I watch a lot of beauty fail vids and the comments are always full of "she should have gone to a salon!". Well, this is exactly WHY people don't want to go to a salon. I'd rather screw it up myself than pay someone else to. I've done all my own beauty treatments since middle school- makeup, manicures, cutting/coloring my own hair- and I've never messed anything up even a fraction as bad as some of these. The few times I've "treated myself" by letting a "professional" do my hair I had to go fix her mistakes at home or wear wigs until the disaster grew out. What are they even teaching in beauty school anymore??? There's no excuse for clients to walk out looking like that.

This is why I've been cutting my own hair for the last 50 years. When I was 19 years old, my regular hairdresser went on vacation for three months. While he was gone, I did my own layered cut, copying the way I"d watched him do it. When he got back, I went to get a trim. He combed through my hair and asked who had been cutting my hair. I apologized and said I did it myself. He asked me if I wanted a job and said he couldn't believe I managed to cut the hair in the back and get it so perfect. Figured after that that I might as well do it myself and save $$$. I had a hairdresser cut my hair one time about 30 years ago and she screwed it up so bad I learned my lesson. My only advice is to buy a GOOD PAIR of professional scizzors. Cut off less than you think you need to - you can always cut more.

My mother took me to get the Princess Diana haircut when I was five (it was a rage around the time Lady Diana died). The hairdresser gave me a crew cut instead. I cried all the way home. I never go to a hairdresser anymore. I have tailbone length hair now and I easily trim it at home. So much better.

Absolutely right! I also learned & have cut my own for a few decades. I get compliments & asked to cut others hair. They always ask, “how did you do the back?” Like you, I watched, then got a real hairdressing school binder of “how to” & did it. I even learned to perm my own hair & have never fried it since. Never ever paid for a perm again after it got fried. Some people do not listen when. You even tell them, it will fry easily. I applaud you. Way to go! Nice to know I am not the only one who did this too. ❤

I've been cutting my own hair for about 40 years. I can't even believe the money people spent on this crap. Unbelievable. I love my haircuts. Haven't cut it at all lately as I am growing it out but my haircuts always look good.

Only two people out of about 8-9 have done my hair nicely and how I wanted it. The last bad experience cost me almost $400, 14 inches of hair that was completely botched, dye fried and an hour of sobbing for wanting a fresh look because my hair was gorgeous and healthy before this chic literally destroyed it. I didn’t even want to leave my home it was so bad. I waited for it to grow out some because I didn’t want it shorter and couldn’t dye it again because it was so unhealthy. My daughter who just started school, 4 months prior to doing my hair, fixed it for me and did the most perfect cut and highlights I’ve EVER (in 40 years) had!! My daughter will be the only one to ever touch my hair again! She’s so incredibly talented and intelligent and I’m so proud of her! My daughter has given me my confidence back.❤

I was going to comment that it is best just to get a wig than have someone mess up your hair. I have several wigs and it’s fun to mix it up sometimes. My most expensive wig was $500. but worth it. (100% real hair)😊

License Cosmetologist here and Nail Tech. When going to the hair salon, NEVER EVER get your hair curled after a cut. Many hair stylists do not know how to cut hair and when they curl or blow dry it flipped out or in, it covers the flaws. ALWAYS make sure you ask them to straighten it, so you can see how good or bad they cut it. I don't care how bad the customers are. I NEVER do a bad job as my reputations and all my skills that I worked hard for will be ruined. I always give all my clients 110%. I don't understand why some people who do not know how to do it will always think they can, but the outcome is always different and they will not own up to their own mistakes.

Some of these, especially the really bad hair,there's no way they were done at an accredited salon. Somebody's cousin did them at home. Also,you pay after the service is done. So,the people saying they paid 3 or 4 hundred dollars,WHY???? I would refuse to pay them for their mess. That's crazy.

This is honestly why I don’t go to hair salons/nail places. I hate nail polish anyway, I think it’s a sensory (possibly on the spectrum) thing, but i hate the way nail polish feels on my fingers and the idea of fake nails 😨 And the ones where they have pushed the cuticle way back look awful. And make my fingers hurt just to look at them.

I have had a very similar thing happen. I have had my hair cut 4 times by 4 different stylists in 4 different towns. None of them could get my hair to look like the one I wanted. I started off with long hair, wanted a pixie/bob... got an angle bob, to an undercut bob, to a long pixie to a short pixie. I'm just going to let it grow back out and go back to cutting it myself.

