Leila, my goal is to have Gematria functions in Excel. Gematria is converting words to numbers. There are at least 36 different Ciphers. I figured that the Lambda function would be the way to go. But I have three problems. 1. Can the lambda function be used outside of a given workbook? 2. Can lambda functions be used to define additional lambda functions? I tried it and it didn't work. This is not good on complex functions. 3. Additionally, my mouse does not work on my laptop, so I use the keypad device. I have been unable to copy an equation in my worksheet and paste it into my Lambda definition line. I would have to carefully enter it again. 4. The definition screen for Lambda functions is tiny, it is difficult to work with big equations in that box, or being able to navigate within it. Suggestions?

In the 80's I had a Commodore 64 Plus 4 where the Plus 4 were 4 function keys that you could program to do whatever you wanted, they were called hot keys, and that's what this reminds me of in a way. Bringing the looping function over from VBA can be useful in a way. It's certainly faster than Find & Replace if making the text that perfect is that important. I've always named my array formulas doing V and H lookups so you can use those anywhere in the workbook too. I would imagine there are very specific instances where combining multiple lambdas to clean up the data would come in handy but right now this looks like more of the same from Microsoft, introduce a new function in the latest version so you have to get that version and in the end it really only helps save time in very specific instances. I mean, people had VBA code to fix data for years but now we need Lambda. You did a great job of explaining it and maybe I'll get more out of the second video. I'll definitely check out the feature in my work but right now I'm not sure I see too many advantages over what I already do. Thanks for the video and Happy Holidays to you and your family!

The lambda function is really interesting and I get a few inquiries about it. However, the biggest issue I find is the fact that at best it is workbook specific, meaning if you have to recreate it for next months’ data, you are starting from scratch again (copy/paste lambda). Public functions in vba posted in a xlam addin still have the upper hand 😊 #govba

Having inspired by this great teacher, I spent a couple hours in the internet and struggled with this "recursive lambda thing". Finally, I was able to make a custom function for dealing with text substitutions requiring looping. Cheers. A little peeve on terminology: in most programming languages "( )" are called "parentheses", "[ ]" "brackets", and "{ }" "(curly) braces". There are also "angle brackets", "< >". Does Excel documentation adopt different terminology? You seem to use "brackets" for "parentheses". Also, you sometimes seem to use "array" and "range" interchangeably. Since "array" has a specific meaning in Excel, I think it is best to avoid that confusion. Sorry for nitpicking.

Hi Leila, this is the best tutorial of LAMBDA I have seen. I cannot try it out as my laptop is not running on MSO 365. I already have several formulas that I want to try out on LAMBDA. Waiting for the wifey to come home to grab her laptop which has MSO 365, haha

Thank you for the nice explanation. [Google Translate] It worked wonderfully on almost all of my attempts. Almost!! Tried to convert a number to words, using example of "Convert NUMBERS to WORDS (NO VBA) in Excel", everything works in one cell. But the problem occurs to in Name Manager, cannot put the very large formulas that are required for this in Name Manager. Think the number of characters (formula) is too many. Name Manager (max 1024 ??). This may have to be adjusted in Excel in connection with LAMBDA.

One thing to note is that you can define lambda names locally using let function, and that's just creating local function inside a function that can be used multiple times. In the future, many Excel documents that has long formulae would probably be just a let with tons of parameters and the actual execution being actually clear to see what's going on.
