I ground up some malted barley and put it in my compost this winter and it heated so fast! It was amazing
@7munkee7 ай бұрын
I buy bulk barley for pennies a pound from our local Mennonite church. I malt it on my porch and use a Magic Bullet blender to grind it up. At this price I can afford to spread it all over my outside garden also. My plants respond so well to it, and you can literally see improvement the same day. They are a great source for everything I need from crushed oyster shells (they add it to chicken feeds) straw, barley, worm castings, raw milk/eggs, Alfalfa meal, and wild bird seed. I use the bird seed to grow mushrooms...it makes a great cheap spawning material.

I'm not a chemist. I just watched a podcast video on Future Cannabis Project with Dr. Robert Faust talking a lot about humic acid and it's effects on the soil. He mentions how humic acid can HELP when you have heavy metals in the soil by attracting them and binding them.
@freedom_born7 ай бұрын
Yeah, humic and fulvic are "theoretically supposed" to mitigate TDS and heavy metals... but, they're chelating agents nonetheless. Bonding dissolved solids is not necessarily a good thing.
@kisorganics7 ай бұрын
They can also bring in heavy metals too but I’ve heard that as well. I know biochar can work well to tie up many heavy metals as well.

Chitin is a long-chain polymer of N-acetylglucosamine, an amide derivative of glucose. Microbial action creates the enzyme “chitinase” and the Chitinase-Salicylic Pathway is one of the most powerful ‘immune system’ in the plant world. Red Wigglers (Eisenia fetida) only consume one single thing - bacteria manure (aka slime). Worms do not have teeth. They do not have a stomachd. They convert bacteria manure into worm castings through enzymatic action in their gut track. Worms are enzymes factories - they release specific enzymes in the bedding to trigger specific microbial response to deconstruct the OM (organic matter). Repeat: The “Chitinase-Ssalicylic Acid Pathway is what we call ‘auto-immune systems’ in humans and other animals. HTH Clackamas Coot

@jaydonaldson76527 ай бұрын
Is ten days working for you? I've did about ten days activating before mixing and didn't have problems at all, but there's an episode of this that featured Green Goblin I'm pretty sure it was, maybe it was the Happy Hydros dude, but anyway, they activate for like a month or two and said you still feel it "cooking" like heat off it? Mine wasn't hot, there was definitely warmth but I wouldn't say "hot".

Clackamas Coot here…I wanted to comment about “reusing soil” and that is I grow in #600 or #800 gallon SmartPots outdoors. The soils in these pots are over 6 years old. I started with CSPM (registered Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss), vermicompost, basalt rock dust (Cascade Minerals), 3/8” pumice from the eastern slopes of the Cascades, organic rice hulls, insect frass created from malted barley as the only source of food using Blues, Red Wigglers, European Nightcrawlers. During the off-season I use cover crops for all the reasons usually cited. Re-amending is limited to vermicompost, malted grains, neem & karanja meals and lots and lots of milk kefir whey (over 50 LAB and yeast colonies). Seriously, this isn’t rocket science. This question relates to an older video. however I thought it’s more likely to get answered on a newer video… the episode about companion plants and increasing terpene production. So things like lavender will help increase terpene production. Question, can growing different cannabis strains next to each other also induce different or more terpene production? since different strains would be producing different terpenes and levels etc.? I have tried to look up the answer for this myself and cannot really find any direct answers. It would make sense to me that if a plant like lavender increases production because of its own terpenes, then a different strain would have a similar effect. But I don’t know for sure and I’m curious. If this gets read and answered thank you in advance I greatly appreciate your time and your content.

@kisorganics7 ай бұрын
So there’s 3 types of silicon…amorphous, biogenic, and crystalline. Amorphous is the most available and crystalline tends to be the least available. Vermiculite would be crystalline so I wouldn’t could on it providing any real Si for a long time.

Anyone have any pro tips for lights off? Should there be a fan on or no, should you maintain a RH or not necessary? Is 10° lower night temp the sweet spot or is a certain temp to aim for? Should your things go into lights off with dry wet or damp roots, water at all, water just before lights on or no?

Fan. Always on. Humidity lower at lights off Temps lower at lights off. Water either when lights come on, or when they go off (energy for a hard day, or after a hard day).

30% perlite is borderline hydro.. You want to keep it easy to manage so 90% is to be 50/50 Peat moss and compost mix, 5% perlite, 2% Blood Fish and Bone meal, 2% dried chicken manure and 1% dry seaweed. That is gold.

Are you well known to the community of either cannabis growers, or just basic gardeners in general? Do you have any self content to refer to. Watch out for dissolved solids. The TDS build up will accumulate slightly faster than just amending some into your beginning soil. In soluble form, the uptake is almost instant. So whatever's not uptaken stays bound to the roots and soil. Whereas if you amend it in at the start, microbes have a better chance to break it down so it doesn't build up
