Competition is a choice. Trying to compete with your mother in law only weakens your position. . As a wife, you are not your husband's mother and should not try to take her place. You are a person in your own right and see your in-laws as an opportunity for friendship, not a threat.

And vice-versa. Mother-in-law should not compete with daughter-in-law either. They should understand the difference between son and husband.

The master’s tools do not dismantle the master’s house! Tools of inequality don’t suddenly become tools of equality when wielded by others, they remain tools to divide, constrain, and disenfranchise. Women under patriarchy lose their autonomy as a matter of definition, then have to play the game of patriarchy to win it back like an actor has to suck up to the sleazy producer to get the good parts in a movie. It’s the producer’s movie, the actor only plays a role.

@@elongatedmanforever1252 if we look into history we'll see that basic survival of humans depended heavily on physical or manual labour. Men, with more muscle mass, energy and better hormonal balance automatically filled in those roles. Women on the other hand birthed children throughout her fertile years which kept her occupied and left her inside the house. Men's roles were held to greater importance because of threat from other societies trying to dominate each other. Physical strength was the currency of that age. Slowly we shifted towards an economy that leaned towards money as an exchange of goods and labour. Women with fewer children were able to give their time outside and earn few pennies. Slowly the need for physical labour decreased with the emergence of machines and industrial revolution. And thus the rise of feminism. Women who raised themselves against the gender norms were starting to get hate because they took away jobs from less qualified men and hence the misogyny. Women doing men's work meant their positions being snatched away and a need to contribute to household chores which obviously is not something they liked.

But life ISN'T a play?? We don't act out our existence on a stage and men are demonstrably incapable of scripting said performance in fairness to both (esp if this would require sacrifice on their part). Please note: I do not refer to all men. Feminism allows you to choose for yourself- you don't get to choose for anyone else though. Pointless competition (ie SAHM vs career-driven) is not a tenet of feminism but a deliberate campaign of misinformation used to distract us from questioning authority as it relates to accumulation of wealth and power. Women need each other to be safe, I pray for the day we are able to set privilege aside and apply our collective intelligence to greater things. This is obviously an oversimplification and I mean no criticism towards the makers of this video (information is a powerful weapon after all). I've been a student, housewife, sahm, part-time/full-time employee, married and expecting at 21 to a man 17yrs older and still married to him 22yrs later. I have an adult daughter and I want the world to be safe for her physically and emotionally. I want her to love and be loved- but not at the expense of her intelligence and ambitions. Life is hard enough without sabotage from your own kind. Sorry for the long rant... Edit: words and terrible punctuation.

'Behind every great man is a great woman' ? Top paid CEOs tend to have stay-at-home women who get to go shopping to spend the money. In strict Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia I read that women like to be able to stay at home with their women friends, not have to go to work, and feel protected by their men who go out to work instead. In Japan the most beautiful women tended to marry the top salaried men, and I would see them enjoying picnics in the park with babies - not having to go to work. A female friend told me it was great scam - enjoying going to cafes to relax with her women friends while her husband went to work - I told her she was talking to a man ... !

Great presentation! Patriarchy is all about sex, and women participate in it as ardently as men do. Men compete with each other because women crave to be adored by the victor. The powerful men put themselves in charge to gain access to women. Women follow the system and compete with each other to gain access to the most powerful men. Women are angry at men, not seeing their own power. Men are angry at women, not able to nurture and love themselves, not finding purpose beyond the conquest of women. It’s a crazy game where only 10% of the men win. Women are trying desperately to dismantle this system, but it’s exacerbating the issues men face, making those 10% of men even bigger winners and the rest of men bigger losers. Men are walking away from the system, but not to success but rather to complete hopelessness. I hope men and women, working together, can co-create something that creates more winners and more hope for the future.

We have all been born into cultural systems and beliefs which we unconsciously accept as right and true, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Included in those systems are history, religion, law, gender roles, and societal value. We can understand how patriarchy could have become the default culturally because in our earliest systems naked survival in itself was of prime concern. In such a system it was brute force that was critical, not only against the predations of nature, but, in an unenlightened, unascended stage of human development, against each other. So, it may be that since brute force was so critical in our beginnings and remained so for so long, it became ingrained in our concepts around "value" in the culture.

I have to disagree with your supposition that women’s “roles” are seen as devalued. I would ask, what makes a role a woman’s, or for that matter a man’s. This is where patriarchy is so ingrained, that the belief that a woman’s role in society is automatically the caregiver/child raiser, and the man is provider/protector…. Etc. who said? Because of technological advancement, are we still slaves to subconscious definitions of roles in society? Aren’t we in a time where either (all) genders are capable of fulfilling any role? Even biology is up for grabs. With IVF, and the other medical advances, even our ideas of childbirth and what is possible no longer fits.

It’s scary for many men to realize, women in my countries, if they choose, have the opportunity to live independently, with their own financial independence.