I am so tired of crap work. I blame the internet, people think they can watch one video and know what they are doing. Went to a salon, high end one, and asked for my hair to be dyed and cut. She left out half my hair and when I asked her about it said she thought I wanted to leave that part with old grown out dye alone and was willing to let me walk.out that way. The trouble is, with everything, new trends come about, and a lot of stylists don’t keep up with retraining, learning new techniques, new colour applications etc. also with colours, everyone’s hair is different, and will take the colour differently. Never expect your hair to come out exactly as a picture, all hair is different. If I want a different style, I research styles for my hair type, that way, at least I have a fighting chance of getting close to what I want. I’m not totally getting the thick eyebrow trend though, that has changed from wanting a thin line, to big and bushy. Glad mine are in the middle.

It’s crazy they paid a tip, but I think unless the place feels bad and says no charge, if you don’t pay they😢call the cops and call it “theft”.. I think you have to pay and then go to court to get your money back..

⁠@@johrathbunI don’t think it’s victim shaming, it’s the fact that it continues to allow them to do this to people with no consequences. It did happen to me once, I paid at the time but went back the next day as I was very unhappy with the service that I received. You are paying them for a professional service and that is what you should get. I not only had my haircut fixed, but they gave me a refund. I was very nice about it and maybe cried a little (which was certainly not fake) but they did seem to feel bad. I never went back there though. And luckily we don’t tip in Australia. What you pay, especially in the US, is plenty (not waiters though, they do not get decent wages over there from their employer and rely on tips) which is disgraceful. Tipping is not overly common here, and certainly not expected by wait staff to survive.

Let's see...a hairdresser cut a FOOT off my hair once when I asked for a trim. Another time, the hairdresser left the curlers/solution of a permanent wave on for much too long (I was begging her to come take them out as my scalp was being BURNED). When she finally took the curlers out, my hair was burned off and was wrapped around the curlers (over a foot of my hair was gone and I had second degree chemical burns on my scalp). I sued her and the salon and won. After that disaster, it took years for me to go back to any salon. I've been with the same stylist for decades now (I am 66 yo). She's worth waiting for! That's happened to me too. Wanted a spiral perm when they were in fashion, got an afro instead. Hairdresser left the perm lotion on too long and burnt my hair. I told her she was using the wrong rollers. Found out later she was only an apprentice. Never went back. Second time was in 2003. Wanted a trim to even up my waist length hair. Hairdresser started at the back so I couldn't see what she was doing. She cut my waist length hair into a mid bob. I don't suit mid bobs and I had a wedding reception that night. I paid her, walked out, went home and bawled my eyes out to my husband. I've never gone near a hairdresser since. Now in my mid 60s my hair is thinning badly. Found the ideal solution - wigs. Can change my style and colour every day if I want 😁

Ah the stories.... I had a hairdresser start off the conversation that she was having PMS, I left early that visit. Actually had a salon tell me they can't do curly hair..... Another one left me under the red lamp so long, I got a migraine upon leaving. Had one refuse to blow out my hair because "It's too gorgeous curly, like that . let it air dry"....left with wet hair. Uggh!

I had an awesome hair stylist about 30 years ago. The "Rachel" was a really popular hair style at the time and my hair stylist cut and styled my hair with what she called a "modified Rachel". She always made me look and feel like a million bucks and I always got a ton of complements. Then I had to move cross-country. When I got to my new job, I noticed who in my office had nice hair and I asked for references to stylists. I went to the most recommended stylist in town, but it was a bit concerning to me that there were so many pictures on the walls of models with 80's mullets. I went in with my hair styled exactly the way I wanted it, told here that the cut was basically a "Rachel" and said I just needed a trim and "whatever you do, don't give me a mullet." I'll give you one guess what she did to me. I started cutting my own hair and haven't been back to a salon since. (Oh, yeah, and I get a ton of complements on my hair)

I have cut my own hair for decades now. Why? I went to get my hair done before I got married. I have baby fine naturally blonde hair. Good thing I went a few weeks before to see how it would look. I was informed whatI wanted was “old fashioned”. Sabotaged me totally. She BURNT my hair doing a perm, it looked fried. Didn’t take responsibility for it either. I cried. I had grown it specifically to have the style I wanted. I had to go to another salon to get it cut off. They did what they could to get it how I really wanted it. The first salon totally frizzled my very baby fine hair. Never again. I learned how to do my own & have saved lotsa $$ since. Now I only go for french braiding. No cuts, no dyes. Just braid it. Believe it when I tell you, even THAT can be done poorly. Sad the salons actually hire these posers. They sure aren’t “hairdressers”. Always go in before you want to be done to sit for a bit to see which person KNOWS what they are doing. It seems MOST don’t. Good luck! ADVICE - NEVER PAY IN ADVANCE & NEVER PAY IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY. WALK AWAY. Maybe then the news will spread, if you don’t know what you are doing, stop.

