Question, you said you couldn't do an energy balance on the boiler because you didn't know q(in). If q(in) was only (h5-h4), couldn't you have just found h5 and h4 and do the energy balance on the boiler instead of the FWH?

Yes, but in that context we were trying to come up with a mass flow rate or a proportion of mass flow rates - so we would have needed Q dot in (the rate of heat transfer in), not qin (the specific heat transfer in).
