Your recommended answers to this question are spot-on. I came to this video because I have a critical interview coming up where this is quite likely to be asked. I think I've been asked this in every interview I've had and I agree that it's a poor question to ask. Before I watched this video I have always stated the first 2 choices, since they tend to work together. Being self-critical an over-analyzing your own work is a sign of being methodical and deeply invested. If these are true traits that a candidate has (I surely do) then stating these two things should come naturally.

This is one of the most commonly asked questions in a job interview. And normally when they ask this question in the interview they will also add "And please dont tell me your greatest weakenss is that your a perfectionist". But I would say how you answer this should also have to do with what kind of job you are applying for. Lets say its for sales or customer service. Then you really wouldnt want to say your weakness is that your "quiet" because they are looking for outgoing assertive people.
@edutechional6 жыл бұрын
Those are great insights and I agree completely. The job and company should be taken into account when preparing a resume along with preparing for an interview.

my favorite answer is, my greatest weakness is my pride but I always remain humble...I actually used it today during my interview.
@sarahtipton71107 жыл бұрын
I hate this question because my greatest weakness is honestly that I'm a perfectionist. It makes me quite slow and I will do things over and over until I think it's acceptable. But you give that answer to your interviewer and they just think you picked the first answer you saw on some blog post. Guess I'll have to use the 'self critical' answer
@dagwould7 жыл бұрын
Greatest weakness: so does being a perfectionist degrade you performance by...what, 1%? So hardly an issue. Because there's no point of comparision, your greatest weakness might sound bad, but be less a performance impediment than someone with a 'good' weakness that degrades their performance by 80%.
@sarahtipton71107 жыл бұрын
To be fair, I think my 'perfectionism' is bordering OCD, so I'm probably not a good representation of that issue. This is to the point of, for example, redoing my whole final year sketchbook at university because I thought my handwriting was messy. So in my case, it severely degrades my performance.

@dagwould7 жыл бұрын
My approach to this dumbest of all questions, usually asked by rank amateur pop psychologists, it to convert it into 'what I'm working on right now....I'm not satisfied with my performance at...but to meet my own standards I'm ... Problems with the question are: 1. it is inviting you to incriminate yourself. In Australia that could be grounds for an unfairness complaint to Fair Work Australia (a government tribunal) even before you get the job, and damages being awarded!, 2. it is uncalibrated. What if your greatest weakness is that you are a tad less genius than Einstein, but you say that you are 'stupid'. how does that compare to the other person whose greatest weakness is that they can't learn from experience and are indeed 'stupid'? No comparison of course, so the interviewer has no means of 'norming' answers and making any sense of them. Favourite flip answers: I don't suffer fools, I don't answer all the questions that I am asked, I am flatulent, or I have poor lip-synch.
@Numantino3126 жыл бұрын
0 to 0:50 the interviewee will incriminate themselves by revealing a true weakness "i'm prone to doing cocaine to keep myself going during project crunch times" or do a poorly constructed lie "i'm too perfectionist". what you leave out is that the glib bullshit artist who successfully makes it past that question and into the job is the same person who gets busted loading the copy machine into their pickup X months into the job, or embezzles $130,000 from the company. my point: is that i don't like the question any better than you do. really good answer from my friend who Got The Job as recent grad (graphic artist): "my lack of experience". from there, he went on to point out A things in his generic work history to show that he can pick up on things and get up to speed quickly and B this blank slate means he's not going to bring preconceived notions to the job, and thus will do things as trained. thanks for a good vid. you're giving me ideas to work with for three interviews this week.

I liked your video, but I am doubting about if to be shy and quiet is considered as a good answer! I would avoid this answer because in the modern life of the companies they prefer empoyees who are taking quick actions to the one who contemplate. If you say you have backbone, they say you dont compromise for team goal. If you say you can handle many tasks, they say you don't focus. I’m sometimes slow to take action at first, meaning that i’m a very detailed person and before i start a new task, i would like to have a clear strategy with how to move forward. I care about my work and doing it well is very important to me. I don't think that overly self-critical is good as your weakness because that means you have no self-confidence, and it affects your performance.
@edutechional6 жыл бұрын
That can be your opinion, but your conclusion is overstepping because it's not true for all cases. I'm personally quite self critical, but I'm also confident and constantly attempting to get better and being self critical has helped me to be motivated to always learn and improve. Being self critical is bad when it leads to procrastination and perfectionism, but it can be good when it motivates you.
@anitablanco73096 жыл бұрын
I love your explanation and this is what I need to hear! That's why I said in my first comment that saying overly self-critical is not good to say as a weakness because I read in another article (www.psychologytoday.com) that saying overly self-critical means you have no self-confidence and also there are many signs of negativeness. In fact, I am overly self-critical. Thank you so much!

This is terrible advice. It's not enough to say "I'm shy" and hope the hiring manager infers "Ooooh! Contemplative!" from that. You need to (a) not be a bullshitter, and this guy's clearly veering into at least the spirit of that territory, and (b) demonstrate self-awareness and make it clear that you understand your limitations but that you are also taking concrete steps to address these problems. So: no bullshiting (because it's completely obvious and people don't want to work with bullshitters) and make sure the shortcomings you mention aren't deal-breakers. Also, would it have killed Mr "Edutechional" to put on a fucking shirt? He looks like we just interrupted his table-top RPG.
