My dad had a chance to coach an American youth club team that visited and played some academies in 81. The most he talked about was meeting and talking with Glenn during a visit to Spurs facility. Glenn and all players signed a ball for him to bring home but it was their friendliness that stood out to him.

Always love listening to Hoddle talk about football. He talks with nuance and beyond the surface level much like the Dutch. Very thought provoking. Also Gordon Stratcan talked a lot about practising with a ball against a wall being the most efficient method due to training & matches only allowing a certain amount of time with the ball.

Glenn Hoddle play style from the clips i've seen is reminiscent of Santi Cazorla for me, a bigger version, just so graceful, two footed, beautiful to watch. So glad you have him on cos you hear him on the commentary and you see the pictures he sees others don't. I/m a big fan
@RaymondoRed3 жыл бұрын
Bobby Charlton trained in a similar way to Glenn. Hitting balls against a wall, with his weaker left foot, over and over and over again until hi left foot was the equal, if not better than this right. Just shows where dedication can get you!
@Kurgan6183 жыл бұрын
Exactly who I thought of. And he is probably the best midfielder we've ever had.
@RaymondoRed3 жыл бұрын
I’ve always thought that professional footballers shouldn’t have a noticeable weaker foot, considering that they kick a football about for hours and hours every day! I don’t think they devote enough time to improving their weaker foot.
@Kurgan6183 жыл бұрын
@@RaymondoRed and I think I read even Best did the same. I love that Hoddle identified Owen could've worked more on his weaker foot. Owen had the same obstinance as Hoddle so never going to happen, and that was always the main accusation against Hoddle as a manager (aside from stupid beliefs)... that he upset the star players.

Glenn Hoddle, a natural talent with the vision, touch and composure of Berbatov, the inventiveness and technical ability of Platini and the football brain of Socrates de Oliveira. And he'd be often left out of the national team because of the stereotypical rough-and-tumble, kick and rush 'hard men' mentality of the 80s. On the rare occasions Bobby Robson played him alongside Robbo in the centre England had a midfield to be envious of and it showed on the pitch. Damn right he went to Monaco and shone. English football had their own Pirlo and they wasted him.

Hoddle's insights are pretty unique on the landscape now in a way, but are usually relatable back to simple logical ideas which reinforces what he says for me, really enjoyed his takes which touched on the psychological side of the game, the mentality of players etc. and pleasantly surprised at how he speaks about the game from a technical point of view. As a teenager we used to call on each others doors to have kickabouts and also arrange games at our local park, as well as play other teams, in other areas, we used to play from afternoon until it got too dark to play, none of us ever made it professionally, just not at that level, although I did get some games for my school as a Goalie, but just used to love playing for fun and pure joy of the sport, kept us out of trouble, and fit as well, I sure do miss those days!! I did wonder at the time what would have happened if got a bit more time as he was a good coach, and we played well under him, and if only Simeone didn't play his dirty tricks against Beckham, how much further England would have got in that tournament

In Glenn's last season at Spurs he played as a number 10 behind Clive Allen for most of the season. I think the conundrum was you wanted him high enough up the pitch to be free of important defensive duties, but you also wanted enough players ahead of him for him to hit with his glorious passes - fast forwards or midfield runners or both. You wanted him facing the play to pass and shoot rather than with his back to goal too much. He remains my favourite player. He was simply majestic. Thanks for getting the gaffer on, Rio!
