Ghost Cult was honored to interivew Maria and Chris from Heilung at the Moxy Hotel in New York City, as they wound up their amazing North American tour, where they performed their ritual nightly! We chatted about the rise of the band, their beginnings and how they came together, what kind of practice and preparation goes into creating their instruments and garb, the theatrical basis for Heilung live rituals, how they approach creating music, how Heilung is really their lifestyle, not a concert or shows as a normal band would, why Metal fans, in particular, are drawn to them, how to become a "warrior" when they come to your town, and much more! They even gave us a prop from their tour at the end of the chat, which was awesome (pictured in our thumbnail)! Thanks to Season of Mist for hooking it up! Interview with Keefy ( ghostcultkeefy), and editing by Omar Cordy of OJC Photography ( OJCPICS), with A/V help from Jason Dean ( bunnysyn_photography). Theme music by Salted Wounds ( saltedwoundsnyc).

Usually I am not commentating on KZbin, but this needs to be said: Thank you! Finally I see an Interview with someone asking questions, who is clearly feeling their music. There is nothing worse than reading reviews and interviews and the people asking the questions or writing them are just doing their job. I love how sometimes the interviewer is missing words or repeats himself. That just shows how he feels it.

Heilung taught me the importance of space between sounds and how real a higher vibe is... We are their psychedelic brothers in america...sort of... You either get it or you don't....we try to get a vibe across with just our instruments... Heilung is like no other band ...so deep and intertwined.... contemplative... Love it!

I am living with O.C.D. I live my life in rituals. Every morning, when I take all my vitamins, and my kratom, I HAVE to take all my meds while I listen to Heilung. They have become part of my morning ritual. I don't feel ready to start my day until I've listened to them. I have listened to them every morning for the last few years. (My neighbors just love me)

I was at two concerts of them. The first on a pagan festival in the Netherlands and it was the most beautiful concert ever seen/ experienced. It was in the evening and we were all outside, all listening to another pagan group on another stage. When it was time to go to there stage, we all run to see the ritual in the beginning, and it was so mesmerizing! The moon came behind the stage like it has meant to be. It was one big ritual, we were all in a mesmerizing state of mind and so happy. It was their first concert and I was there, and it was a very very beautiful pagan night. In the beginning of the evening we burnt the wickerman and we finished with the most beautiful ritual with Heilung.

15:55 I saw them live in NYC last week and oh boy. When they entered on stage I could feel their power. My whole body vibrated. They are the read deal. They are not performers of any kind. I knew right away it was a ritual and them getting into trance. I could feel the energy moving. It activated my own Primal being. It was pure ecstasy for me which I noticed majority of the crowd simply did not get. It went over their head. They came to watch a show. They missed the ritual part. And how in the bloody world can you listen to their music and NOT DANCE???? It was beyound me. People are so disconnected from the Primal source, so dead inside.. I know the music of course touched and moved them, but they were not fully connected. Not even close. Listening to the recorded music (even live performances) is still nothing compared to physically being in their powerful healing presence and feeling the immense vibrations of the drums and the bass. I felt at home. Nothing else has ever truly made me feel that way.

That would be absolutely fantastic not gonna lie. Hopefully once this pandemic is over and we start getting live music events on the regular again, we might see a collab between Heilung and Wardruna. The closest we've gotten to that collab so far is Vallåt by Kaunan, released a couple years ago, which Einar Selvik and Maria Franz both sang on. If you haven't checked it out already I'd really recommend you give it a listen, they both complement each other very well.

I remember 20 years ago with my generation, Gen X, we felt so cluttered and confused with technology that we yearned to return to the wild but didn't know how. Today, everyone brings their cell phones to concerts instead of living and being a part of the moment. And now with Heilung, once again people are becoming the moment by interacting physically, mentally and soulfully to the music. It's so good to see!
@moomah5929

I am what you call Gen X (I find these "generations" a stupid concept) and I love technology ever sind I got my hands on a Commodore 64. Still, I barely use my phone, which is collecting dust most of the time. There are times when I enjoy messing with tech like building a new PC and times when I prefer to relax like when using public transport (while nearly everyone else is playing on their phone). I would rather buy the Live DVD afterwards. The sad thing is, living in an apartment now, I can't even play loud music. Else I could have my own little "Concert". Headphones simply aren't the same, when you want to feel the sound.

