Ahhh this level was quite literally the hardest-hitting narrative moment... The feeling of achieving a victory in passing off Cortana, but slightly bittersweet as hardened Noble 6 is inevitably overwhelmed. I can totally understand everyone's hope of Noble 6 hiding away in a cave, it's hard to accept. Great one as always!!
@Jammermaker2 жыл бұрын
I mean I just watched the scene again yesterday after beating the game and you never see a lethal blow actually landed on Noble 6. And the helmet is removed before the scene begins so there is a chance that they found a deep cave and somehow avoided the glassing. I'm not sure on the mechanics of it and whether or not the process of glassing a planet causes the atmosphere to vent but if it doesn't there is a significantly greater than zero chance that Noble 6 survived.
@livirus38262 жыл бұрын
@@Jammermaker Tbh, unless he appears in Halo Infinite, I think we should just accept that 6 is very much dead, otherwise it would take away all of the emotional impact that came with Reach's final mission. Don't get me wrong, I WANT him to be alive. I love Noble 6 as a mysterious lone wolf character that is pretty much the only Spartan in existence that can match Master Chief. And I'm also not saying there is 0 chance he DID survive, since I think his lore specifically states that he's an excellent survivalist and has the skills necessary to survive a full-on glassing. Also since Infinite seems to be kinda fanservice-y, I wouldn't be surprised if they confirm Noble 6's survival in SOME kind of way. I, however, choose to believe Noble 6 is dead, as much as I want him to be alive

It's subtle, but 6 changed over the course of the game. He starts out a lone wolf, learns the value of teamwork and sees Jorge's sacrifice for others, then sacrifices himself to save everyone else by staying behind and manning the gun to let the autumn escape. His line "that's a one-way trip" is an objection to Jorge sacrificing himself, an objection Jorge further pushed back when he said "don't deny me this", as if 6 was going to do something to stop Jorge from blowing himself up.

Jorge picks you up and tosses you out. I always felt based on that dialogue you mention and those actions, that he is preventing you from stopping him. I do think it really was the spirit of Jorge that inspires all of the sacrifices of Nobel team. When we first meet Nobel team in Winter Contingency, especially in the end cutscene, they're kind of pricks. They're not nice or polite, they're hardened, cynical, and jaded. Jorge seems to be the most optimistic and giving, and I think he inspires all of them to keep going and eventually those of them who give their lives for the greater good. To me, when Jorge says there's good news and bad news, when they're both actually bad news according to Nobel 6, I think it shows Jorge's unwavering optimism. And when he takes off his helmet for the last time, to me it seems to signify his humanity.

The final mission was a brave decision by Bungie. Someway, it is something Halo had never experienced before. It is necessary to fully understand the sacrifice of the last Noble Team member: fight untile the end. At that point there is no mission, no objective ( except survive ); we have done everything we could to raise the changes of humanity against the Covenant. The only thing left to do is to fight again and die on the battlefield like a tru warrior. P.S. with the death of Noble 6, there are 14 dead Spartan on the battlefield. Let's all remember this was the first Halo game, after 4 entries in the franchise, where we could customize entirely our spartan and the protagonist of the campaign. I'm sure that we all spent quite a lot of time in that customization menu before starting the campaign. The game gave us the chance to know that in this game we were the main character, we were the ones on the front lines and not Master Chief, and the first time we see our customized Spartans (first time we see ourselves in-game) we see a broken helmet in a dead planet. That hit me in a whole other level.

I I remember the first time I got that objective. I was already thoroughly entrenched in the game. Pretty early on you figure out what this game is and that none of the Spartans are going to survive. When you see Master Chief off worlded and you’re there knowing this leads into Combat Evolved and you’re not in the rest of the story… I knew it was the end. I was not ready to effectively have to play my own death though and it was the most frantic fighting I’ve ever played a game. There’s the realization your ammo is going to run out, that there is no where for you to go and that “Survive” really means you’re not going to. This game was a masterpiece for me and still my favorite of the series for the story (with ODST not far behind).

One thing that kinda stood out to me about this mission is the exact circumstances of 6's death. The last time you see 6, they're about to be killed by a Zealot with an Energy Dagger. Another thing I found interesting in the language of imagery in these cutscenes was, every time one of the Spartans of noble team died there was a small hinting of their impending death and acceptance of it through the discarding of their helmet. Minus Emile and Kat that is.(Kat ironically does gets shot through the head though.) It's cool too because the very first shot we get before the campaign kicks off, is that iconic scene of Noble 6's helmet sunken in the sand. First time I played this game, I saw that and said, "oh shit, this Halo's going to be intense." What I do like about Emile's end though, is even though they don't play on the helmet trope, his dialogue captures the essence of the whole team. He pretty much embodies every Spartan of Noble teams resolve in words. "I'm ready, how about you!?" ---just before he precedes to lay the smack down on the last Ellie that just gored him with an energy sword.

