Great conversation. Just be careful when you ask breeders, "knowing that one pollinated female can produce possibly THOUSANDS of viable high quality seeds, why do you think your genetics are worth 20, 30, 40, even 50 dollars a seed when brands like Ethos or HSC average $10 a seed?" A lot of them don't like that question for some reason....😅
@PlaygroundMafia9 ай бұрын
It's annoying because your basically asking small operations to scale into a million dollar enterprise so consumers get a discount. One seed can make clones forever. By this logic each seed should be 100's of dollars depending on genetics/homozygosity. I've been breeding cannabis for 8 years, if someone pays me $30 for a 17 pack of seeds that I spent over 5 years breeding for id need to sell 250+ packs to make my money back from all the grows, which is 4250 seeds. Have you ever washed/ seperated and packaged 4000+ seeds? Without massive outreach and marketing I need to sell my packs for more to even come close to breaking even. Sorry for the rant. It comes up a lot at the trade shows I go to and it's annoying like you said lol

All the research I've been doing into plants and only now I ve come to realise if what I'm doing or intended is ethical .so this is the first thing that came up so my ethical research starts here. I did see an advanced skill related to plant breeding ethics maybe that's next. I wouldn't be responsible if I didn't look into the ethical side of things and I'm guessing maybe it's something that's often overlooked. Love the pod man watched listened digested loads of them it's hard to keep up with all the excellent content available on podcasts these days.yours is one of them especially in my earlier days of research taking in what I can you've got a great spectrum of MUKTIFACETED content .great man .safe. peace yahl

some of the best testing you can do to see if your plants will not herm or what not is to give tester seeds to newer growers cause they will stress your plants out
@codyharney29979 ай бұрын
I understand that it's true, but giving herms to new growers is kinda lame haha. If you have good genes to start and it's really more stress testing then yea I get it.
@johnkehoe83689 ай бұрын
@@codyharney2997 yep but if they send them to me and i know they want me to stress them i will do my best only stress i wont do to a plant is over watering i have been doing 20% drybacks lately on new seeds i have bought just to see if they can handle the stress lol but yes agree if they do not let us know we just think we got trash seeds most plants i see lately are getting very swollen calyx's but they are not pollinated some might think they are but really no seeds others i have seen just throw you a few seeds for no reason at all never had any plants get to maturity for the seeds themselves so i believe some cultivars will try to sustain there own lifecycle with out the help of pollin like the pollin sac was hid away inside the swollen calyx and created 1 seed if you see what i am saying

26:10 i think pollen chucking is something breeders use to boost themselves above "beginners". if they are just "chucking pollen" then theyre just bad breeders, there is good breeding and bad breeding, but pollen chucking can really be a quick way to find a unicorn to then start to stabilize and breed.

Pretty much all breeders, outside the ones with million dollar lab set ups and genetics tests, are just "pollen chucking".. Breeding is just as much an art of numbers and tastes as it is an exact science

Have you heard of the 12/1 light schedule for veg? I'm just reading about it and it seems very efficient. Mainly form keeping heat and power consumption down. People who support this schedule claim in can yield more also. Apparently it is beneficial to the microbes in the soil as well. Some people who grow chrysanthemums use this schedule i believe. I'll try to ask during a live for FTS if I can catch one. Just getting into growing and motivated to learn. Thanks for your content.

@@SnoPaKFaRmZ-iv1ko Exactly, 18/6 is more in line with what nature would do. I've got too much going on in this grow I'm starting tomorrow, but I do want to try a little different schedule when flipping to flower. When I'm ready to flip to flower I will start pulling back the hours of light, but increasing light intensity. increasing ppfd, so that I maintain the same DLI. By doing it this way, By the time I get to 12/12, my DLI is where it should be for flower production and not having to play catchup with the DLI because I just took out 6 hours of light !

What are the ethics behind doing an S1 of your favorite pheno and then selling those seeds? Say I phenohunt Apple Fritter until I find a unique keeper, self that pheno, and then sell those seeds?
@impulsivegardens56558 ай бұрын
As stated in the podcast we do sell S1 seeds of breeder cut genetics. Making the selection does make it more unique to you. Are the Apple Fritter S1 seeds? If so that will bring it to S2 which could cause some issues like genetic depression. Make sure you source your apples fritter seeds from a legit source. Sometimes seeds are marketed as something hype to get seed sales when they are not even the correct genetics. Always research and ask questions!

