What are prerequisites to learn MS Exchange, O365 administration
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 3 жыл бұрын
I recommend a good understanding of Active Directory (ADDS). Exchange is very tightly integrated with AD - more so than any other application you're likely to encounter (AD was originally part of Exchange before being split out). It's somewhat less important for Office 365 if you aren't using directory sync but in my experience the majority of organisations do use directory sync, and having knowledge of what's happening behind the cloud curtain will be useful regardless.

@@ProTechShow one thing more to ask is: can a person having some IT application support experience enter into MS Exchange, O365 admin area? How will such person be considered.?
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 3 жыл бұрын
@@indude8791 Experience is always invaluable. If you can get some hands-on experience at your current job that will go a long way. If that's not an option then find a way to learn for yourself. Sitting some certifications is a good way to demonstrate you have some knowledge but can get expensive if self-funding. The other thing you can do is set up a lab at home, download evaluation copies of server applications, sign up for Office 365 trials, and use online resources to teach yourself whilst getting hands-on experience. Make sure to talk about that experience when applying - it may be contrived experience rather than on-the-job but it shows a lot of proactivity on your part.

@UGUAGLIOOOONE

Pro Tech Show well nowadays it is much more common than ever to switch back to onprem but anyway i think mail services are the less, probably because in the exchange installation process is very tricky(ex modify ad schema)

Great video! Congrats! Do you know if is possible to run microsoft forms (quick poll) on exchange on premises?
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Last I tried it worked a bit... but not properly. If I recall, the Outlook plugin didn't load properly, but you could add polls in OWA. If you added the polls via OWA the email contained a link to the poll rather than embedding it. I suspect it's one of those things that is intended for M365 accounts and kind of works on-prem more by accident than design. You need a Microsoft 365 account with access to Forms in any case.

I look after a domain with exchange on prem. I am very much against moving to O365. I feel that I won’t be in control and O365 always seems to have some issue or other not to mention that it would cost significantly more than on prem.

I came across a company that did that once... moved everything to the cloud and then got rid of their IT guy because they didn't need him anymore. It didn't end well for them. The poor secretary was trying to learn PowerShell whilst answering the phone because "it's the cloud so anyone can manage it". Long story short: the company went bust, but not before the secretary quit and used her new skills to get a job in IT that paid better.

Exchange Online is a very unreliable service. They are making changes left and right on the back end and causing issues. What a pain for IT support. The reliability is gone. Big mistake!

Do you decide how many ads to place in the video?
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 4 жыл бұрын
I don't believe I've got any control over that, no. I can customise the places they are allowed to appear (it's auto-generated by default), but as far as I know the number of ads (if any) actually displayed to each person is decided by KZbin.
@harrytrueman4216

@@ProTechShow thanks for the quick response. Never knew if was the content creator or youtube? Just had 2 short but annoying ads play 2 mins apart. Liking your vids, keep it up.
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! AFAIK KZbin decides how many to show based on its own algorithm that I assume tries to strike a balance between maximizing revenue and annoying viewers. Although I can't control which ad slots it will use on any given viewing, I can move the available slots around. I'll take a look and see if the ones in this video can be moved further apart without landing mid-sentence.
@harrytrueman4216
@harrytrueman4216 4 жыл бұрын
@@ProTechShow maybe you can move the slots right at the end? But anyway its not that big of a deal, I've almost become immune to these ads. Imagine using office 365 and there's ads dotted around!
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 4 жыл бұрын
Keep working on that immunity. KZbin have recently announced they're going to automatically enable mid-roll ads in videos over 8 mins later this month. Currently it's only in videos over 10 mins, so they're going to become more common across the platform I'm afraid!

With the recent hack, I was wondering what Ms Exchange was. This video did a nice job of explaining it, especially the difference with outlook 365. I know nothing in system administration and yet I was curious to know whether the assertions i have read saying Microsoft Exchange was highly vulnerable and poorly thought generally in terms of cyber security could be true. Now I understand clearly why it may be this way. Clearly, Microsoft Exchange is not the most pressing priority of the company but it makes sense. The recent cyber attacks question the viability of this strategy though
@ProTechShow
@ProTechShow 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The quick summary is that Exchange is the most widespread business email/messaging platform. To most people it's the server behind MS Outlook. I wouldn't say it's highly vulnerable in general; but it stores sensitive information, has a lot of privileges on the network, and is used by most businesses, so that makes it a very juicy target. A lot of effort goes into securing it for this reason, but it also makes vulnerabilities like this highly dangerous. From personal experience I can say this was much bigger than your average hack. Within a few hours we were detecting attacks against companies all over the place. The company I work for was quick off the mark and had teams in the UK and Aus working together to roll the fix out to customers ASAP, but many others didn't and they estimate hundreds of thousands of servers were breached globally. It does make a good case for Office 365. It's largely the same server they're running, but by the time Microsoft have announced it you can bet they've already patched Office 365. For anyone running the server themselves it remains vulnerable until they take action, and some people really drag their heels... I've come across many places that have gone years without patching!

@@ProTechShow wow thanks for this high quality additional insight 😊 Much appreciated. It seems that detractors of Microsoft and advocates of Linux are well organized because there are several of them in comment sections online , ranting loudly about how MS Exchange has always been terrible in terms of cyber security, and mocking companies which still rely on this option today. I was interested in knowing the portion of truth in these biased opinions. It is slightly off-topic but I am grateful to live in this era, where experts like you gracefully share their knowledge so that ultra beginners like me can benefit from it. And being able to reach out to these experts and get real answers, that quickly, is cherry on top.

People love to bash Microsoft, largely for the sake of bashing Microsoft. I don't know what the current stats are, but I did see at one point Exchange had ~80% of the on-premises and ~70% of cloud-based market share. If something that widely used was inherently insecure you'd hear about it a lot more! In most cases I've seen people making such comments they're comparing Exchange to something like Postfix or Sendmail, which is silly. Exchange is a bit of a monster and requires a lot more resources and management, but it also does a lot more than just sending emails. People have tried to build competitors using Linux but they end up having to string at least 10 different systems together and end up with a rather poor experience. I find the whole Linux Vs Microsoft thing a bit silly. For me it's about using the right tool for the job. For business messaging/collaboration needs, Exchange is hard to touch. If I just needed something to send and receive emails in the background Postfix would be a much better option. Using Exchange there would be like buying a car just to use its radio.