Had the exact same person do the exact same thing (painting my nails) .....it started wearing of the second I was out the door (like in the hallway of the business). I went back to have her fix it imediately .....haven´t been back since...

Yes, many of these hair cuts were bad. I do wonder about how they graduated from Cosmetology School. But, I do have a saying to explain an incompetent worker, "SOMEONE has to graduate last in a class." As far as getting nails and make up done: I dont understand why people get their nails done. It just destroys your own nails because they can't breathe. Plus having cuticles cut can cause severe infections or permanently change the shape of the nail and not in a good way. I wouldn't trust makeup either for being safe. Its supposed to be new for each client but I'm sure many make up artists find ways to cover up reusing items and there are many distracted clients that will miss seeing a suspect item. Having ones make up done poorly is probably the least of ones worry. Also, only one "bride" mentioned she had a trial with her makeup artist. THIS is a must for any wedding party that is going to use a stranger (to them, as far as applying make up).

right, but nails don't breathe. Nails are made by cheratine, the same of hairs, and it's technically dead material. The matrix at the bottom and the small part that is attached to the finger is obviously still alive, but if all the nail could breathe would be very painful even cutting it. The "destroy" situation come from un-skilled nail techs that file poorly the upper part of the nail to get acrylics or gel grip, if done correctly the nails will just be roughened and should not hurt. Plus, regular polish do not ruin nails in any way!

I moved back to my town, had a great hairdresser previously, had always liked how my mums hair looked so I went to her hairdresser. Not only does a brilliant job, but charges AUD $25 as her professional salon is in her backyard and even has a massage chair. Even full colours or balayage are only about $100 and always looks terrific. Word of mouth is always the way to go, has always worked for me. PS Who on earth pays $400 plus tip for such a crappy job? Not this little black duck. I know it’s awkward but it’s better than feeling like crap and that you’ve been ripped off, which you have!!

I didn’t understand why these people are not speaking up while they’re being worked on. I check and ask if they are going to fix my nails if I can see it’s not turning out the way I wanted it. I also don’t leave until I’m happy with my results and ask politely if it can be adjusted./or fixed.The same with the hairdresser. I had a totally botched colour last week and told them I was not happy with it and wanted it fixed .They agreed to put foils in and it’s better-but I will never go back there again. Speak up it is you who will pay and should be happy and not be traumatised .Treating yourself to a nice experience to make you feel lovely ❤ * Polite but firm and respectful will usually work better than losing your cool.🍀

0:54 THIS is what a stylist did to me! Then she put in small perm rollers on the sides, and used big foam rollers on the thicker hair at the back. The sides were burning and the back was so loose that it wasn’t curling. It was a terrible mess, and it nearly killed my hair to have the back rolled and treated again, two weeks later. It still did’t hold. It took 2 full years to recover the hair loss and mess! She quit, right after that, and still apologizes after almost 30 years. I never even acted mad, but I shed a few tears.

I so completely feel what all these clients have gone through. I went in to the stylist that had been doing my hair for 2 years asking for curtain bangs.She gave me micro bangs that literally looked like they had been chemically burnt off. The second she did it she said, "Oh no! Did I just cut these too short?" Literally the worst thing you could possibly say. Its taken me 6 months of struggling to grow them back out and my hair is still completely messed up. I always tip at least 20% so I don't understand why she clearly hated me so much. I went to a different stylist to see if she could fix it and she said there is no way that was done by accident. Anyone who would do that to a client is NOT your friend.

I had that manicure once. Went to the beauty school and had two students who had passed their manicure block and tried to give me and my friend acrylic nails. Must have been the two students talking in the back of the class, they had no idea what they were doing. Nails fell off on the way home thank goodness

My niece managed to get lasting waves (for a day at least) in her hair by first using dry shampoo and then braiding it and leaving the braids in overnight. So, in theory, you should be able to get curly hair if you do the same, but use rollers in your hair instead of braiding it.

Yes. Virgin or not, straight hair is straight because it's round like a straw (but not hollow). Curly hair is flat like a ribbon. It won't stay straight, and straight hair won't curl. If you can get it to go against what it's naturally going to do, it won't last. That's a fact.

I do the same. It takes time but it’s much cheaper and it’s fun to try different things. If they don’t turn out right,at least the cost is minimal. The more you do them yourself the better you get at it, and you don’t have to explain to anyone exactly what you want.

