It's basically half requited/returned love. You love someone who is incredibly damaged and unable to truly return that love. You'll do anything for them, while watching them make all the wrong decisions and maybe even self sabotage ( especially with addictive behaviors.) They may return your affections in their time of desperate need, but then they are back to their old ways. Perhaps they take you for granted and you deserve better, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Rest in Peace Kelly Preston! First seeing her in about 84 when I was 11 I thought What a Beautiful Girl! I was hooked. Felt like I lost her she passed. Been feeling really bad for John Travolta and recently Olivia Newton John passed away. God please be with him. They seemed like 2 amazing women and I can imagine the void he feels ❤️

Jay Spradley yes that’s what I don’t get either but he did say on Howard Stern one time that the song is about a friend of his relationship.

lol the music video itself doesn’t represent the song.

The music video follows the story of a man being in love with the step mom of his rich girlfriend. Her girlfriend's father wasn't very nice (prolly abusive) and their love kinda bloomed from a distance. She repelled him and he'd always come back for her. But when he finally comes to terms with her reluctance to be with him and began portraying real affection for his girlfriend, this woman gets jealous. That's when he decides to pursue her no matter what. That's what the song means to me eheheh 😅

I started learning this song a few days ago, playing guitar, not sure what triggered that except that I just plain like it and I was heading into a learning rut. I tried it on ukulele too but it's really not a uku song, maybe because I like playing it in a lower key and that bass line is important to the feel of the tune. I got in the habit of looking up information about the songs I learn to play, the stories behind them including how they were written. This story reminds me of how 'Paint It Black' by the Rolling Stones was written. Both start with a basic riff that just came to them and turned out to be the songs that really made the bands' careers.

Same. He said "out on your corner in the pouring rain" and he's "had her so many times" so ngl thought maybe the guy in the song was in love with a girl in the sex industry.

He is lying "wrote it and recorded in 1 hour"? Where's the CAP?
@Freakst0ne Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure he's lying through his teeth in this interview to save face or to make the song look sweeter than it is. If you listen to other songs like Payphone and This Love, they're in a similar, bitter vein, and there are other interviews where he's talked about him writing these songs as a result of a tumultuous relationship he was previously in. There's nothing cute or loving about "he was always there to help her, she always belonged to someone else" (friendzone complaint?) when coupled with "I've had you so many times but somehow I want more" (needy about his ex), "you know I get so insecure" and ""comes back and begs me to catch her" - it's all pretty bitter and stalkerish ("I don't mind spending every day out on your corner in the pouring rain"), especially when followed up with "This Love" where it turns out he has had enough because this love is taking its toll and he "won't say goodbye any more".
