Is the me and the generalized other the same thing? Or are they different

Yes they are different ideas but related. Check out my new video on Mead’s I and Me and that will help you understand how they are different but related as we need the generalized other to understand the expectations which help form the “Me”. Ask questions anytime and thanks for watching!

@jessicaknows6881 haha sorry just noticed this was on a different video. So the generalized other is thinking about the expectations placed upon us. The “Me” is the subject of those expectations, and the “I” makes decisions based on those expectations. Does that help?

@@dr.maples Hi, thank you! Is this kind of what it is?: The me is defined as the generalized other, and so the me is the influence, thoughts (or peer pressure/expectations) that come from others that someone carries with them. This is the script and what others expect me to do. Then the "I" is novelty

@jessicaknows6881 that's moving in the right direction, yes. I like to think of the Me as being shaped by the expectations of the generalized other and therefore a reflection of what the generalized other and society in general would expect of you. Then the I is able to make a decision based on the situation in which the Me finds itself based on the expectations of the generalized other. Note here the I could decide on many options here, acting out of emotion or strategy or random guessing. It could consider those expectations placed on the Me by the generalized other or it could ignore them and go another way. Whatever the I here chooses to do creates a new Me which now faces new expectations from the generalized other and we begin the process again as, in Mead's perspective, we move toward a truer version of the self.
