so obvious you need some sort of fire to melt the ice in front of that door, haha. Played so many games including puzzle games such as zelda, you see that room you immediately think, yup need some heat over there.

I loved everything in this game except for the enemies. They were designed well, but the way they behave in the game and react to players actions... they feel like paper dolls. Each time I had to fight one I was pulled right out of the game. I kinda wish they remade the game, with just this aspect fixed. Edit: Oh, and with the bloody pipe minigame replaced with literally anything else. :)

I like to save all the red exploding cannisters through the level. When the big daddy shows up at the end. I pile all of them up by the little sister vents and when he comes back by I throw one of them at the pile and boom. Big Daddy dead, little sister rescued. Then I have plenty of ammo and Eve for the next level. 🤣

I'm in a similar boat to you mate - loved the original, 2 wasn't quite as impactful but really improved the gameplay and Infinite, while interesting in terms of setting and characters, really dropped the ball in terms of gameplay and ended up being a very repetitive experience.
@FadeicalPowerTV2 жыл бұрын
@@BenPlaysGames I can see why the people that started with the original tend to not like Infinite as much. I love it because it felt like a prequel into playing the first two games. I also thought that the Skyhook/Skyline mechanics were nice and also that you could use your Vigors and shoot at the same time whereas you could only use a plasmid or shoot one at a time. Definitely atmospherically and gameplay wise I think I had the most fun on the original Bioshock, but Infinite has a special place being that was my introduction to the series