I was at the Mtl ritual and I have to say that it was the most intense musical experience I have ever had. I absolutely agree with them saying that we are all there together living the moment, the drums pounding move all of us in the same frequency uniting us as one movement. I was right in front of the great Priestess Maria and I was absolutely in awe of her, her movement, her voice, her proximity (I have a huge crush on her! Is she and Chris still together !?). All Heilung were incredible, the 2 maidens on vocals and instruments, the Shaman, the viking drummer, Kai and his incantations, Chris with the voices from beyond and the unmiked chants of the warriors, this tribe is absolute must see event, I wish they come back during summer to live it again outside with the actual contact to earth, wind and stones, and beasts and trees. I absolutely love Heilung! I do have to say that this is the first time that I saw an "Asia" patch on a metalhead's jacket, though I can honestly say that my local FM station played an Asia tune during the lunch segment because "Nobody hears this much anymore." Serendipity.

This was a good interview, I was dying to hear about the "clothes" that are worn and so pleased Chris corrected any notion that they are remotely costumes, how brilliant. I would love to learn more about this attire as it looks so Shamanic to me, very reminiscent of what Siberian Shamans wear. It is so moving to hear them refer to ceremony and brothers and sisters, so powerful and i'm uplifted to realise it isn't just a show, but they really get it and know exactly what they are doing. This is all so timely and the movement towards plant medicines and endogenous healing traditions is spreading and something deeper is coming up to the surface and Heilung is embodying this impulse.

Primal is the perfect way to explain this, this art / virtual brings the primal nature of the human species out within us. I sure as heck felt that. When they mentioned trance like state when it comes to listening to that music I am almost certain they also feel the same thing when they're performing, I can see it with the way that they use the instruments they get into that rhythm it's such a specific way almost like they're not trying, but they really are just completely one with the music making it look effortless and thats when you know they are diving deep. I'm obsessed with music that gets me into trance/meditative like state.

It's interesting how the more 'technological' our species has become, there is also a curious hunger(?), I'm not sure what word to use, for a simpler, less technological lifestyle, and one in much closer connection with Nature. I'm not sure I would want to go back to Neolithic times, but the nostalgia for it, for a growing number, is strong. Maybe (this is just speculation) the realization that humans are now capable of disrupting the 'natural' course of Nature and the global environment itself, is a big motivator for why artistic expressions like this are so appealing? I don't know. But their work is undoubtedly energizing.

Thank you so much for such a great interview. I love Heilung´s music and I can say that I agree and I feel all they say and I resonate with it. To me there are several types of music and artist. Some touches just my ear, some touches my heart and some touches my soul. Only few musicians could merge and penetrate into all my being and even further and deeply into my soul. Heilung is one of the few and thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating such mesmerizing and beautiful music and all the ritual concept ♥

Weird as it may sound, this is kind of like certain types of electronic music gathering. But you're not restricted to be just as a spectator you are a part of it. Im all too familiar with this type of stuff and I really really really like this. I recently discovered heilung and I am very happy to know that this is something that I'm very familiar with. I will definitely be going to the ritual in Los Angeles this year I'm going to try to get ground level so I have that open space. I literally felt like I was there when I was watching the recorded stream I felt completely connected to the entire ritual.

When I first seen videos of these guys live I was at first confused, I didn't know what to make of it but I was instantly drawn to their music. I don't understand a single word spoken in any of their songs but I would love to see them live in Michigan one day. They really need to do a tour visiting more than just a couple of states. I know they may not be that big or have a huge fallowing over here, but their concerts look amazing.
