In this episode of Garden Talk, I interview Tad Hussey. He has been gardening for 17 years and is the owner of KIS Organics. He has extensive knowledge when it comes to reusing soil - and that’s today’s topic. We also get into pH in living soil, organic fertilizers, heavy metals and microbial inoculants. What plants do you like to grow? Tomatoes, kale lettuce, peppers, house plants, citrus trees, let us know in the comments section below. If you enjoyed this video please click that thumbs up button :)

Finally an organic gardener on here who doesn’t downplay the significance of pH. In organics it’s less of an issue than when using synthetics because you have that buffering capacity but there’s absolutely an advantage to pHing, even in organic systems and it takes 15 seconds. Just do it.

I've had more issues by not PHing then I could even mention..I was always told its not an issue in organics. But all of my problems disappeared once I started checking and using a ph down or vinegar or lemon juice.

Chris, you're the man. You've taught me so much since I started growing, and introduced me to so many awesome growers from whom I've gotten endless information. Without your channel I'm not sure where I would be, I may have given up growing completely! Because of what you guys have taught me I successfully harvested my first ever grow and am currently on day 18 flower of my second (far more successful) run. Thank you so much, genuinely, for giving me the motivation to just TRY. I found a passion for growing I will surely continue pursuing for the rest of my life.

About 18 mins Tad talks about the size of pots and beds used for organic gardening . After 5 years of growing I moved to 15 Gal pots and cover crops and everything became so much simpler. Aquatic fish keeping works the same way in which it is easier to maintain balance with bigger tanks rather than smaller.

this is such an awesome topic!! i... was a synthetic grower. moving towards organic but ive grown synthetic and synganic. ive been using the same soil for 5 years nonstop always going in a continuous grow and i learned why farmers rotate their crops. my soil never got reamended and was just in continuous motion... well... the soil became just a medium without any nutrients in it. salt content was really high... the soil just couldnt take it anymore. great epi fam!! this is another banger with a whole bunch of info in it!!

I started out in buffered coco, which worked ok, then added bagged garden soil the next cycle and ever since, it’s a mix of coco, dirt, compost, worm castings and perlite. Even in a big 10 gallon pot, it easy to carry dry and easy to drag around in the tent fully watered and the results have been very good indeed. I use synthetic nutrients, mostly fox farm.

I love to use some Organic dry meal amendments in my soil mix. Not a lot. But I can use less of my main nute, And then I've had fantastic results with Blue Planet Nutrients Farmer's Pride Organic blend! Their Grow does have a tiny amount of Calcium Nitrate, while their Bloom blend has a tiny amount of MKP- Mono Potassium Phosphate. These ingredients are the lowest listed on each bottle. Almost every KZbin grower was using Blue Planet Nutrients, even paying full price, which isn't much, as they don't sponsor people or spend any money on advertising. Mr Grow It, rocked it for awhile with Blue Planet, I'm pretty sure. Eventually, Flora Flex and others started sponsoring growers channels to use their product. If you haven't tried Blue Planet Nutrients, especially their Farmers Pride blend, I guarantee you'll love it. Very clean product, that makes things almost too easy. Hopefully, someone will remember the name, and try it. If you haven't tried them before, it's definitely a really great product that works simply!👍💯✌️🙏

I was going to say, then he said it. TGA/ Subcool is what/who comes to mind when I see or hear the term Supersoil. It sounds like KIS and Build a Soil etc have taken off with the concept of preparing soil for seed to harvest weed grows. It's a really good time to start growing your own without a lot of confusion.

Another great episode. It's always interesting to see what the guests tend to focus on. People tend to talk about the thing that they are currently most interested in. Heavy metal buildup seems to be a common theme in this episode. I think it's very important for the layman to understand ways to reduce the risks of heavy metal toxicity, though it's beyond the scope of the typical gardener. Ultimately, there isn't a great deal that can be done about it outside of frequent soil testing. I tend to disagree on the dolomite lime aspect, as you shouldn't really be going crazy with this amendment, though I understand how it could be easily over-applied. This was a bit of a scary episode in realizing how little heavy metals are actually regulated.

lots of high end cannabis growers are gonna disagree with his 6.8 ph target range for livining soil, I think that's too high especially during flower when phosphorous prefers right at 6.0. Also feeding at 6.8 your gonna see low 7's or higher runoff in most cases.

Gypsum helps lawns that are in contact with road salts in winter. Put it down as soon as the snow melts for the last time, and it will help leech sodium. This will allow the plant to uptake what it wants as soon as it's out of dormancy. Don't use too much, and don't do it every year. Once again a soil test won't hurt.

I have been reusing my soil since I started growing indoors. My grows have been increasing in size, so I have been adding new soils to the old, but I am at a point that I have to add new soils because I am not quite getting the air to the roots that I would like, and green algae has been a problem this grow. My new grow is a good mix of old soil and new. I can see the difference already.
