I’m lifelong Minnesotan and retired. My college internship was with the Shakopee women’s correctional facility. It began with care and good aims to help the women recognize that they could replace certain illegal habits with good new ideals. This is such a betrayal of the inmates. I, too, would be set back about even doing an internship there these days when so little consideration is given to the fair amount of security that the incarcerated women deserve!

There are some women who have committed violent, hateful crimes but the majority do not and are usually there due to trauma which leads to men and drugs and then girls and women being manipulated into criminal behavior often unwittingly. I'm not surprised. I lived in MN for many years and much of my family still lives there. I've know 2 women who went to the Shakopee prison (I'm a pastor who sometimes does jail ministry.) I have a couple in my church here in NE that moved out of MN just because they didn't want to pay taxes to that government any more. Many of my relatives would move out if they could. Like many places in America the state is divided between the large cities which in MN have been run by full on leftists for decades, and rural areas that are heavily conservative.
