@davy boy i think perhaps you've been badly misinformed on Jordan Peterson. I've watched dozens of hours of his content, read 12 rules for life, the whole 9. I don't know what you mean regarding waffling? On which topics has he waffled or contradicted himself on? Be specific. As far as his "promotion of right wing Christianity that also lead to death and war" Thats just a patently ridiculous thing to say on a few levels. First, his "promotion" is limited to acknowledging that Christianity is absolutely without question the primary foundation on which western values and civilization is built; and frankly anyone who genuinely argues that is isnt the case just isn't a serious person. Second, Christianity dramatically REDUCED the amount of war, death, and suffering across Europe. Pre Christian Europe was riven with tribalistic warfare and constant raiding, and became much more stable after the adoption of Christianity. (And the Romans weren't exactly pacifists if memory serves. They seemed to like enslaving people and slaughtering religious and ethnic minorities for mass entertainment.) Third, both the abolishment of slavery and womens suffrage came DIRECTLY from Christianity. Both movements arose within protestant Christianity, and came from deeply held religious convictions and theological arguments.

@davy boy As a historian myself, I remember learning about the importance of national identity. People wrongly assume it necessarily leads to destructive nationalism of the 1930s but this is to misunderstand it imo. It's very important for a nation to understand its collective history; its national story. And to have a culture & set of values which unite the people. Most other countries do so unashamedly but we are being intentionally & purposefully undermined in order to weaken national identity through the rewriting or destruction of our national story (history) and our uniting values. Our education system fails to promote "Britishness" and to help people understand & value the things which hold us together - our glue! The goal is to overturn the entire structure of our society using any lever to create a climate of fear & uncertainty. Brexit was a push back to some degree but there's a huge onslaught still going on. People need to realise that 21st century comfort & safety in Britain is not the natural condition of the human race & it's fragile.

He knows all that, but he hates being reminded of it, because it means his nostalgic idea of the Empire is nonsense, and that hurts his pride. So he lashes out in anger, using words that come readily to his tongue -- "damn Blacks" (we know the word that really came to his mind, and it isn't "Blacks"). And he apologizes, but his apology doesn't work this time, and he loses his cushy job and his "awards". The Queen must have been glad she hasn't knighted him! @@leezaslofsky4438 I get a little PO'd every time I hear "The slave trade" as though it was the whites who invented it... WE DIDN'T. BLACKS and Africans did. The English were if not the first, we were pretty close to first to abolish it throughout the Empire. Made it illegal in Britain in 1825, and through the Empire in 1833. The King of Matebeleland was still selling slaves to Arab slave traders as late as the 1880s (88/9?) And Muslim Arabs, (Africans) and Egyptians (Africans) were using slaves for 000s of years before White Europeans ever thought of it. The Muslims even made it part of their military strategy, and in the 16th century, took a whole Irish village, leaving the old women, and killing those who resisted. The U.S. had to make a deal in the 19th century in an attempt to stop Arabs (Muslims) attacking U.S. trading vessels. AFRICANS started it... Shame that doesn't make the history books, or the media.

Thank you for conferring such knowledge into society with people like Mill and Chesterton. "In short, the democratic faith is this: that the most terribly important things be left to ordinary people themselves - the mating of the sexes, the rearing of the young, the laws of the state. This is democracy; and in this I have always believed. But there is one thing that I never from my youth up been able to understand. I have never been able to understand where people got the idea that democracy is somehow opposed to tradition. It is obvious that tradition is only democracy extended through time. It is trusting to a consensus of common human voices rather than some isolated or arbitrary expert or record... Tradition may be defined as an extension of this democratic franchise: it refuses to submit to a small and often arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about. All democrats object to men being disqualified by the accident of birth; tradition, in a similar vein, simply objects to them being disqualified by accident of death. Democracy tells us not to neglect a good man's opinion, even if he is our offspring's groom. Tradition asks us not to neglect a good man's opinion, even if he is our father. So I, at any rate, cannot find myself separating these two concepts as others find themselves so apt. It seems evident to me that they are inextricably linked. The dead's democratic ideas persist in modern councils. The ancient Greeks voted by stones, then by tombstones. It is all quite equivocal and official by this token then: since most tombstones, like most ballot papers, are marked with a cross." GKC

@@ovoj It was portrayed as though when he said "damned blacks" he was using the "damned" as a pejorative term about all black people. However, in reality he was using the "damned" more to emphasise his point, and was it was not intended to be denegrating black people. Not the best choice of language, however. He was arguing that the slave trade was not the same as the holocaust, as the intention was not to eradicate black people. To evidence his argument, he referred to the number of "damned blacks in Africa". He says here that he actually intended to say "America" rather than "Africa" and that the "damned" was merely a slip of the tongue. It's worth pointing out that particularly in many northern dialects of English, it's common to use "damned" in a sentence to emphaise your point. For example, you might say "If the postman is off sick today, why did I receive so many damned letters this morning?" In my example, the "damned" isn't really calling for the genocide of the post, it's using the existence of the damned letters in order to point out the postman must have been working.

Dear Dr Starkey, I am a native of one of Britain's former colonies. As a toddler in the 1950s I snuggled up to my grandfather to tell me stories of the Boer War and his exile to Ceylon. It was the first time he'd ever seen the sea, let alone sail in a ship. Grandmother told how they lived off the veld for months, to avoid being taken to the concentration camps. So, on the one hand, there was palpable hatred of the Brits and their scorched-earth policy. And people not standing up in the cinema for God Save the King. On the other hand, my father was a "Smuts man" and went to war with the British in 1940. His brother, a pilot, was shot down and killed over Zagreb. So there was a lot of Anglophilia. I grew up reading Enid Blyton, Sherlock Holmes, Biggles, ballet books about Saddlers Wells etc. etc. Sherlock Holmes's London is my London. The English countryside is my countryside. Despite leaving the Commonwealth, I always felt that English culture is also my culture and my heritage. It is something I cherish and, in the 60s I was sad that all this was being destroyed and modernised before I could ever get to see it and live it. But my father assured me: English civilization survived the bubonic plague and the Blitz and they'll survive the Beatles too. I think, Dr Starkey, you are one of the immune cells of British society that will ensure its survival. I love hearing you talk.

I am relatively newly acquainted with David Starkey. He has not just an incisive take on historical events, but as a linguist and long term lover of the spoken word, I find he is second to none in his descriptions, phrasing and use of vocabulary. My immediate regret is that he has fallen victim (although I've just learned that the V word is outlawed by him) to a fresh set, not only of preposterous ideas and concepts, but, minutely, the vocabulary given to those who feel moved to use it! But the slogans, that have been used to attack the likes of David, consist of this new vocabulary. Are our debates and understandings to be boiled down to this? Did we not learn that the nastiest dictators and tyrants relied on slogans and hi-jacked vocabulary, something the masses could latch onto and taken into their hearts and minds? I love his use of language, and have listened to him for hours on many topics. i note his enrichment of those topics, elevating his subject matter - deriving from well argued points and scholarship, not slogans or made-up/misused vocabulary. I only wish there were more eloquent speakers like him: this is the standard we were educated to aspire to, and to appreciate!
