I purchased a Husqvarna saw from ya'll and LOVE it! my first 20 bottles were perfect with little chipping. today I ended up having to toss all 5 with big chunks gone on the bottom. 99.9% sure it's just because I'm dog tired and not going slow enough. Thank you for all of the valuable information, I am just getting into cold working, just purchased a 7" SKIL saw, I am currently using the blade that came with the saw. However, I was just gifted with Bborofloat Plate Glass 9mm, and being new to this craft I am not sure what blade I should use. I have tried to cut with the blade that came with the wet saw but it seems it will take me a lifetime to cut this glass, as I have to move extremely slowly and the cut is larger than I'd like. I can see that would lose a lot of glass with this blade. Can you please steer me in the right direction for the correct blade to use? At some point I will also be cutting gemstones.

If you don't have to worry about the mess from a lot of water running out the drain port of your saw, you can put your pump in a five gallon bucket, fill it with water and keep feeding it from a hose. The advantage of this is, you are always pumping clean water through the pump, rather than water having the abrasive leavings from your cutting operations. P.S. I've bought materials from HisGlasWorks and am pleased the products and response.

You can also permanently attach a drain line to your plug hole on the saw to prevent the water mess as well. We have done this on our larger saws in the past.

Jack Vu In our experience it has been next to impossible to get a straight cut out of a diamond band saw and the bands tend to break pretty often. We've never been fans of diamond band saws which is why we don't carry any.

The MK saws do a pretty good job on water delivery for glass diamond blades. Sometimes blades are not dressed from the factory as they are supposed to be. You can get sparks from undressed blades and from fine blades that you push too hard against as they will cause excess heat generation since they are slower cutting blades. Sparks can come from too little water on the blade, but they are not the only reason.

No need for oil when cutting glass. If you were cutting stone then you would need to use oil with the 303 but not with glass. Just use water.

Excellent explanation, I work blown of scientific glass and I just bought a MK glass cutting disc for my borosilicate glass pipe cutter, but I'm seeing that the edge is not smooth, I have to use the stone when the disc is new?

Generally most blades are dressed from the factory and will have an arrow on the blade showing the directly you should run it in. If you run it in the opposite direction it will cause more chipping and you'll need to dress the blade in that direction and stay in that direction. It also will depend on the type of blade, there are everything from slabbing rough blades, to medium cut, to fine cut to resin blades that have different cuts and surfaces. Water is also important with fine grit glass blades. You need plenty of water on the contact point of the blade and the glass to prevent excess chipping.

It's all about the water usage when it comes to glass. Most tile saws will work but you need to make sure it provides enough water to the contact point of the blade and the glass. Tile blades will also destroy the glass, you really need more glass specific blades like the ones in this video.

NO! Never handle a blade while the machine is running. While diamond blades will not cut you, they can still injure you. Never handle a blade while the motor is on. Hand tightening is all you need to do. Once running the movement of the blade and resistance will tighten it down further.

Could this work well on flat borosilicate dichroic sheets without chipping the dichroic layers? They are only on one side of the sheets. Thanks!

+Sean March The biggest issue with dichroic sheets is the thinness of the glass. Most sheets are only about 1/16 thick so even fine grit diamond blades will tend to want to chip out that thin glass and take coating with it. With a finer grit diamond blade, you'll want a little bit of a thicker core or you'll run the risk ot putting too much pressure on the blade as you try to cut and oftentimes that will warp the core on thinner blades and ruin the blade. It's better to have a little more core stability with finer grit diamond blades

Not really. Pretty much any grit dressing stick will work well. We use an 80 grit to make it quite and effective, but it can be rougher or finer and still work well.

You can certainly cut the bottoms of the wine bottles as well with this setup. There is not a jig "out of the box" for something like that, but it can be easily fabricated for the particular piece.

No, you'll want a blade that is specifically made for glass. Standard tile blades are continous rim but they are far too aggressive for glass.

Jack Mehoff Trim saws are a bit different as they are designed for thin material cutting with very little depth of cut. The larger 10 inch MK saws are open saws with clearance on all sides. The MK101-24 has a rubber coated slide tray with a longer 24 inch throat. It's a higher end belt driven saw versus a smaller direct drive saw. The MK-170 is a cheaper direct drive system with no slide tray meant for occasional use. Not very heavy duty. It's mostly about build quality and longevity.

That was a piece of SCHOTT S8 glass. They no longer make that particular glass but you can get glass block from any number of glass suppliers.

Use masking tape on the glass for cutting, it will make your glass to get chipped less.

I would recommend against trying to cut tempered glass as it is designed to release all the strain in the glass at one time throughout the glass so cutting or drilling into it generally will shatter it into tiny pieces.

The MK101-24 is a bit sturdier built and made for more professional use. Yes, MK does make some "throw away" saws, but we try not to offer those to customers. The Husqvarna TS250 saws are a better built saw, but also heavy and large. Smaller saws than 10 inch are generally not made for heavy duty use so the larger you go the better built the saw and the more room they take up