As a retired Cosmetologist and salon owner, I can honestly say, there is NO WAY any of these ladies would have been allowed to leave looking like this! First off, I always made sure that the stylists and nail techs knew their job, and were the best I could find. That means KNOWING what their work looked like BEFORE them working for me. When someone does horrible hair or nails, that makes the whole shop look bad. I also have to ask, what are they teaching in cosmetology and barber schools these days?

TBH none of the "inspo" images for the nails are nice. they all look tacky and fake AF. used to be a real talent 🤣 growing your own nails, now everyone has unflattering plastic nails, whether they are well-executed or not. everyone knows they're fake, so what's to admire? also doesn't help when the "inspo" images are of nails with naturally long nail beds, and most of the recipients have pretty short nail beds, in some cases, very short nail beds. never going to look great, regardless. to top it off, it wrecks your natural nails, and the UV lamp ages your hands. same with the current fashion for massive lashes, slug brows, and inflated lips. just because you CAN do it, doesn't mean you should. it might even be technically well-executed, but IS IT FLATTERING?

When I retired, I stopped getting my hair cut by professionals. My hair was thinning so much, any part would be roughly an inch wide! Bought a Wahl clipper and do my own hair now. Save $70 a pop and it looks great. Also stopped dyeing my hair 10 years ago. Went grey before it was 'fashionable'.

No ones hair can look like a models hair as no ones hair is the same, some can't take hair dye very well and if you have very straight hair the curl or wave probably won't stay. Usually you will be told if your hair can be done like the picture you take in. Models, most of the time, wear wigs anyway, especially hair style models. So best not to copy but create your own style or ask the hairdresser for a style to suit you and your type of hair. The nails, if you have young hands with long slender nails, good for you, but the older person will never have nails like a young person, so again, don't copy a picture, think about something original. Again, nail models are done by the type of professional that any lay person can afford, that is why they are employed for that work as they are the best. So think about it, be natural and don't copy, you will be much happier people and will save a lot of money and heartache.

Moved to a base city. Hot July, 30 cm hair, went to mall salon. Told the stylist my philosophy is, it will grow back. I wanted short and shorter in the back. I then said “shear me”… hair hitting floor… while talking, found out she was an army barber. Moonlighting here. I told an Army Barber to “Shear Me”. She gave me an induction haircut AND shaved the back of neck to top ears. I admitted that she gave me short and shorter in the back. I tipped. It took six months to grow back out…

I went to a Regis salon…..once. My hair was butchered off. I had to go somewhere else, where more hair had to be cut. I looked like I had taken a shaver to it. Took me a long time to go to any salon after. I go to the beauty school now. It takes hours for cuts but I know what I want gets done. Unfortunately I can’t reach up or behind my head or I’d cut it.

I went to a Regis back in the 80's when I was in college. I was wanting my "Valerie Bertinelli" long layered cut trimmed. I didn't see what she was doing as she was cutting. I wound up with a MULLET! I cried for a very long time every time I looked into a mirror. Thankfully, hair does grow!

As a client, you should ask them if they have a photo album with other clients pictures get a referral from a friend if you see someone who has amazing hair, ask them where they got it done and who the hairdresser is you can also ask for the top hairstylist guaranteed to get a good professional cut ask for the colour specialist in the salon ask around and research

Nail techs/manicurist need to have a license, always check for that. So do hair dressers/barbers/master barbers. Check out your manicurist workspace and nails. If it's not clean or their nails look bad, leave. Look at your hairdresser's hair. If it looks bad, I would expect bad. You have to have pride in yourself and your work. If you like your stylists hair, ask who does it. Go to that person. Makeup artists need a license too. When in doubt ask for it. If you're getting your Makeup done for a big event, they should have pictures to show you. You are paying for a service. You have the right to ask questions or to cancel your appointment. Unless the they have their policy posted in regards to cancelations stating you still pay. Then I would go to the manager and explain your reservations. Read reviews, yelp, ask on Facebook, Instagram to see if someone you know has gone to that person. I feel bad for all of these women. I hope you all find the hairdresser, Makeup artist or manicurist that gives you great service every time!! Also, when in doubt speak your truth!

Seeing things like this makes me so glad I wear tichel-style head wraps. I get to change my "hair" everyday (or multiple times in a day, if I want to), it is so easy to dress up/down, easy to play with trends (without having to make an hours-long and $$$ commitment in a salon chair...to possibly get some of the above disappointing results), easy to fix/change if you get caught in a rain storm (and impervious to wind!)...and, oh yeah, doing my "hair" in the morning takes less than two minutes, on average.