That permanent marker smell all smells you can find them in all genetic CUKTIVARS so it's a minefield when it comes to named vars. Then you see so much variation on the same named vars. Even clones of the same plant can become so indiv8dual from the genetic parent in expressing .
@mauricecalliss13039 ай бұрын
Thetes gona always be problems cos the plant isnt typically grown under such different conditions .wots stable and proven undr ypur conditions mite not be stable under your conditions .ethically speaking not everyone knowd how to apply ethics in breeding .not everyone can be a purist even if they wanted to. It's all a product of circumstance. I don't think we will see close to old school strains anymore.
@williamnoble869 ай бұрын
I believe it’s always ethical to sell any product as long as you are 100% honest. If you tell someone this is a F1 and it’s clear then yea you can sell them. What sucks is when people sell them without telling you what you’re really buying. It’s all about transparency.

I would LOVE to hear more about plants herming as a survival mechanism. I have this project of making my own seeds to save money on a guerilla warfare grow type of stuff lol but I only have a 2x2 and it downed on me, if I use colloidal silver, it will make fem seeds so after a year and the plants die, all efforts will be erased. I would like it if the plants took over and reproduced yearly on their own. Would starting from fem seeds + colloidal silver make it more unstable, therefor leading to more herms? I don't need harvest genetics for this project only lots of seeds that will ideally recolonize nature in their rightful place. Or perhaps starting with non fem seeds and chucking actual pollen I bought online be the only realistic solution? Wouldn't just throwing kief from previous harvests months after it was harvested a valid option at all rather than ordering pollen online?

Hhhh..I ordered from attitude seedbank and got barney's farm and denefem seeds in a shirt... brought back memories 😊😢

It takes me a year to decide if a plant is a keeper. Jackson talks about how important it is to know your genetics, really know the genetics you have and how they behave in different scenarios. James Loud says you need to be a great grower before you can even make selections. If you can't make your plants express fully then you don't know what traits you are even looking for. It would take two years easily to bring a seed line to market unless it's just a mash up. Colin at ETHOS has his technique down and it still takes 3-5 runs for him to bring a pretty stable line to market doing thousand plant runs. I guess I'm saying is starting a seed company 2 years into your growing career is sus. No offense, but shit takes time
@impulsivegardens56558 ай бұрын
I’m 100% transparent with my operation. I stated differences between 1 off crosses and worked lines. Thanks for Tuning in. These are the types of comments I would get before starting. Follow your passion and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I know I can bring value to the market but there’s many amazing breeders. Thanks for you input 👍
@BigFarm_ah3658 ай бұрын
@@impulsivegardens5655 Yeah man, it's time with the cultivars, you know? Jackson is big on that, when you really know a line that you are working with you start to pick up on linked traits. I really like getting genetics out of the Emerald Triangle. A lot of those cats just grew up surrounded by the scents and the stories. I grew the same cuts for a lot of years and then I decided to just grow as many things as I could get my hands on, all from seed for the last 6 or 7 years. I always grow a plant out 3 times too before making a decision. You can just take a cut of the seedling and toss it, because that is in no way representative of how it will grow as a clone. So few home growers are hanging on to anything these days. And it always bugs me out to see someone putting a ton of time and energy into growing a single plant by itself, months of veg and training and no idea if it's even worth growing. I'll tell ya, true keepers are few and far between unless you have the ability to look at large populations. The only way to support the habit is to sling cuts or beans. I'm looking to get myself into a spot where I can build a sun assist or something where I can run populations with low overhead
@michaelsimon11479 ай бұрын
Here's a question. Say your friend gives you some random beans, and they say it compares to "Michael Jordan" as far as quality, but there is no strain or any info about them whatsoever. How does someone get the beans or plants tested to see the lineage of its genetics?
@jm12green319 ай бұрын
You can't test the lineage but can identify the terpenes and THC CBD etc percentages. Really it comes down to narrow leaf or broadleaf or sativa or indica

There is one big question for me and many other cultivators witch noone seem to talk about in our community and that is "what about micro seeds"? I think i can show them in any bud i ever had, even in medical cannabis flowers.... I think that it can really mess up your experiance with your medication.... I think it is in their genpool and we can not remove that it is like the white inmature seeds in seedless watermelones, they are not dark and hard but they will allways be there....I think i never saw a completely seedless Watermelone....I would love to find the answer to that question after many years asking myself why there is no weed on the planet that has nothing of those micro seeds in there... Some people remove them witch takes like 30 Minitues for one joint because there are so many of it... I am talking about good weed from Amsterdam or from the Doctor....So clean stuff, no meesed up homegrown flower 😅 Since germany went legal i found myself really interrested in those little beans, would be cool to learn more about them and how to breed.... 😊 If you never saw microseeds => Check close to the stem, mostly you can find the biggest "microseeds" there...would be nice to share your experiance on this. Greetings from germany!