Those dumb bugs wouldn’t know what hit em! At first, it was easy, mowing down aliens like it was about to be outlawed. I was hoppin’ and poppin’ and shootin’ and lootin’ alike a proper super soldier! Then my visor cracked, and my HUD went out. That’s when I started to doubt Noble 6 would survive. I am, as my ex-girlfriends like to say, a stubborn asshole. And as a stubborn asshole, I was still determined to survive. I kept shooting and moving, grabbing guns from dead Spartans and aliens. I was putting them down alright, but not nearly fast enough. Then plasma mortars started landing. I was hoping that whatever was going to save my hide happened soon. Then, I took enough damage for the level to end, and I had to watch my character die. I was heartbroken. But, I felt better after Dr. Halsey made her speech. I was happy knowing he/I died saving humanity. As the cutscene ended, I gave Noble 6 a heartfelt farewell salute.

Halo Reach was such a breath of fresh air compared to the original trilogy. No shade to ODST, but in that game you knew you weren't as strong as spartans, which made you naturally feel weaker. But in Reach, you are basically the chief without the luck. Like you mentioned, it showed that spartans aren't invincible like the chief, and the futility of fighting on a glassed planet really gives another solid perspective of the war. I never expected a Halo game to make me shed tears. Ultimately, this was the best possible farewell that bungie could have made for the halo franchise they controlled and hands-down my favourite. For those that read the books, this game has extra meaning as you grasped the ending the minute the game was announced... I'm hoping they make a Harvest game one day and get to play as Johnson.

I know what you said about the objective shown at the beginning of the mission, but if there's an objective that would work just as well as "Survive," if not better, "Give them Hell" is the one I would put forward. While the former gives you hope that you can have a happy ending, the latter just flat out implies "yeah, you're basically a dead man, but hurt the Covenant in the worst way you can," which is a hopeful attitude that's much more in line with the later games themes and messages. Not to mention, given Six's status as being hyper lethal, just being a huge pain in the ass for the Covenant is a great way to send him or her off, and with their sacrifice for the greater good, it feels better for me to just brutally take down as many covies as I can before they take me. It might just be that I really, really seethe against the Covenant that I feel this objective would work better, but oh well. Also, I'm a little disappointed you didn't touch on the chapter title, I really have a thing going for that.

Really love the way you talk about all Halo's missions, you alway give an objective point of view. Also this mission is possibly the best way to end a game. I mean, when Halo Reach has came out, we all knew what's gonna happen next so Noble 6 deserved a really good end. I do hope Master Chief gona have an end as good as Noble 6 had cause i don't know if it's a good idea to keep some characters way too long in time.
@BenPlaysGames2 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the kind words dude! Can't argue with what you said either, really, really solid way to end the game in a way that's memorable without being melodramatic.

If I had the money and time I'd hire all the people who worked on Reach and make a small cutscene where Noble Six walks outside a cave with their armor having visible damages and scars. I'd want it to not show their face obviously. I want Noble Six to look out at a field and see several UNSC pelicans land down and setting up a small camp.
@Tigerai_2 жыл бұрын
This mission makes us, the players, feel just like how noble team (and the UNSC forces on Reach) felt as the game progresses. We can't win. We know that we won't win. Yet we still fight on until the end, because we still hope that we will succeed.

As a 17 year old back when reach came out, I'm not afraid to admit that Halo Reach put tears in my eyes at the ending, with that speech. I had sat and played the whole game through in one sitting on Legendary, I was really stoned and felt like I was there with Noble team through the whole thing, the struggle of Legendary difficulty alone compounded my emotions when I finally beat it. I wish I could relive that moment again... Remember Reach.
@h4zrd-rs2522 жыл бұрын
The beautiful thing about lone wolf is that most games would use it as the final gut punch to player. In Reach, the entire second half of the game is a gut punch and kicking you while you're down, then they use lone wolf as the final spit to the face before leaving. Rather than being the whole cake of despair that any other developer would use it for, Bungie uses it as the icing on top to put everything together. And if you're a hopeless fanboy like myself, a soldier isn't dead if you don't see a body, only missing in action. Halo: Reach 2 will always live in my heart.

I think the single most brutal element of the ending is that you don’t see it coming. You’re shown the opening of Halo 1, credits role and the last you see of 6 implies that they die. But then the loading screen starts again and suddenly just when you think you’ve escaped Reach, you’re dragged back and forced to LIVE 6’s last moments. Visceral and cruel, and beautifully done.

I like how you can survive forever and not have to do anything by quickly running to the building to the right, right when you start the mission. Push the crates in the corner next to each other to create a protective barrier around you and toggle crouch. Now you can just sit there and hear the aliens speak in the distance around you and drop ships flying overhead, but they won’t find you

At the end of the day, this level hits pretty hard because Noble 6 knows that he's going to die in order to buy humanity more time. Luckily, everything works out for Chief and Cortana mostly, but Noble 6 knows that his role was fulfilled at the end of it all. He goes from a loner to a team player that sees the bigger picture.
