The fastest floor installation ever. That said, I am not crazy about the obvious diagonal pattern running cross the floor. Although it would be slower to lay, a random choice of board lengths would, I think, give a much better overall effect. Plus the finish on some of the skirting board ends was poor with uneven gaps.

You are completely correct. I am a union trained 37 year hardwood installer and finisher. That floor is installed incorrectly including the underlayment.
@bludika
@bludika 3 жыл бұрын
@@4evergav what was wrong with the underlayment btw? is it because it doesn't overlap enough and not taped down? what's the correct method by the book in terms of putting down underlayment? i usually buy the ones with the adhesive layer on top, so i just overlap it, dont really need to tape it

I’ve seen all sorts of construction practices in Thailand, on the two houses that I had built and on other people’s houses. The guy here went barefoot but the proper construction shoes in Thailand are flip flops. They tie bamboo together for ladders and scaffolding. They consume an amazing number of m-80 bottles per day to stay awake. They are great workers but if you ask them if they can do plumbing, electrical, or (in my case) landscape sprinkler systems, they will always say “can do,” even if they don’t have the slightest idea of how to do it. That results in having to fire them and bring in a specialist. I have my trees trimmed every year or two and I’m always amazed that they climb the trees barefoot with a machete. I do what I can from the ground with a cordless saws all.

Originally a wood floor was expensive so they used every inch of it, when I installed a floor I staggered the length so it was completely random , having the same space between the end of each board to me makes it look cheap, no matter how good the installer was
@squirts1
@squirts1 3 жыл бұрын
It's generally more efficient to do them randomly and as you said looks much better. This guy just started several rows ta the same time cutting each board about 6" different from the previous one. This creates even more waste rather than using previous end cutoff as the start for the following row. And yes, it looks terrible.

This guy speed is incredible and looks comfortable doing the job, obviously he does that for a living, I am not a profesional installer but have installed few floors myself, but there are few things that I've noticed that's contrary to what i was told; One is the amount of material waisted, the second is, the stair pattern on the floor is well defined, meaning the joints are not fully locked at the end, maybe that's the design intended, i dont know but i was told that the idea is to make it appear as a seameless surface, not an obvious pattern between the end joints. And the third is, the fact that there is no space in between wall and laminate, which as i understand it, is necessary for the laminate planks to expand and therefore, evading from possible future warping.

All the comments here so negative about making a regular pattern and imposing your concept of safety. His method is good, the product could be slightly nicer with more careful cuts, but I bet he saves 20% the time just with the fast cuts. Also, not wearing safety shoes allows him to feel imperfections with his feet that would otherwise be invisible when wearing rigid shoes.

Na I like the way I lay out my planks in a random pattern. All I saw with that floor was the diagonal seams all running the same direction. Zipper effect. I would have had you tear it all up. Honestly I’ve never seen a floor laid like that in the north eastern US. It’s a speedy way to get the job done faster that’s about it.

How so? My floors on the second floor of my home 90 year old oak laid in a random pattern and holding fine.
@haighyvshaighy
@haighyvshaighy 4 жыл бұрын
Let me be clear and make sure we both know what we’re talking about. An H pattern is a layout where all the board ends at the same points every other row creating an H appearance. I’m not talking about doing an H pattern in my layouts. I lay random board patterns with a variety. The eye sees a floor with no particular pattern, a continuity throughout the whole floor. With Your layout the eye is drawn to those diagonal seams. The brain tries to make sense of what it’s looking at and finds patterns in everything. As an installer you might not find issue with that but an interior designer would find that as a distraction. Random seams is the way to go. I don’t use laminate or vinyl flooring so maybe it’s different rules for those materials.

@@haighyvshaighy how do you lay your planks. Do you stagger?
@haighyvshaighy
@haighyvshaighy 4 жыл бұрын
@@stayreal5083 I lay staggered. Try to avoid any end joints from being less than 12” from another. The idea of a floor is to avoid an unintentional pattern and keep continuity.

No expansion gap at the wall and a staircase pattern that is super noticeable when the install is done. The young man is a hard worker and he works very fast. But he should read the instructions on the box 1st.

clo289, pick up a dovetail saw and cut the bottom edge of your door trim( using a small piece of flooring as a guide for the thickness to cut) then slide the flooring underneath. That way there is no caulking or any tiny cuts that could be off track. Much cleaner look. Search dovetail saw on KZbin . Hope that helped.

This is exactly how NOT to install a pre finished floor. Your eye will pick up a repeat pattern as soon as you walk in the room. Joints should be staggered and never closer than 6” to 8” from adjacent row. We call this a staircase pattern. Its the lazy way of doing things. We will make subs re do the job to our customers expectations. Our customers would not accept this job. On the other hand, if you don’t know what it should look like, then its all good. I still would hire him and re train him to our standards. He is fast. Love his steel toe boots. Palmetto Custom Floors.
