I think 3:15 has a really good point about not having offline hobbies anymore. FOMO keeps people online which just leads to more of the same; it's also about priorities and boundaries.

I agree! I had a shopping problem and have really dug in to deal with it and realized I didn't have hobbies. I read, crochet, play piano, go for walks, and cook now that I don't shop for fun 😮

I noticed this when I was active on instagram. I constantly buy new clothes so I don't repeat an outfit. Luckily, I was able to quit, not just IG but other socmed too, where I felt pressured to post. It made me feel free and appreciate every moment more.

I’m big into anti-consumerism TikTok and I wish they highlighted men every once in a while. I know so many guys who have to get the new pro-sports team merch line/ jersey every season even though they stay so similar. So many hobby graveyards with thousands of dollars of equipment they used once.

I fully agree with the woman suggesting that people are over-consuming on this level due to the lack of a hobby. That alone would give people a better topic to watch videos about, as opposed to the countless videos aimed at convincing people to mindlessly buy things. But I would caution people not to use a new hobby as an excuse to overbuy things related to it, because starting a new hobby can be a pitfall for pointless aspirational spending.

The question should always be: does it make me happy or am I doing it because I should / have to ? King Haggard from the Last Unicorn was the first minimalist and he's a mood.
@MoonPhantom
@MoonPhantom 8 ай бұрын
I mean there's Ebenezer Scrooge too. That's a real minimalist right there. I think it's a question of balance my friend, you shouldn't deny yourself everything just in the name of saving money. But also don't buy stuff you don't actually need and you're going to be bored by in a month. There was a handmade dress I wanted, it was that one specific dress. Pretty expensive, but I never stopped thinking about it. So I saved up for it and got it, and then it's just that ONE gorgeous dress I truly love and not a THOUSAND cheaper dress's I would never really wear anyway. I feel like that is the key.
@zebracorne
@zebracorne 8 ай бұрын
@@MoonPhantom Scrooge is not a minimalist IMO because he cares about his money and not happiness. He sees money as an end rather than a tool towards an end. While Haggard is like "I will keep nothing near me that does not make me happy". A bit like the KonMari "does it spark joy" way of thinking. Tho keeping all the unicorns for himself WAS kinda greedy on Haggard's part, I have to admit.

Items cannot make you “happy”. In fact - chasing happiness generally is counterproductive. Contentment on the other hand comes from within and is what I at least have worked to obtain in my journey.

From a guys perspective. I have 2 spray scents. One inexpensive for day to day. And one expensive scent for weddings, funerals ect. You don't even need 3 perfumes. Seriously you dont really even need one. You don't stink if u shower. If you use deodorant... that is needed due to sweat glands. We have been taught that clean has a scent. Clean is just clean. It doesn't have a scent.

That's the problem with a society where parasocial relationships are so dominant. The people we "know" are rich and beautiful while they people we meet everyday are barely surviving. This "American Dream" has become more like where we self-gaslight ourselves for why we are not happy like the people we admire and follow and so, we spend away into a doom spiral trying to fill this imaginary self-manufactured void.

Agree wholeheartedly. One note, if what a person sees on tiktok is endless overconsumption, they are interacting with that content. If yous scroll past, you get other suggestions. So maybe they should stop engaging with it which only boosts that content's popularity overall and works against their goal.

As someone who works in a gaming shop I can confirm 96% of our customers have amazing quirky styles and look super cool there also sooooo interesting to talk to the only flex they have is there lounge fly backpacks or game library there so loving and down to earth! And as customers they never complain! The other side of the shop sells designer clothing and the customers all look the same and are so mean and angry 😠. The 30% of remaining customers are walkers and lovely people my guess is there hobbys away from social media are walks and cars lovely bunch!

I don’t think it’s as much as capitalisms fault as it is tiktoks fault. I’ve never even heard of this crisis before nor have I ever had this issue personally. I’m only 28, and have 40k in the bank, I make 70 grand a year, and this problem is beyond foreign to me. And I live in a capitalist county, it’s never done anything but benefit me and my wallet solely by making like, not even good decisions, but not like insane decisions? Lmao I buy nothing but food (300 a month) rent and bills (700 a month) and leisure and fun (100-400 a month). After all that I have 2 grand of savings every month.

Capitalism has the necessity for maintaining the perpetual growth of profit. Promoting consumerism, in wich you make people spend more on things they don't need, won't use or already have is a way of maintaining th ever growing profit. Let me give you an example; If you buy a ladder that is of great quality and durability what is your incentive to buy another? It is in the interest of the ladder manufacturer to make a less durable ladder so you can buy more ladders. That is what Apple does when they remove support for old smartphones. But corporations can do this also by making the new more of a fad than the old. Beeing it seen as a show of status or something else. It's like seeing someone in a shirt of an expensive brand and wanting to buy (remember the Supreme branded bricks? It's that). This consumerism is caracteristic of a capitalist society precisely because of the relation that capitalism has with profit.

People under capitalism are so busy working and living in survival mode that oftentimes the only way they can satiate that lack of fulfillment and emptiness jn our lives is through consumerism. Our society doesn't encourage people to connect, go out and look for internal validation or self fulfillment. Outside of a romantic relationship, the only way to fill that hole is to consumerist consumption.
