Just in case anyone was wondering how to extract the product name instead of the state abbreviation or the 6-digit numeric product code at 24:01 : this is harder to do, because the number of characters depends on the name of the product (eg. Aspen has 5 characters, Carlota has 7 and so on). After playing around with the formula, I found that one way to do it is to use the LEN function, which returns the number of characters of a string, combined with the MID function, which extracts a specified number of characters starting from a specified n-th character. The full formula is MID(B96,7,LEN(B96)-10). The "-10" is the overall number of characters that make up the state abbreviation, plus comma and space, and the numeric product code.

Interestingly, when join two numbers using cell reference, eg 9 in A1 and 9 in A2, using A1&A2, the result looks like text, but you can still use it to plus 1 in another cell to get 100.
@excelisfun5 жыл бұрын
That is correct: 1) Using the Ampersand Join Symbol will convert the items to text, and 2) Using a math operator (like +1) will convert text numbers to numbers that can be use for math.

krn14242 is correct. over the last 10 years most of the great new features in Excel PC (Power Query, PowerPivot, New Functions, Relationships, Data Model and many others) are not in Mac Excel. Hi Mike you may have covered this but I was hoping you could help me with something. I have a very large report that I produce from my applicant tracking system and it outputs the information in columns A through G. Column A is first name, Column B is last name. I have a source who sends me lists of names in a different format but thanks to your videos I was able to take that data and convert the data into columns by the comma delimeter (he sent to me as last name, first name). Now that I have matching data sets, I need to see if the list of names match up with names I have in my very large report, so basically I have one list that is only 50 names long but another list that has 300. My main source has around 2000+ names. I essentially want to find the duplicates to see if the names he’s providing to me match with any of the names on my list- if they do, I need to input the information from my spreadsheet into his (essentially the status field which is column G) I guess I could use a vlookup for that but what’s the best way to identify where I have the matching data and then take the data in column g and input it into let’s say column C of his sheet.... I’m totally stumped. I thought of using conditional formatting and seeing where the colors line up but I don’t know if that’s the best way.... I hope I’m making sense.... if you could point me in the right direction and/or if you have a video that covers this I’d really appreciate it!! Thanks so much! You’re awesome!

If your main source has ~2,000 names and someone is sending you another list why are there three lists mentioned? Have you considered using Power Query (Get and Transform)? I would set up your master table as one query and the table sent to you as another. Then do a Merge query where the Join Kind is Left Outer. You can match up the common fields to retrieve the records in the list sent to you that have matching names in the master list. This will allow you to create a new table that contains the info you want to send back to the person who sent you the differently formatted list. I think this should work if I understand your situation correctly. If it does work you'll be able to easily automate the process in the future.

Hi, when I download and opened the file in the cover sheet instead of formulas it is showing "#NAME?". why it is like that? I am using excel 2007. Is anything do with the version? Please suggest the solution. Thank you

Yes, it is because you do not have Office 365. There are many, many useful and amazing new functions and features in the latest version that are not in Excel 2007.
