Not unimaginable if you give up the idea that the past was a gentler, simpler, more innocent time and see it as it really was. :) Would make a good movie.

Choteau Creek. From the Chouteau family of fur traders out from New Orleans whose name was mangled in spelling and pronunciation in many parts of the former Louisiana Territory. At Fort Pierre Chouteau there is a sign that has the name spelled differently and incorrectly on both sides. I've seen it as Choteau, Chateau, Coteau,.... :) Fort Pierre and Pierre, SD are named for it, both said as peer. I've run also across the name in Missouri, Nebraska, and Montana, and the family helped found St. Louis and Kansas City. Major players in the fur trade, they pop up all over as you follow their northwestern progress.

Really like the videos. Interesting finds and the added history is awesome too. Your channel name really caught my eye. Most channels that I've seen are back East. To see one from the Great plains is awesome. I'm in Kansas. Thanks for all the hard work you put in. Looking forward to more.

thanks.. yeah i guess we cornered the market on youtube channels about digging in the midwest.. and we barely decided to call the channel that. we were gonna call it "a sign of the times:" but there was a new top 40 song that just came out called that, so we didnt want our channel to be impossible to find when people use the search bar
@lukependleton25892 жыл бұрын
Well I'm glad that happened. Haha. That might not have caught my attention as much. Even though that might just be the case in my citation. Again thank you for sharing and please keep the videos coming. I know others have said it but even the not so amazing finds are still interesting and captivating. Also showing the other aspects and research that goes into digs would definitely be appreciated if you shared some info. Thank you.

What an amazing dig! You can definitely tell it was an earlier pit. Your Bitters bottles are splendid and so crudely made. Even the slicks are gorgeous. I love the food bottle with the lip that kind of looks like a screw top. How long ago did you dig this up? Do you find Indian artifacts? Take care and stay safe.✌
@mattsergel57042 жыл бұрын
Hi Debra I noticed you on the comment section on a lot of bottle digger channel's. I used to dig priveys, but not so much anymore. My knees went bad on me and have a hard time.

uhh we dug the station in june of 2021.. or at least around then. we actually dont find many native american artifacts, but one time we thought we had found a privy pit, so we began to dig it up, and about a foot down we started hitting bright orange/yellow/brown layers of clay. and i guess clay only turns that color under high prolonged heat.. and we had someone there from the historic society of bon homme county in south dakota.. he seemed to think it was the fire pit of a native american earth lodge.. we just re-buried it bc i think there might be laws against disturbing "pre-historic" archeological sites.. they estimated it to be between 600-1400 years old.. before europeans.. it was kinda sad, thinking about the people who had lived here long ago, and the changing times

Good videos good Diggs one suggestion is there anyway you can record at a higher volume because I have a hard time hearing what you were saying a lot of the time
@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
yes we can. we ordered a microphone, so in a few months when we have new videos, they will be alot louder, and with less wind.. we try to keep the volume low bc we were getting alot of wind in the microphone and it can be quite loud and annoying.. so yes, we will have better quality audio in the near future. thank you for sticking with us

What do you do with the items you find? What is the most valuable item that you have found so far and what is the worth? Is there any like "absolute best item" that you are seeking that you know holds a really high value?
@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
well we keep about 2% of what we find. to be completely honest most of what we find doesnt have a ton of value, so we can just sell it.. but we donate alot to the local historic societies of where ever we are at, but usually we find so much that they begin to refuse to take anything else.. the highest value bottles we have found are worth a couple grand, but they are kinda hard to sell for a good price.. and i wouldnt sell some of the good ones unless it was for an amazing price.. they just mean too much to me. and yes there is one bottle we are specifically looking for. its a cobalt blue blob soda.. dating from the 1870s.. there was a guy in yankton who made sodas back in the day, and 99% of them were aqua/blueish but like in the 1970s a man was walking by the river in yankton sd, and found a cobalt one.. he didnt know it was particularity valuable but he had just found the only cobalt one.. and i guess he found 2 more shortly after... well we have been looking for one for ourselves.. and i guess the $ value on it would be $15k on a good day.. and thats the most valuable bottle from the dakotas.. but there are bottles from like colorado and california that are worth hundreds of thousands
