Maybe. I could see people liking Exanima for its dark fantasy dungeon crawler vibe, with realistic weapons and armor and being drawn in from there, but the combat is both a blast of fresh air, and a slam to the gut to the typical ARPG expectations. Exanima is defiantly not easy to pickup, as the VERY nonstandard control scheme will definitely throw people off, as they attempt to wasd their way around and wonder why they get crushed. Course, they’re going to get crushed anyway, as it’s part of the learning process here. A Primer video like Splat’s, or perhaps even my own, would serve to dip peoples’ toes in, and give them some idea how it plays, but without actually playing it, you can’t really know. Definitely a game you have to develop a feel for, to really get the Feels for.

I can see how some people might like this game, but after 20+ hours I gave up. Enemies become so tanky later on so I found myself needing a two handed weapon or sword and shield to stay alive, but these areas have more pitch black areas than in the start, I couldn't see anything. It just got frustrating at that point and I wasn't having fun.
@MrDelightfulRPG3 жыл бұрын
@@krisreed5536 I just did a bit of experimenting, and you can drop your torch, and it will still provide light to fight by, creating a portable pool of light in which to fight your foes. Maybe keep it in your main slot, than drop it when battle begins and you swap over to your main set? That could work, though I’m no where as far as you. I’ve also heard talk of magical helms that provide light, so it seems the darkness is intended to be an element of the dungeon environment for the player to overcome. Ultima Underworld did something similar.

@PrisonBlock Canada I agree that in a game you can have a disconnect from how you'd act to how the game portrays that... but Exanima adds about two more layers of disconnect from the action with the physics engine dictating so much of the combat...

I like Exanima. Thanks for reminding me about it Splat! I made a video or few on it myself, as this new update gives fresh hope that the devs have not abandoned their baby, which is great sense it has been in Early Access since 2015! People just naturally start to worry when a game has been baking in the oven for over 6 years, but in this case, I think someday it might actually release! But beyond that, as you showed in your video, the combat really is unique, and is fully worth the purchase price. Beyond the excellent reminder video, it was the physics based combat that drew me to Exanima, & it is good. To briefly remind people about Exanima: The combat breaks down to timing & distance, & Exanima showcases that nicely, putting the focus on the footwork needed to close the distance for the strike, then dashing back to avoid the incoming hit. As each weapon & object has physics, the length of your chosen weapon really matters in Exanima, as if you have a longer weapon, you should try to keep distance so you can best use it. And if you have an axe or mace, you should aim to hit your foe with the weapon head, not the less beefy shaft. Gotta wack em with the meaty end! 👍

8:00 actually from personal experience the red circle is generally where you attacks will land in general. That's like the "apex" or end of your swing. So when I attack I usually wind up the swing and land the red circle where I want to hit the target and it usually lands where the circle is. Although it is definitely more noticeable with the stab. When I play I tend to use sword and shield and that's nice once you get the perk that allows you to attack and block at the same time. I am glad to hear there is a checkpoint system in the game. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for checking out this game again splat. It's very cool but can be very frustrating at times. My favorite game mode is the arena management one. The thing about Exanima is that it isn't your granny's DnD power fantasy. You ain't some hero. You're some shlub wandering around a bunch of tunnels getting into backalley brawls with the local wildlife and getting knocked over tables as a result, and then tripping on someone's corpse while trying to save your own life. The physics have improved a hell of a lot over time, but I always loved how much the environment could effect a fight and how desperate every encounter felt as a result. You can trip over a barstool and someone can come over and cave your skull in with a literal candlestick while you're on the floor. And you just have to deal with it. That more than anything will piss a lot of people off, even after they get used to the awkward controls.

I play the arena mode just for the combat mechanics every now and then, it's insanely addicting

I play Exanima. And I am borderline Competent! Just at the cusp at this point! I’m almost there, than boom, no more crashing into chairs, logs, and walls and getting brained by not quite brain dead zombies! Well, that will probably still happen, but it will happen less! 👍 Behold! As I reveal my not quite competent gameplay for the world to see! I have no shame! Stumbling through the dungeon, in style! 😎

I've seen clips of people who play this so much that they can angle their shields right to punch the enemy to the ground with it, or use polearms to trip/flip enemies. I wonder how much practice that took ...

That really does look cool! Beautiful feel to it I think.

In lategame you won't need to use torch. It is bright enough to decide that two handed weapon or shield a way more useful, when you face those who waits for you as soon as you leave the dungeon
