Matt Mercer's superpower is his ability to make it look easy. He never gets flustered. He's incredibly gifted at making every choice retroactively feel inevitable, like fate. Brennan Lee Mulligan's superpower is his mad-scientist ability to straddle the line between chaos and ruin and sprint full speed ahead and somehow make it work. Two completely different superpowers, both awesome.

@@timofkings5173 my official thoughts (now that i'm not -buzzed and- angry) are that while i genuinely think Brennan Lee Mulligan is genuinely one of the best DM(/GM)s to ever do it - lightyears above the rest - Matt Mercer is someone i would murder my 3rd cousin to have as my DM(/GM). i also think that a big part of what makes Brennan seem so wildly incredibly and undeniably better than any other youtube DM(/GM) is that the players are usually performers and comedians (i will say this only accounts for so much as Brennan is easily one of the best story crafters of all time when it comes to a living narrative). I do love Misfits and Magic, and as much as the cast specifically brings that story to life, i absolutely have to acknowledge Aabria's quirks as a DM(/GM) which make the story her own. edit: punctuation.

I know there are so many absolutely buck-wild quotes from this episode, but I cannot shake just how succinctly "Its 1979 and Disco is never gonna die!" captures the vibe of this. A party unparalleled in their fields, thinking they have everything locked down, whist having NO possible idea of the coming Calamity that will wipe 2/3 of life off Exandria. Truly the definition of dramatic irony: "things said or done by characters that take on new meaning since we the audience know something the characters do not." Absolute Masterclass Brennan.

And Brennan has incredible retention. He funded his initial trp to LA by winning $50,000 on Who Wants to be a Millionaire as a young comic. He's a returning champion on Um, Actually. The guy majored in Philosophy and brings those themes to his games and he soaks up facts like a sponge. He & Aabria have running joke about his spouting bird facts in multiple streams they were in together. I can imagine him getting the Exandria Calamity lore and have LOTS of questions, and I have no doubt Matt loved it. I couldn't think of a better choice of DM for Mat to give this very special part of Exandrian Lore. Not only is Brennan a master class DM when it comes to character interaction and improv, he is also a fan of Critical Role who has watched the show. He's able to very comfortably bounce around established Exandrian lore (like knowing the ecological status of Marquet at this time in history) and in the next breath deftly fend off Sam's improv surprise with instant table favorite Bolo from Aeor. Also the opening sequence with Luis was a full slam dunk!
