I think Cenk’s shift can be traced back to Ana Kasparian’s growing disillusionment over the years. Around 4+ years ago, Ana seemed to lose faith in the progressive movement after repeated setbacks. Her frustration turned into nihilism, leading her to be increasingly critical of leftist strategies and more open to right-wing views on issues like homelessness and immigration. While evolving opinions can be a good thing, her nihilism only deepened, and she began downplaying the dangers of figures like Donald Trump, even claiming he’s not a fascist-a position that’s demonstrably false. As this unfolded on TYT, tensions grew between her and Cenk. Because Cenk values Ana’s perspective and trusts her, he started adopting some of her flawed arguments and became more sympathetic to certain right-wing narratives. Over time, his loyalty to Ana seems to have influenced his own shift to the right. This trajectory ultimately stems from Ana’s disillusionment and Cenk’s willingness to follow her lead.

Fan funded is not independent. Fan funded means you have to make content your fans approve of. How is that independent? Kyle makes shows based on what brings in the most revenue. Kyle has been the most consistent and genuine online news host over the last decade. He says what he thinks even if the majority of his audience will disagree. For example when russiagate happened he pushed back against it and told his audience there was no merit to the claims Trump was a russian asset even though many (me included) thought there was. He was ultimately proved right as the Muller report confirmed.

I have an issue with these social media sites describing their algorithms as a "black box", implying that you can't look inside but only see the inputs and output. Compared with an airplane's black box, that description is completely antithetical to the intent. An airplane black box takes in every sensor and monitored stat from the plane and saves it moment by moment, so that when a plane crashes, the black box can be recovered and analyzed to show exactly what happened to the plane. Always remember: Cenk went to Wharton, he’s always been an enthusiastic capitalist and he’s always been open about that. There's more than just how media is funded, but also social media 'selective' editing. I am a progressive liberal and I am always looking at liberal pages on Facebook. Every so often, I have posted articles or my opinions on these pages. However, over the past few weeks, I have noticed that my posts (on political pages, anyway) have not appeared. I have the ability to check my activity log to see what has been posted. Posts I make on sports or funny videos or music videos or just social videos overall have been seen, but my political posts have been blocked, or maybe deleted. This is a very concerning thing for me, and should be for us all. Has anyone else posted on Facebook and have the post blocked or deleted? The only reason I'm not subbed to Secular Talk is he can pump out a good 7-10 videos a day, depending on the news that day, and it's just a bit much when I'm scrolling my subscriptions. I sort of wish he had a channel that packed them all into one video, because subscribing to it would a no brainer for me. But for now, I have to survive on the occasional afterplay.

I've been watching tons of 'independent media' content of late, from across the American political spectrum, to both understand what is happening in your country and decide how it will impact mine. I can' t help noticing that almost everyone is trying to sell me things. Some push the sponsor ads to the front or back of their content while other drop it into the midst of topics. Some try to legitimize it by having a little conversation about how fantastic product x or y is. I'm starting to judge creators based on thier ad placements. People need money, I get that, and I take into account the visible circumstances of individual creators or the number of creators support by a specific 'network', but some of these folks are hitting my limit. The grift is strong. I subscribe, give thumbs up, and comment to try and boost content I think deserves views but I'm not buying shit to support podcasts and videos. Creators relying on Patreon, and other small dollar donations, are the only ones I fell real confidence in.

As admirable as I think the principle of not taking advertising money is, people will, should and have to look out for themselves and their livelihood. There is line, and money corrupts, but i dont think its fair to view people who take money for ads or sponsorships as beyond the fray.

I think the majority report handles advertisers well because if they have an Advertiser that engages in behavior that the majority report is against on principle, then they will drop that Advertiser and let the audience know why they dropped that advertiser. I remember they did it with some company (Brooklinen, I think) because of BDS and somewhere in the supply chain this company had a factory in occupied Palestinian territory.

I don't like Kyle's holier than thou stance when it comes to advertisers. He can fairly criticize channels like TYT for being fake independent media for the huge 7-8 figure checks they receive from billionaire investors and blatant scam companies like Polymarket, and any company advertising on political channels is open to scrutiny. But pretending that any channel that takes on advertisers is compromised and fake as a matter of principle is absurd. It depends entirely on who the advertisers are. The problem is that the vast majority of KZbinrs are extremely lazy about sponsors, never want to do any work seeking out advertisers of their own who would be appropriate for their specific audience, and they just rely on the same old rotating who's who of shady sponsors like Betterhelp and VPNs that are already paying every other channel out there to approach them to hawk their stuff. If Kyle truly has been sponsor-free for his entire KZbin run, then he lives like a monk with a tiny cost of living and no staff to help run his channel, has a loyal paid subscription and/or Patreon base, or was already a trust fund baby or independently wealthy.
